I have a 760 and Arena Combat runs like a dog? I’m not a 60 FPS guy but this was not a smooth ride in any way.

I am a $20 backer so I do have more than a passing interest in this coming out. I’ll admit I didn’t watch the presentation; can anyone who did confirm this. Squadron 42(the single player WC type game) has been delayed to some time in 2016 and the SQ 42 gameplay demo didn’t show any spaceflight or space battles just people walking around in the interior of a ship?

There was some space flight demo though right? Was that of the MMO part?

Ya, I was able to run it smoothly on a 670 as well, without issues.

Ya, the SQ42 demo basically just showed the introductory part of the game, prior to any missions.

Prior to that though, the first part of the conference demoed a fairly extensive multiplayer demo of the persistent universe. What folks are calling the “baby PU” at this point. It’s seemingly all the major components of the MMO aspect of the game, limited to one system (The Crusader system, which you can see on their starmap application they’ve put up on their website).

Can I access that as a backer?

That’s arena commander 2.0, so if you can access arena commander now, you will be able to access that when 2.0 hits (I think it’s going to be a while).

Yeah, when SC 2.0 comes out, all the backers will be able to access it. We’ll have to see when that is, but I figure it’s gonna be in the next month or so. Juan thinks it’ll be later I believe.

Yes, 1.3 was also announced and that has not yet hit (and it’s just a bunch of minor fixes). I’m guessing January for this.

Most professional CEO’s are cocks though. Who would sell their mothers for a buck. So there is that :)

Maybe Roberts is more a ‘get your hands dirty’ kind of guy, i mean he started as a hard-core code monkey didn’t he? Maybe he is that close to this, his brain child and longterm darling SC, that he gets all dirty harry when the likes of Derek Smart start having a go at him.

Comparing the Wing Commander games to the Battle Cruiser games sort of says it all on the game dev level, and the infamous Derek Smart whom has kind of been an original internet troll since they existed sort of says it all on the personal credibility score too perhaps? Maybe Roberts decided to do a ‘Derek’ because why not, they guy has been running his mouth about stuff he probably really does not know about in detail (he can make best guesses like the rest of us) and maybe that just ruffled some feathers. I’m not saying the way Roberts responded was the best action (i would have ignored it and got on with the show) to take, but in a pressure situation (all that money, all that overhead etc) about a personal project you are fully invested in, well we got what we did.

Maybe he really wanted to punch Derek on the nose rather that get all professional CEO with him? I could understand that.

Having said that i’m not going to defend something if it clearly is a scam, and currently i don’t think SC qualifies. Sure you can drop a real world cars worth of money on pretend ships that don’t exist yet (if your an id…erm i mean if your very rich), but you don’t have to. So the crap flinging coming Roberts way from that article and Derek is either just what it looks like, or as Baldrick from Blackadder would say, “A cunning plan”?

Derek Smart also attacked Roberts and his wife on a personal (and creepy) level. That can inspire less than rational responses.

That’s not at all the case. I’ve dealt with quite a lot of them over my career, and the vast majority are professional, intelligent, work their tails off and care about their people. You generally don’t get that job if you’re a crazy person who alienates good employees.

There are exceptions, of course. If the CEO is also the owner, anything is possible.

Well, and I must report to the contrary: I had to throttle down the graphic settings, because it was crashing my GPU showing me a beautiful pop-up with a DirectX error message about “buffers not being managed properly”.

Indeed, this is not a specific problem to SC. I have had trouble with pretty much every game using DirectX 11 since late 2014 or so.

What driver version are you running currently?

Of the 8 CEOs I’ve worked for who I know anything about:

1 was a nice guy, but a mild-mannered caretaker who didn’t actually do anything
1 was a polished corporate dick who did damage to the company and who sold out to a capital management firm
1 was an old-school monster who sold out his company for a hundred million for himself – but at least it was to a competitor
1 was a hard-ass corporate sociopath who admittedly did a lot for his company but who I wouldn’t want to shake hands with
1 was a fast-talking con-man and general scumbag
1 was a brilliant guy who built his company from the ground up, and sold out when the time was right, making sure employees got a good deal out of it.
1 was Larry Page, and if I say anything about him some search algorithm will hold me accountable.

Having watched the important bits of that presentation, I have mixed feelings. They’ve undoubtedly shown progress, you can see it slowly coming together, but it’s obviously still at that janky stage where there’s no polish, no optimisation, and frankly no “magic” yet that makes me want to play it long-term. I’m not sure yet what meta-structure there will be to make the basic gameplay compelling. I know a lot of dev teams talk about <insert great game> not coming together until the last few months / weeks of development, and as an eternal optimist I’m willing to keep this in the “has potential” category.

I was a bit surprised that we didn’t at least see a single mission play out in SQ42. I mean, even if the game is being delivered in Dec 2016, surely they’d have strung something together for the presentation? The cinematics and general wandering around the station tutorial are great and all, but show me the game first so the fluff is more likely to impress me later. However, I don’t think we should expect SQ42 to play out any differently to every previous CR game; cinematics and story have always been front and center for him, even the first WC game with its basic animations. The only one of his game that didn’t feature this heavily, Freelancer, is perhaps not coincidentally the only one he wasn’t fully involved in.

Still, I’m actually quite pleased that they’re introducing other gameplay elements into SQ42, making it more like a story-led version of the PU game.

You have a slightly better hit rate than my history. Larry probably knows of whom I speak.

From personal experience and media reports, I’ll hazard a guess that the amount of asshole in the CEO is generally proportional to the size of the company/amount of money he stands to make.

to be fair, he’s also keeping one of the CEOs a secret, so that one probably killed some babies.

I’ve met and known 3, and all 3 belonged to this category: “…was a hard-ass corporate sociopath who admittedly did a lot for his company but who I wouldn’t want to shake hands with”

I can partially credit them with being a much nicer business owner than I may have otherwise been.

For me that was Ivan Seidenberg. He first of all devoured GTE to form Verizon, then made Verizon utterly dominant for a while by crushing the nascent CLEC industry with the able assistance of Bill Barr, and his deals and guidance helped turn Verizon Wireless from a minor player into a national contender. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he was actually an uplifted snake with a good make-up artist.

After a lengthy multi-year absence…

I’m back.

You’re all fucked.

The End.
