So far, I don’t think that anyone’s upgrades have affected the outcomes of any matches. There have been a few shenanigans, but they have all been fairly cosmetic, if you ask me.

They can’t, you’re right. I think the only big issue here is your point about playing best of threes. I’m still not sure how to address that. I don’t want people to feel pressured to play best of threes when they simply don’t have the time for it.
There are upgrades that can boost scores, but there are also upgrades that can destroy upgrades. I think that winning matches is way more important than gaining upgrades. At least, that’s my intent. I just don’t see the upgrades as leading to a snowballing effect.
As far as I can tell from the rules, none of this effects the individual results, i.e. Only wins count toward individual results, playoff qualification, etc. Is that right?
On the team results, though, it’s borked. Your reward and scoring system concentrates the impact of victories, which was the problem in Dis with the individual scoring. And the reward mechanism for one team basically rewards winning, while the reward mechanism for the other teams requires more than victories.
But of course people can just ignore the team stuff. Which I will henceforth do.

I suppose that the reason I’ve never become a really good SR player is that I can’t quite figure out what is the difference between the decisions I make and those made by Mithropon, Holsten, etc.
For example: vs Mith, early in the game. Trade row has Blob World, Brain World, Command Ship, War World and Mech World. Mith has the Needle (he went 2nd - nothing I could have done about that one), but nothing much else so far. I played the blob ‘scrap for 3 trade’ thing. I could have saved it and had a reasonable chance at pulling 8 trade next turn, or I could scrap it and buy the mech world. I have a Patrol Mech and a couple of explorers. I figure I still have a decent chance of pulling Patrol + Explorer + 3 scouts (or the other explorer), while Mith has nothing currently that could add up to 8. Nor does he have enough damage to kill the Mech World, so it should be able to stay up for at least a couple of turns until he buys more damage, which would be hard with the trade row clogged with 8-cost cards.
So I buy the Mech World. And a Freighter replaces it - blowing up my whole plan and probably losing the game (and match).
I assume the pros would have just bought an Explorer and used the 3 trade the next turn - but why? Is is a simple matter of “don’t try to figure the odds, just assume that the next card up will be exactly the one that screws you”?
I would have bought the Mech World also. But I suck :-/

@ron hard to tell without knowing the complete decks, but this just sounds like bad luck. I do consider not to buy anything (or just explorer) if I see my opponent can’t afford any card, to avoid revealing good cards for him.
I guess I would have saved the green base for a real good card (I don’t like the mech world so much), but that is easy to say with knowing the result. And your choice was not wrong ;-)

Mithrophon is in Sector 04 and his ship Men Without Helmets has these upgrades:
o Repair Module: (1x) Prevent the destruction of another of your upgrades.
o Headquarters: At the end, boost (by 2) the points earned by each team member in your final sector.
o Green Jewel: The Green team score increases by 1-3-6-10 (etc) based on the total number of Green jewels owned by all of the Green team members at the end of the adventure.
