Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

If they have spent 200 million and got diddly squat to show for it what makes anyone think another 40 odd million makes a difference. Bit like peeing in to the wind isn’t it.

You shut your mouth.

I don’t think Brian Blessed can shut his mouth.

If they stop using all the money for development of a game that has no perspective of not being a buggy tech demo while still absorbing lots of whale money. It’s a humongous “if”.

As I wrote in my updated article, the deal makes zero sense. That’s why standard and institutional investors and publishers have been blowing him off since 2017 as sources claimed back in Sept 2017.

But if you are familiar with investments, then you should already know about these two things which are certain to be how/why they did this deal.

Nor will we ever wish him to.

That this extra money is going to marketing is hilarious. Marketing is really the thing they’re best at.

I’m not sure how you come to this conclusion. Their released financials in fact show that their game is not generating huge profits: even with their crazy monetization scheme, they are running at a loss and require outside investment. Further, “generating huge profits” implies a released game that a large audience would play and enjoy, which the current game certainly is not. Instead, what Star Citizen has demonstrated is a requirement of the promise of continuous development, since whenever the game is finally called “finished,” the illusion of infinite gameplay will finally come crashing down and funding will surely cease. No game could possibly deliver the expectations of the group of people who are apparently financing this thing, so unlike a traditional game model in which you invest money into a game, release a product, and make your investment back plus a profit, Star Citizen’s model is to postulate a fantasy that is always in the future, with continuous development towards this unachievable ideal. This locks you into constant burn, which seems to be inimical to “huge profits.”

I think at this point, their best bet is to make Squadron 42 into an amazing single-player game that hopefully sells millions of units, get ported to consoles and sells more, etc. But the current game shows zero indication of that happening. We’ll see.

Oh, you really think it’s for marketing, huh? It’s a blatant lie.

They had to have started on this deal long before they closed it in May 2018 – at a time when they knew (as we do now) that the project wasn’t due for another two and half years ! Who raises money by selling 10% of their company for $46M; to market a product that’s years away? Especially when they are burning through money like they have been doing? How does that make any sense? It’s a lie. They spin it this way because the optics of Chris saying that he needed investor money to continue funding the project, after claiming to have raised $211M over six years, just looks bad.

LOL!

ps: I’m sure all the people who put money into Theranos and others, felt this way too.

I don’t, but the fact that that’s what they’re saying it’s for is hilarious.

In today’s UK filing, we find out that back in Nov, they changed the name of the parent company from Cloud Imperium Games, to Cloud Imperium. They’re only just now filing that too.

It’s like you’ve never read anything in this thread. There’s no way this thing even becomes a “product” much less generate “huge” profits. You’re living in a dreamworld.

In the interview with Dean over at VentureBeat, Chris Roberts mentions yacht a total of 5 times.

Meanwhile, over at the delusion den, backers are having a collective meltdown over recent events. It’s almost as if they haven’t been paying attention. At all.

Oh boy. Chris is going to try making another movie, isn’t he?

Ah! See, a fan would point to the launcher and the fact that you can indeed “play” the entries offered. There are technically ships and missions and NPCs, etc. Money well spent!

I’ve worked on some very big projects, including massive releases like The Force Unleashed, and we never had a budget anywhere near $46 million for marketing. You can do a huge TV buy with $20 million, so I’m not sure why they’d need this much money for a PC-only space sim.

July 2016, CIG guys claiming they have played every SQ42 mission

At this point we’ve all played every SQ42 mission.

I can’t write and laugh at that silly picture at the same time @Calelari.

That wouldn’t be in line with the dream or vision that they are selling to their backers. But I do think is and has been their way out of the hole for a while.
