gameplay trailer
Awesome new 4x game in the making. As soon as I read on strategyinformer about it and that pre-ordering gives you access to the alpha and upcoming versions, I immediately grabbed my e-wallet.
The game is lots of fun to play already. So you have an idea I spent almost 6 hours on it today.
This year is becoming one of the best years for 4x games ever, and star lords is so far the most promising imo.
If someone told me two years ago we would have such big titles in the genre in 2012, I would laugh in his face.

Single player only or does it support multiplayer as well? And yea, it’s turning out to be a real banner year for TBS games. I’m loving it, as I thought my favorite genre was going the way of the dodo.
EDIT: Couldn’t get the page to load previously but it came up now, so I answered my own question regarding MP:
Lan, hot seat and Online multiplayer with matchmaking.

Ooo, saw the gameplay video - that looks like MOO2 style tactical combat!
As soon as this becomes available on Steam or GamersGate I’m going to jump all over it.
Yup, tactical combat :)
By the way someone correct me if I’m wrong, but by buying the game in some other place other than their own site the devs do not get full profit (they have to share a certain % with the distribution channel). This was the main reason why I didn’t wait for the game to come out on steam, and so far it was worth every penny, and it’s not even in it’s beta stages. These guies definitely deserve a truck full of money for making such a promising game, but also for helping revive the genre :)

That’s correct, I believe the rumored/estimated figure is that digital retailers like Steam take about 30%, but I’m sure it also varies based on individual contracts. I’m sometimes willing to buy from a dev studio directly, but I have to be familiar enough with them to make sure it’s worth my while and make sure I’ll be able to download the game again in a few years if I lose the installer. I place a good amount of value of being able to keep my catalog relatively centralized (Steam, GamersGate, etc).
Wait a damn minute! Star Lords was the name of the Master of Orion prototype.
Pretty sneaky, sis.

It was a prototype? I have that game and its pretty good actually.
Yeah, it sure is. It’s crazy to me it’s so good.

Weird - I have the boxed game with manual and everything.

Are you sure your boxed game isn’t missing the “s” in the end?

About this new Star Lords, the choice of no Z axis at all (not even as fluff) seems a bit strange, especally since they showcase it explicitly in the trailer several times (having all the planets and stars on a “platter” looks odd), but other than that … yeah, looks quite promising.

Hah - thats the one! I was also thinking it was a weird prototype for Master of Orion, since it wasn’t the same game :-D
Anyways - Thanks for bringing this new game to our attention as well. Endless Space was fun , but I don’t play it anymore…for some reason it doesnt click with me.
Yeah, Endless Space was pretty disappointing, in my opinion. In fact, although a lot of 4x games are being made at the moment, most of them don’t seem that interesting (imo again).
This game does look interesting, though, so I’ll be looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
Agreed Nikolaj, too often the new games are a little too streamlined or simplified in important area’s that means they struggle to hold the attention like the old classics still do. For example even though that Microprose Starlord game was not the most awesome it had a depth to it that made it interesting enough if you could struggle through the GUI issues.

So fingers crossed this new StarLords game includes some real depth.
I wonder what this one is going to not have that MoO2 does? :)
Looks like it doesn’t have a very interesting planet development aspect, for one thing.
I’m getting a bit tired of reinventions of the wheel yes…

No ship design, for one thing. That doesn’t bother me any, but I know it does other people. I’m holding out on this just because I want to see how Legend of Pegasus turns out (hoping for a demo).
Ugh, tactical combat. Have fun, everyone else.

No ship design or meaningful planet management? Ah well. Next.
I really wonder why seemingly all the 4x devs believe they can ship their car with three wheels and it’ll be just as good a car as the 4 wheeled ones.

Lol, did you want to post in a FPS thread, perchance?

Actually, I wonder why its so hard to make that kind of games, since the Master of Orion games 1 and 2 games werent made by awesomely big teams. Is it really just art assets that takes up so much time and money that developers cant afford the time and effort to make a “full” game with all 4 wheels, as Rezaf suggested?
I mean, even Endless Space which by all accounts are experienced developers, who got money from a lot of pre-purchases, were almost out of money and had to release.
