ydejin, it sure seems like you are on a personal agenda favoring this game. Did Cryptic offer you up for a job once? Did the Cryptic CEO gave you a dog? I realize being positive is kind-of your shtick, but this is getting ridiculous.
(…with the same respect as you treat your fellow)
Nope, got no beef with either Cryptic or STO. I just find the concept of paying for a life time subscription for how many dollars in advance not the best of investments, especially since most indicators are still there for a not-too-bright-of-a-future (the offering of life time sub itself is usually a sign of lack of confidence in the product).
This game is just out of the launch bed with already a cranky squeaky beta and bugs which should not be at retail and little content to show for…I wouldn’t say it’s doing very well starting on, see where it stand in five or so months.

Honestly, I don’t. Not really. Yet, still, it itches the skin.
I feel like the BlackMage character in Brian’s 8bit theater. Either Fighter or Red Mage just said/done something really dumb and I stand there with my hands up going “FSSSS” as words fail me in face of the astonishing shock.

No, I’m comparing it to Champions Online, SWG, Vanguard and others.
Also, “Yet to be determined success”? More like “yet to be determined if it’ll float past the next six months”.
Enjoy ahead, mr. laughable out of your mind.

I do this with all games I like. Mass Efffect, Civ4, Fall from Heaven, you name it. If I like a game I go into Fanboi mode. I freely admit to being very positive and supportive. Yep that’s my shtick.

Sorry I can’t get into going around pissing in other people’s cornflakes with you Foxstab. That’s just not my style.

No, but they did develop this really cool game that I’m enjoying a lot.

I see you’re here to play ‘games’. Sorry, not interested. I’ve made my point first time around. Have fun in solo mode.

Which of us is here to play games Foxstab. Have you contributed anything meaningful to this discussion? Can you contribute anything meaningful to the discussion given the fact you posted a few days ago that you hadn’t even tried the game:

Foxstab, any chance you could, you know, just fuck off out of the thread? I’m sure there will be people with problems stemming from actually playing the game over the coming weeks. Moaning for 40, 50 posts about a game you’re not playing whilst the rest of us are is just tedious. And very… Kotaku commenter.

You could just join us in the playing it thread instead. :D

Since it’s $240 for lifetime, and the per month fee is $15, $240/$15 per month=16 months. So, on Month 16, Day 1, I will, indeed, be playing subscription free, whereas those who did not purchase the lifetime will be dropping another $15 (assuming that’s the rate plan they chose) to continue playing. :-)

You appear to have difficulty remembering what you post, which isn’t surprising, since you’re all over the place with your ramblings.

Your peers determine whether or not you’ve made your point, not you, the person trying to make the point. Do you see how that works?

STOP

QUOTING

THE

CRAZY

I quite agree. I keep reading this thread despite having resolved not to return, now that Open Beta is closed, due to the way ground combat works and how unfinished things like that huge field of Borg Cubes felt. So I must have some residual affection for the game.

Yet even if it had grabbed me as much as CoH did, 16 months is a huge gamble. Only for WoW would that gamble have paid off for me. And given what’s happened with Champions Online just a few months after release, I’m having trouble seeing Cryptic providing the kind of constant updates they did for CoH.

Crazy like a fox!

Goddam I hate those commercials.

No, Gus, don’t! If you attempt to argue with logic they’d crucify you!

I feel dirty now.

I just picked up STO Deluxe from Amazon’s DD service for $5. I figured that even if I only play it for the first 30 days, I will have gotten my money’s worth just to see what’s up.

Initial thoughts:

  1. The Away Team ground combat is awful. I like the concept of having an away team, but the execution feels just like Champions Online. I know that “feels like” is hard to quantify, but I can’t think of a better way to describe it. It’s just clumsy. Some of it is the normal MMO-style stuff, but I really think that if I were to replace the graphics with Champions textures, I’d never know the difference. Maybe it’s just that the way the shows and movies have protrayed phaser combat has stuck in my mind so the goofy canned game combat really looks dumb.

  2. Ship to ship combat is actually pretty good. In fact, just about everything to do with the ship stuff is a welcome change from the normal MMO mechanics. For example, I like that piloting the ship can be done manually. Zooming around space in my Reliant knock-off is very cool. It doesn’t hurt that the ship designs and space stuff looks very much like something out of Trek.

  3. The universe is vast and empty and apparently STO’s servers as well. Seriously, where are the players? I know you don’t want things so crowded that players are waiting in line all the time to finish quests, but this felt like I was playing a single player game. It was just barren.

Conclusion: This game needs to go FTP as soon as possible. I’d play this game just for the starship combat, but there’s no way I’d pay $15 a month for it. If it went FTP, I’d likely even purchase some of the vanity ship items every now and then.

Some of the problem has to do with instancing. I kinda like the feeling of empty space rather than the universe being one big traffic jam but others don’t, so much.

Many of the players are in the end game quadrants with their “Admirals” (seriously, we’re all just captains) so middle-range regions can feel very quiet. The newbie area around Sol had decent traffic last I was playing. That wasn’t more than a month ago.

yeah the instancing is still very bad, I want to play with people, most of the time I meet up with 2 players if I am lucky.

ground combat does suck, very badly, but its being addressed for Season 4 (coming in February?)

crafting in game has gotten 100% better, its still not great, but if any of you played when the game started, it made a river of tears through the quadrant.

I resubbed for a while, and just cancelled it again. Still feels lonely out in space, even in fleet actions. Needs to have standard integrated voice chat or something to add some multiplayer feel. When fighting, it is too hectic to try and chat or even read the chat box.

If the game went F2P, then I think I would be willing to play more, but I don’t get my monthly subscription rate in fun out of it yet. I think this type of game would work well though for F2P, with vanity ships, costumes, devices and such they could make it work. I think better than they are trying with Champions Online.

I like the player density in the DS9 Area. There are other ships about all the time, but not huge numbers of them. If the game was chock full of ships it wouldn’t feel right to me. Enterprise spent a lot of time out exploring on its own.

What are they changing, exactly?

They haven’t said exactly, the lead developer just mentioned that there are major changes coming for ground combat in Season 4, and seeing as how they have held true to their previous promises, I can assume they will follow through.
