I liked having the groupings be dependent on the number of points earned in the past 3 seasons. Did anyone have any problem with it? Seems like it led to a lot of super close shaves within groups. And it led to ineffablebob, who has been in 4 of the past 7 seasons’s finals, getting 2 points. Let’s call that an “outlier”.

It has some perverse incentives, in that it “punishes” good records by giving them a harder road to the playoffs in future seasons and vice versa. If you get off to a bad start and lose your first couple games, then you could easily game the system by losing the rest to get bumped down to get into the lowest tier and have a better chance of making the playoffs next season.

That said, I like the bragging rights aspect of working your way up and playing against others who have also done well recently, and am not sure it’s worth worrying about too much for a league on this scale. The simplest tweak that occurs to me would be to say that the top group sends three players to the playoffs and the bottom group sends one, so there’s some mechanical incentive to moving up.

I thought about that, when I could see that you and Mithrophon had 7 points and my max was 6. And then I thought, well, we are just pals having fun, and didn’t worry about anyone actually tanking on purpose, New York Knicks style. Your tweak sounds interesting, though, and would have gotten me into the playoffs this time around, so let’s do it! :P (Just kidding… gotta think on it.)
