The statements in the article implied criminal behavior. I think they wanted to stay on top of it with the community and partners. In the reddit threads there are indications that the journo in question has stated on twitter that the ID card she was shown could in fact be a generic door proximity card, that almost any one uses in a lightly secured facility, not a real id card. SC-for crowd is very excited about this revelation.
The way you cast this, though, there isn’t a winning or effective move for Chris Roberts at all. A short statement might satisfy you but would be received as a silent concession; their strong statement is construed as paranoia. “Hunkering down” is another way to say “ceding the battlefield”. Given the way this project is funded, there is no way RSI can afford to do that. To a certain degree, if they don’t respond strongly enough, the popcorn will turn into pitchforks.

Wow that subreddit gets crazy quickly. It seems almost cult-like at this point.

Did the journalist who did an interview actually accept a ProxCard as proof that either for CIG? That seems nonsensical.

See, I didn’t see that as a strong statement. A LONG statement, but when you start doing things like accusing them of being a willing part of some conspiracy it loses its impact to me, and becomes a “let’s throw everything we can think of at them.”
A short statement saying we deny everything, your statements on illegal HR practices are libel, and we will take you to court to settle the defamation and harm that your article has inflicted on my client’s company and reputation - that’s not rambling and filled with paranoia. I’ve seen several of these over the years, and rarely have I seen one from a professional attorney and company that wasn’t pretty short and sweet.
IMO this wasn’t really intended for Escapist, it was another way for Roberts to issue a rambling “oh YEAH?” to the world.
True story: I once forgot to take mine off while taking a flight for work, and as it turns out we use the same cards as someone at the airport. People waved me right through, and I was briefly really impressed with myself for being so important until, after a person at the little shop refused payment for a snack I was getting, she told me with a winning smile “No, we don’t charge pilots.” I hadn’t flown a plane in over a decade, and it was most certainly not for an airline. I looked down and saw the card dangling from my belt and felt like a moron.
wow, now everyone will want one! did they try to usher you to the flight deck!

Everyone involved in this story comes off as unhinged.

Didn’t even know that they don’t charge pilots.
Can’t imagine how scared they are that all this negativity will dent their crowdfunding stream. Sounds like they need that future cash to keep pouring in (perhaps had gotten a bit over-confident that it would over the last few years).
Looking at their numbers, I don’t think they are scared. This polemic, plus the “sale”, has shot funding through the roof (last 4 days, not that much compared to the overall amount)

For a ProxCard? I mean they are used by virtually everyone. They don’t even have a picture on them. They are just a little plastic square.

That letter comes off way worse than the wall of text CR put forth.
Who the fuck is running this company!? Why would you gloatingly post a letter you sent to another company?
…
…
That is EXACTLY what Derek Smart did.

Perhaps Chris Roberts is Derek Smart…

I get the feeling they are not a company. They are a kid in a candy shop who is bringing in enough money to eat all the candy he wants, and all the people he has surrounded himself with to help him load his bag with candy (OK, analogy gets weak once I get past kid in candy shop, LOL!)
This does look more and more unprofessional every day. Which is more OK I guess if I’m dealing with the Trese Brothers and waiting for Star Traders 2. In fact, I spent some money on something they put out, a book set in the Star Traders universe, spent $925 on it. Oh wait - no I spent $2 on it. ;) And they don’t come across as unprofessional as CR.
But I’m saying the same things over and over, sorry. Just frustrated/irritated.
I was at Fry’s today and happened to go by the joysticks, and I thought about getting one. Then I remembered there’s no hurry, as SC isn’t coming out anytime soon (if ever).
Chris probably should have done one of two things.

We don’t comment on rumor and speculation.

Release a 30-second clip of some mind-blowing pew-pew space action. (That would really shut up the critics, as well as open the flood gates to cash dollars.)
Since it’s fairly clear 2 wasn’t an option at this point, he should have stuck with 1. Now all he’s doing is getting mired in a fight he can’t win.
