Beatrix builds a Blob Carrier to display beside his Dreadnaught in intimidating fashion. But Dave’s authority in the system stands at 52. The people are behind him!

Dave has a Battlecruiser and Flagship, with a Merc Cruiser and Patrol Mech in support. A solitary Viper probes at Beatrix’s defenses. A Cutter and a Mech World stand nearby, ready to fight for whomever can pay them…

The Merc Cruiser poses a particular puzzle: Do I make it yellow so that the Battlecruiser forces Beatrix to discard one, or blue so that the Flagship gives me 5 authority, or red so that the Patrol Mech can scrap one of my last three starter cards?

The rebel admiral calls together his staff. The XO points out that Beatrix’s current available fleet includes two Vipers among its seven ships, so the impact of a discard will likely be minimal. She also points to the 52 authority as being enough to withstand several cycles of Beatrix’s arsenal.

The admiral and his XO exchange glances, then the admiral picks up the comm. “Pay those Mercs with Machine Cult money,” he says.

He inspects his fleet: 21 power among them, and the Brain World has 6 defense. That would put Beatrix’s authority at 14. The Battlecruiser could ram itself into the Brain World and reduce Beatrix to 8 authority.

The XO mentions that with only 1 ship to draw, the Battlecruiser and Flagship will cycle the deck, burying all of these powerful ships in the draw pile. The seven ships and bases that will cycle into play have exactly 8 power among them.

The admiral himself asks the Viper pilot what Beatrix has in store. “The Dreadnaught appears to be ready, sir, and he has a Blob Wheel spinning into orbit from behind the gas giant. An Embassy Yacht appears to be the only support ship among the remaining five.”

“Shoot a monkey,” the admiral mutters. The Embassy Ship will increase Beatrix’s authority by three, which will be just enough to deny the rebels the victory next round. The XO says, “Sir, keep the Battlecruiser. The game will extend, but our authority is very high in all areas of the star system. The people of all of these worlds want you to be their leader.”

The admiral stares at the colors dotting the tactical map.

“Carry out my orders as stated,” the admiral finally says. The XO salutes and spins on her heel.

** No actual monkeys were harmed during this massive space battle.

Beatrix raises his authority to 15 by establishing an embassy, and his Dreadnaught rakes the rebel fleet for screen-shaking damage. The rebels stand at 39.

The rebel XO points out a Blob Destroyer hovering near the asteroid field. “Our Megahauler can easily persuade them to join us,” she says, “and then our Survey Ship can link them into the current battle.”

“Do it,” the admiral says. “The battle will be ours.”

But the sensors chief calls out, “The Survey Ship just untethered and is not responding!”

Through the windows, the admiral and XO can see the Survey Ship gathering speed. “How many occupants?” the admiral shouts.

“One.”

“Shoot it,” says the admiral. And a torpedo chases after it. The admiral does not even watch the impact. “We had this won except for the spy who just stole that ship,” he says. A quick calculation tells him that now the fight is not, in fact, over.

“Balloons!” he mutters, and glowers at the XO. She is busy with the tactical display and he lets her think.

(I really did have the game won had I used the Megahauler to take the Destroyer and then draw it with the Survey Ship. But I played the Survey Ship first.)

“What are you puzzling over?” the rebel admiral asks the XO.

She points at the Destroyer, and then at a Merc Cruiser about 100km beyond it. “Our own Merc is likely, but not certain, to be available in a turn,” she says. “I am puzzling over which of these ships will help us the most.”

“If we bypass the Destroyer and hire the Merc,” the admiral warns, “the Blob captain will almost certainly assist Beatrix.”

“True,” says the XO, “but it will not cycle immediately, and the battle will almost certainly be finished before then.”

“What bases does Beatrix have operational?” asks the admiral.

“The Brain World is almost ready, and also a Mech World,” she replies. “Each with about a 50% chance of deploying immediately.”

