Sure, why not? Whoever it is (and I’m inclined to believe it is Derek Smart based on the 2002 creation date) came in, dropped off a link, and popped out. He wasn’t insulting to any of us and there’s really nothing much to discuss at this point except the progress of the game, and whether or not CIG is spending their money wisely.
Same here :)
Haha. wb :)
Time to watch those citizen con videos then. SQ42 next year™… hopefully I guess.
Finally got to see “my” constellation (or it could have been one of the other 234 models they started selling) in flight, and even a pretty explosion in one of the other linked videos.
I was responding to your “fuck yes”. That’s not someone reacting to a newcomer whom he expects to drop a link and meekly disappear.
I don’t have a specific concern about more people joining the debate beyond that.

Well, my “fuck yes” was due to Derek Smart maybe contributing to the thread. Since we’re talking about him anyway, I’d love for him to give us his direct input.
If all he does is drop off that link, so be it. I won’t be as happy, but it’s still nice of Derek to drop by.

I might have tried to mention S 3 r g 3 y B r 1 n but possibly his autoredaction AI got to the post before it made it to the Q23 servers…
Are we sure its really Derek? Can someone tweet him to confirm?

he only posted 3 times?
all his old stuff got deleted
It was before my knowing about Qt3, but i understand he had been banned at some point, for some stuff etc.
Anyway i did get to play one (or two) of the Battle Cruiser games, and while clunky to play (and difficult to get running on my hardware i seem to remember) where not as bad as maybe the popular press liked to make out. So i hope he does join the discussion, although i’m sure he will be keenly aware that in terms of whatever his nefarious plans are for CIG and Chris Roberts, he probably better watch what he posts…especially if this is all heading legal.
As for the Citizencon event (what a great name for the conspiracy followers of SC!), the only thing i thought was odd was Chris’s wife’s emotional melt down at the start. I understand she has been under some kind of hate campaign (and if so was that GamersGate related, they love to bully women like all true men heroes!), so i was not sure if it might be due to that?
As for what they showed, sure a bunch of famous actors and uncanny valley face stuff that is the staple of AAA these days, it was something. I can’t help feeling that if this was a long-con they would be better spending less money on all the stuff we get to see that they do spend money on?
You could really just drop the mic at that point and walk off stage :D

With that kind of budget they could have actually afforded a custom engine, instead of fighting an hopeless battle with Cryengine.
At least even if the game failed they could still have had some good technology to sell.
It was probably a time issue thing? Building an engine (for something like SC) takes longer than we will be waiting for SC as it is.
oh my god i love everything about this post
FWIW…He confirmed to me on Twitter that he indeed posted.

I’m a day late, way off topic, and nobody cares, but… no. Gates and Jobs were both business guys (both of them either very good or very lucky). Gates had Paul Allen to do all the tech stuff, and Jobs had Woz of course. Whether or not they were decent people, I have no idea.
Not following the full discussion here because I don’t have the one to but I heard on the Bombcast that CD Projekt said they spent $80 million to make Witcher 3. Will an extra ten mil bridge the gap between that open world and what they’re promising with Star Citizen?

Gladwellian bullshit aside, JoshL is entirely correct on this. Both were amazing business leaders – either very good, very lucky, or both – but neither was actually an amazing tech person. I would further posit that, prior to retirement Gates) and death (Jobs), both were so obsessed with their products that they were not particularly nice human beings, either.

Jobs denied paternity for his daughter for years. He was a huge dickhead in many ways.
Of course, I say “in many ways”, because like all people he was a complex human being. He was neither good nor evil. He did great things, and he did terrible things.

I have been known to engage in many kinds of bullshit, but I’m not actually aware of “Gladwellian bullshit”. I don’t think googling will help. What does it mean? (I really only posted because it bugs me when the guys who did the actual work get overlooked).
There’s usually luck involved, but the key is being able to seize upon the opportunity luck presents.

Poor phrasing on my part, since I wasn’t trying to imply you were the purveyor of said bullshit. Malcolm Gladwell in his steaming pile of shit bestseller “Outliers” took a theory that applied to musical prodigies – that they need 10,000 hours of practice to become world class – and applied it to anyone in virtually any profession. His primary exhibit? Bill Gates, who spent 10,000 hours learning to program as a kid/young adult. My point was that Gates’ success had relatively little to do with his programming skill and a great deal to do with either his business acumen or luck (I think it was the former, but respect that it could have been the latter).
