Well, they are specifically including elements for players like yourself in the persistent universe. Not really the ability to turn off PvP, but the ability to say how much you are interested in it, and if you turn the slider all the way down, you’ll only really encounter other players in certain regions.
Or, you will also be able to host your own server if you like, and do whatever you want in it.
That’s the most reasonable thing you’ve posted in this thread so far! :)
Hope you don’t mind the ribbing. I actually kind of love that we have an upbeat Star Citizen defender in this thread. It would be pretty dull if it was just a bunch of us doom-and-gloomers crankily grumbling.

I don’t mind at all, I realize that not everyone has the same faith, or even desire for a final game that I do.
Although I’m clearly not the only one who is optimistic here, or likes what we’ve already seen.

What percentage of the backers are just base backers? In the Kickstarter you could get everything for as little as 30 bucks, and it’s still only 45 to get access to everything they make. I’d be perfectly happy with a serviceable game along the lines of Wing Commander or Freespace, and I think they can probably get something out the door. It’s the crazy MMO stuff they’ll likely fall flat on.
I second this. At this point it seems to be much easier to be skeptical (maybe it always is), but I like having the back-and-forth. Personally, I hope the game is great; I’ll need a new computer, but I do love me some pew-pew.
Hey man, it’s not just doom-and-gloomers. Some of us are legitimately amused at the whole drama (and the ludicrousness of Roberts’ promises) and are waiting to see if anything cool comes out of it, because gosh darn I will buy the hell out of half the game Mr. Roberts says he’s making…if it actually comes to pass.

They pulled in another 2 million in funding since yesterday.
This is a strong contender for Best Qt3 Historical Reference of 2015.

Feels nice to agree with Timex for a change, I’m all for his ambition, mankind has wasted more on way less fun things…
I sort of am a SC defender, not to the extent of their method of selling in game ships to raise funds, but pretty much everything else. If it does not sort of implode under it’s wide ranging vision, i think we can expect a very decent game, Roberts is quite aware his name is on this (which is also why i don’t buy the conspiracy-theories around all this) and as a perfectionist i don’t think he will settle for anything but ‘good’, especially if there is long-term aims to building on the base game us backers hope to get one day.
I’m more down on Elite:Dangerous than SC, even when one is an actual game (that many seem to enjoy enough), and the other not. I know the specific failings of Elite: Dangerous, where with SC who can say what it will be like just yet? It might be awesome :)
So i’m with Timex on this currently.

I honestly think what they showed on Saturday was very promising. There were actual assets, a stage demo with some issues (but a lot of them have those) and some cool looking flight models/in and out of ship EVA.
I think I was worried that there wasn’t a real game, and what they showed looked like a game (or at least an Alpha of one).
Really hope this does come out, still not backing it though. Not until we are closer to a for sure this is coming out stage. (pre-order time)
I’m not a backer, but I was definitely in the believer camp for a long time… until I saw Roberts’ rambling and unprofessional rant response to the Escapist article, and his supposed attorney’s response as well. Also, the video they released earlier focusing on the sound design for the FPS, proudly highlighting microphones in the actor’s ears. I thought at first that was a parody of losing-sight-of-your-goals game design.
Then I started thinking, perhaps the emperor has no clothes.
Meh - jackholes can still make great products. For instance, I still enjoy some Mel Gibson films. Well, those that don’t completely butcher history, anyway.
Tylertoo,
So you changed your mind based on internet drama rather than the material released this weekend at Citizen Con?
Can’t blame you for not being particularly excited about the sound design video though. :)

It´s also the game I would like to play but with a focus on singleplayer. With family and job I´m lucky to get one or two hours game time in the evening. So even in the rare cases when my friends have time and desire to play a multiplayer session, we usually fire up UT classic and meet on Deck16…
So naturally I was interested to see how they handle npc crew members for flight and also in fps raids, as that are the game mechanics that make or break the experience for me. Sadly, the whole gameplay demo could also be a new version of Space Engineers. I didn´t have the impression that they showed us an alpha but rather a tech demo/ proof of concept.
The other module, SQ42 is going to be released next year and according to Roberts is going to have a dynamic mission structure with “seamless transition between dogfighting and ground combat” but they can´t show us an example for a typical mission…
I was undecided until Saturday but after they showed us roughly 30 minutes of actual gameplay and talked over one hour about motion capturing and the hollywood cast, I´m starting to believe that Roberts is making an interactive movie rather than a game.
Still, I hope that I´m wrong…

But they kind of DID show us an example of a mission.
They flew to some comms station, fought some NPC pirates in space, EVA’ed into the satellite itself to turn it back on, then got back in their ships and flew off to some space station connected to the satellite, went inside, fought some other players for control of the space station’s comms array, which controlled access to other missions related to the other locations in the system.
I fired up the hangar module again last night, because if the alpha is getting close, I may as well be as up to date as I can be.
I get about 10 frames per second in the asteroid hangar, and when I tried to do the social module thing, it disconnected me, then crashed. I’ll be sticking with Elite until the next alpha drops, I think.
Performance is horrific for the most part. One can only hope that at release (if that happens), there will be optimisation done.
?? It runs perfectly at high settings on my 670. Very High settings tend to crash the game, but I’ve found all Cryengine games crash my computer if I push the graphics too high.
but yes, it’s unstable and prone to HD reading hiccups.
Yes, I changed my mind about my faith in Chris Roberts being able to pull this off. His reply to the Escapist, which he intentionally made public, gave me an insight into how he is handling his company and this game as a whole. No truly professional CEO would have released that, let alone written it.