“That Destroyer may prove the difference, then,” says the admiral, “if our own Merc can support it in destroying a base. Send the 'hauler after the Destroyer.”

The XO salutes. “Attack his Wheel, sir?” she asks.

The admiral nods at the green blip on the tactical display that represents the enemy Blob Carrier. The XO nods in return and gives the order.

“One last thing,” she says when she turns back to the admiral. “Our Battle Station. The enemy’s authority is 11. Do we require the Station’s defense? Or shall we convert it and attack, lowering his authority to 6?”

“Attack,” says the admiral. “Our authority is at 44 and we still have the Fortress to protect us. And tell the captain of the Battlecruiser that in the upcoming fight, we may need him to give his ship for the cause.”

He leaves the bridge to investigate the Survey Ship incident in person.

“Our foe was able to fully power both Worlds,” the XO says. “Shall I inform the Battlecruiser?”

“And the Merc,” the admiral says. “Tell it to support the Destroyer, and we can clear both bases.”

The XO looks uncomfortable. “The Merc is not quite ready to assist, sir,” she says. “It’s in the queue, as is the Flagship.”

“Bubble wrap!” curses the rebel admiral. The bridge falls silent.

“Sir,” shouts one of the sensors crew. “An Imperial Frigate launched a plasma bomb. We have one Viper ready to intercept.”

“Do it,” the admiral says. He drums his fingers on the tactical display. “You say that our Flagship and Merc are in reserve?” he asks the XO. She nods. “Then the captain of the Battlecruiser holds the key to the entire battle. Who currently captains it?”

“Colonel Alexandra, sir,” replies the XO.

The admiral’s smile steals across his lips like a shadow. “She trained with Beatrix?”

“She was his XO.” Now the rebel XO smiles as well…

lol…

“Colonel Alexandra,” the rebel admiral says. “Does Beatrix know?”

The colonel’s shrug is almost imperceptible on the screen. “He will soon,” she says. “When the scrapped remains of my cruiser slam into that Brain World. He taught me this maneuver when we faced Chronic and DennyA.”

“There will be no need for that,” the admiral says. “Keep your ship. Your arrival convinced our Flagship to join this round, and they brought the Mercs with them. The Mercs can support the Blob Destroyer in an attack on the Brain World, and then we will have no trouble finishing the battle.”

The colonel looks a little relieved. “What will our authority in the system be?”

The XO responds. “We will end at 44 of 50, sir,” she says.

“So,” the admiral says, “we will need you, Colonel, to help stabilize our control. Beatrix has many powerful ships and he is sure to come back to challenge this outcome. Now let’s finish.”

The screen flickers off and the admiral and XO allow themselves a brief, satisfied look. They turn to the window and see Beatrix’s bases and ships flicker out as they exit the system. The guns on the rebel Flagship still glow red against the black star field.

The admiral points at the Flagship. “She is yours, General Ankamela,” he says. “Keep us safe.”

The ex-XO salutes and turns back to the window. The admiral smiles and looks at the photos of Admirals Gpxxxtreme and Thraeg that are pinned to his monitor. “Thank Wattington,” the admiral murmurs, placing his fingertips on the photos.

Then with a small sigh he turns himself to the task of running a star system.

2 wins last time, 2 losses this time. Ah, chance.

These Events take randomness to new heights. Some turns its like “So - you thought you were playing this game, eh? Let’s just throw everything out and make it a totally different game.” The ‘everyone scrap two cards’ card is totally not random, because it always appears when I have played my full hand and have nothing I want to scrap in my discard pile. Not that I’m bitter about that, mind you.

Adrift in an escape pod, Thraeg watches the distant laser blasts raking across the void before finally falling still. “Well done, former wingman. You have finished what I was unable to.” As the pod spirals endlessly further into deep space, he lifts a bulb of the finest scotch. “Rule well, bananadmiral.”

:) :)

And he was known as bananadmiral until the end of his days! (Not Thraeg.)
