Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

There are a lot of stupid people.

I have no dog in this fight but at this point in time it is amusing how wrong some were about them not being able to sustain their income over the years.

Unlimited scope, unlimited budget, unlimited timeframe…

Really? “Some of them”? That would be pretty much everyone since I don’t know of a single person who predicted they would raise what they have raised over the years.

I didn’t make a specific prediction but I did say at various points in time that people underestimate the financial potential of a project like this and especially what whales are throwing at games.
People can joke about paying for ship jpegs all they want but a look at a game like EA’s FIFA and how they are able to monetize it. Though to be fair when Star Citizen started this kind of stuff was mostly limited to the mobile area and thus I kind of understand why noone here would expect it.
I guess as long as Roberts and friends can keep the “dream” alive the money will keep on coming and it really is an interesting experiment outside of all the drama, I’m curious how this whole thing will look in 3-4 years.

Fifa is a game you can actually play though.

Will they see $200m by the end of 4Q 18?

Yes. The question is whether they’ll reach 210M (unlikely)

They have not done their anniversary sales. Those can easily do 6-8M, and there’s plenty of October left too.

Every year (at least for the last 3 years, will have to check my posting history), around this time, I point out how, regardless of how the project development looks, any slowdown in funding over years seems negligible.

Aren’t there some playable builds of SC? I read on reddit the other day that 3.3 doubled the framerate and runs at 60fps on GTX970 now.

They have a playable build of… something. Not “Star Citizen” per the mind’s eye of the fans.

Also, when you buy a card in FIFA, you can actually play with that player in the game right now.

True, but the monetization, as I understand it, of FIFA and (to take another example) Fortnite is largely around cosmetics.

SC just takes it a step further and removes the gameplay element entirely! Turns out you don’t need a playable game to monetize the cosmetics!

For FIFA, not remotely. It’s absolutely tied to gameplay in FUT.

Wow! Is it full on PtW more money means a better squad?

Yep, entirely. You get players through what are essentially baseball card style packs. You can earn packs at a reasonable pace by just playing such that I never felt I needed to buy packs to have fun playing the AI and slowly building a fun team that I liked. But if you want to play competitively online or really want Messi then you absolutely have to pay if you want a strong team. (Or play a different game mode)

The odds of getting the real elite players is very very low, and then they also release upgraded super players during limited windows (Players of the Week, Players of the Year, etc) so if you want those players people are pushed to buy a bunch of packs in those windows.

Oh brave new world, that has such microtransactions in it. cries

And I know FUT is massively profitable. It’s just so depressing how that will influence game development.

That’s equivalent to the GDP of Greece, which is absurd.

The EU is not that genocidal, you’re missing 3 orders of magnitude.

The Judge said that she didn’t need oral arguments to rule on the last part of the MotD but hasn’t ruled on it yet. This apparently is fairly typical and doesn’t tip which way she will rule.

Most of the lawsuit will go forward regardless and unless there is a settlement discovery will occur. Crytek has put in their requests for discovery and CiG has cried about how they think it is all unfair. The Judge hasn’t ruled on what exactly will be included here.

So long story short is the lawsuit moves forward at typical lawsuit pace.

My latest article covering CitizenCon 2018, the next chapter in the hilarity, as well as the lawsuit, is live.
