Woot! Got my fleet invite - guess no one was on this afternoon?
Hit lvl 35 and not finding the sluggish turn rate of the exploration cruiser to be that bad. I did start another toon as a Tactical and that looks like it will be fun too.
I’m in for fleet stuff, just not VA yet. :)

God damn this wonderful game. Started messing with STFs. End game PvE isn’t long ridiculous raids like almost every other MMO, they’re 5 man missions you can knock out in 20-60 minutes depending how competent everyone is, and everyone gets individual loot sacks containing stuff that can be exchanged for phat purpz and set pieces, with a bonus loot sack for rolling for if a bonus objective is completed. Just from dicking around today I’ve got a MACO shield and a borg engine.
Hadn’t touched this game before going free to play, but now I’ve got something like 70 hours played and am level 50 and still enjoying it. Had to pay exactly $0 to get to this point, but now I’m here I know I’m going to spend money for more character slots so I can level engineer and science commanders, if nothing else. No idea if their free to play model is working on their end (I assume so due to all the galor unboxing spam I get) but it certainly works for me. Only others I’ve tried were DDO (Decent since most of the unlocks were account-wide, but since it was so group-heavy I quit before buying anything) and LotRO (Bothered me how much was per-character, and free characters were gimped more than STO or DDO. Didn’t play long at all).
I think my absolute favorite thing about STO is how laid back it is. It’s easy to get around the game world (Especially if you spend credits to transwarp to missions), easy to level, the missions fairly regularly have some entertaining wrinkle or setpiece, you get new ships and abilities at a good clip while leveling, no raids. Really surprised me since I expected some half-baked WoW in space, I guess.
Rear Admiral Lower Half Smut has transfered his new flag to the Sovereign-class cruiser U.S.S. Triton.
So now I need to fit this bad girl out - always the fun part. :)
Question - how can I see if anyone from the Fleet is on? Some of the interface decisions are a bit maddening - maybe I’m just spoiled by LOTRO. I wish there was a way to make the buffs/debuffs icons larger (middle aged eyes) - maybe there is but I haven’t found it. Still enjoying the game a lot, some interesting missions (like the Vault, where you are flying a shuttle inside a giant station) and just enough rewards to keep you hooked. I could do without all the damn gift boxes though…

So after finally reaching level 50 and almost completing the Borg episode, I find myself getting … bored. I tire of the constant battles and wish things like diplomacy and exploration weren’t essentially an afterthought for this game. I’ll probably keep going but at a much slower pace, just to see what new stuff comes out now and then.
I have close to 60 of those goddamn lock boxes, and I even hit Pass on every opportunity, but you automatically get 1-2 every time you win an STF, no matter if you don’t want them.
The biggest bullshit is that you get a “Mystery Box”, but the only thing I’ve ever gotten in those things is a fucking lockbox. I’m not buying any fucking keys for this shit, either. Fuck them.
I’ve only seen TWO gold lockboxes drop in two fucking weeks of this. And of course I never got a single one.
Haha… I have at least 100 of those boxes. Bought a couple of keys and got junk, so I’m done with the current racket.
I could see where it will eventually get boring, but I’m not there yet. I really enjoy the space combat, but I was a huge SFC fan. I also have my Tactical alt to level, lol…

I’m just a beginner, but wanted to see how people are managing the space battles as far as inputs.
I have my left hand on the WASD key. I seem constantly hold down a key because I have not found a way to input a turn and have the ship track it. The left hand also changes my speed.
My right hand uses the number pad to fire weapons. It then reaches over to grab the mouse to either buff/debuff, change energy allocation, or otherwise interact with the HUD.
This seems awefully clumsy…is there a better way?
right click on the weapons icons, and it will set them to autofire, that way your right hand can use the mouse all the time, and focus on clicking on BO powers and stuff in your hot bar.
I got a gold one and accidentally deleted it attempting to delete email from the horrid email interface. :O
I dropped about 20 of the regular boxes in the fleet bank before it occurred to me that you probably all have tons of them too. Oh well, I’ll go back and dump them if they annoy anybody. I do have a gold one that I can drop if anyone wants to pick it up.
How do you assign weapons to shortcut keys? I just upgraded my initial tin can to something that looks Enterprise-like, and it’s swapped all the hotkeys around for the fore/aft weapons - very confusing. I could set them to autofire as mentioned above, but I like pressing buttons dammit!
Put your phasers on auto-fire, and just press buttons for your torpedoes. Drag your torpedo icon to button 1?
The all front all back would work perfectly if mines were not included as a torpedo.
I’ll be taking a STO break, leveled 2 characters to RA in 4 weeks.
I’ll give the new Featured series a proper play through once they are all released.
When I do return , it will be time to level up a Klingon and get one of them spiffy carriers.

If you like pressing buttons, spacebar fires all energy weapons, and ctrl+spacebar fires torpedoes. Basically just hammer spacebar all the time then ctrl+spacebar when (or just before) the shields drop.

Or just set your beams to auto-fire, until you get top range cruisers that’s definitely the way to go because you don’t have to worry about power management when you only have 4 beams max anyway.
4 beams…HAH. I run with 6 beams. Rare EPS conduit for the win.
I was referring to the early stages of the game, when your limited in weapon slots. You can run 8 beams at a time before you manage to actually decrease your DPS.
Today’s new episode is very cool. Takes place inside the Federation’s most secure prison. If STO had a lot more of this, it’d be a killer MMO.
