Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

This Newsweek article about Star Citizen just went live. I promise you, it reads like one, but it’s not parody.

We may not have 100 star systems yet, but just wandering around this one star system is more content than almost every game that has detail to this level,

Back in 2014 after raising $65M, he promised 106. They haven’t built a SINGLE one yet.

You’re not wrong that it reads like parody.

“I thought the way that Notch did Minecraft was smart,” Chris recalled, “so I thought ‘what if I can build an alpha and charge people for early access before early access was a thing…’

“before early access was a thing”. I mean, seriously, he said that. Because, you know, there was no early access before that - and he didn’t ever promise an early access game.

Funny how in Oct/Nov 2012 he promised to deliver 2 FINISHED games within 2 yrs, in Nov 2014.

Despite all the money the project has raised, it still has its fair share of detractors. In that six-year time span, Star Citizen remains in alpha and a full release might still be a few years away.

With that quality comes extra cost and time, but the minds behind Star Citizen are mostly happy to oblige. “I genuinely said to my wife a few nights ago that I wish we didn’t have to sleep,” said Davis. “The need, want and drive is there because what we’re making is there, and the team we’ve surrounded ourselves with is there. It makes you not want to stop. I have a harder time telling my very passionate employees to go home and get some sleep than I do telling them to come in to work and do this job.”

lolol

Where is all of the money that they are pulling in going?

Mostly mo-cap reshoots.

If there’s one thing kickstarter debacles have taught me, it’s how under-appreciated publishers are.

Also, how horrible mainstream media is in covering video games. Still.

Well said. Publishers can be cast as an evil force that is pushing to release a game that is incomplete and behind schedule. Good thing Chris doesn’t have that to worry about.

Never fails to astound me. Every time the New Yorker writes up some breathless take on No Man’s Sky or something, I want to pound my head into a concrete wall.

I don’t think I’ve ever read as optimistic a Star Citizen piece as that one from Newsweek.

“Newsweek: The Official Supporter of the 2024 Star Citizen.” (v. 3.4.1)

Anyway, the backer comments below the article are predictable.
One detractor so far, but they’re being pretty nice to him.

We’re basically ignoring them now, you see. :)

Well, it’s not like you can write a note to Tom Cruise and change his mind.

When they’re not taking screen shots, they’re making movies. I mean, it’s not as if they have a game to play. But this Top Gun movie rendition done with Star Citizen footage, is really good. Watch.

At 0:53, that pilot looks a bit like you, Derek.

He does!

Yeah, he totally does :)

Last night there was a new filing in the CryTek v CIG case.

The judge granted a CIG motion to dismiss with leave to amend by CryTek.

The Court GRANTS with leave to amend Defendants’ Motion to Dismiss42 . Within 21 days from the date of this Order, Plaintiff shall file a Third Amended Complaint addressing the deficiencies discussed in this Order or notify Defendants and the Court that it does not intend to amend. Thereafter, Defendants shall file their response within 21 days.”

Pouring over it now.

For a list of the docs referenced in the filing, go here.

It seems like the Court is basically requesting more details/specifics before deciding but it’s so far out of my realm that I could be totally wrong. At the very least it seems like we have a few more months before these last parts of the MtD are ruled on.
