What have they done to the combat in this game? I’m re-playing the tutorial and am unable to shoot the Borg devices. Clicking the left mouse button while the device is targeted does nothing.
Are you in FPS mode or 3rd person mode (RPG mode)?
They probably made the new action mode the default. Which is one of the same stupid mistakes SWG made after NGE. MMO players trying the game were lost because they were trying to cater to shooter fans. Go into your Options. Somewhere should be a selection for the original control setup.
There’s a way to toggle 'em back and forth in game, I think, but I’m not at a computer where I can check it out now and I don’t remember offhand. Some folks do seem to like the shooter controls/system but I’m definitely not one of them.
It looks like the patch removed the three action icons from my action bar for my phaser (normal attack, stun, and melee attack), but I have no idea how to get them back. Does anyone know? Ugh…
I like the shooter controls, it gives the game a “Star Trek Elite Force” feel.

No, it is going F2P in the middle of January.

Apparently Stahl is back as Senior Producer of something-or-other… which my brain can’t quite process. Apparently working for Zynga was horrible enough that you’d ask for an inferior position at your former second-rate stuidio, who knew?

Because it is a decent MMO, especially for fans of the license?
As far as I can remember you have to hold right or left mouse button and drag the skill from the menu to the bar , I think it’s P to open the skill window ?
Have duty officers been added yet and what do they add ? I haven’t seen anything detailed about them yet and haven’t actually played the game in months .
It’s not terrible. But it’s never really been what a Star Trek MMO needs to be. The heart and soul needs to be a functional ship’s bridge and the officers who make up the bridge crew/away team and that really needs to be a player party. There’s really no getting around it. I enjoyed the custom NPC crew member aspect. I’d love more MMOs to let us assemble an entire party of our own making for adventures (how cool would it be to create your own entire superteam in CoH for example?!).
But it’s not quite the right center of gravity for a multiplayer Star Trek experience.
Beyond that are other issues like Exploration not being so much exploration but a big fat gerbil wheel. There isn’t anything interesting out there and it gets insanely repetitive. I’d had some hopes up with the early talk about the Genesis system for creating worlds. What I didn’t understand then was that it was just a developer tool not a mechanism for on-the-fly creation of places you hadn’t seen before and things to do you might not have done yet. Singleplayer games have all kinds of content creation engines for replayable experiences. Why is it that randomized systems in MMOs always seem so fucking unimaginative? You even mention the word “random” in an MMO forum and people groan. Well they should. Nobody’s done it right yet.
Then they also missed by focusing so intently on combat. Why not make a game that’s got some egghead appeal? Not every MMO player is a drooling moron and those folks already have plenty of MMOs to chose from. Why not toss some sciency content into exploration at least? It’s not like Star Trek and NASA, just for starters, don’t have a positive relationship that stretches back to the 60’s. What institute wouldn’t kill to get some science education packaged as colorful, 3D, gameplay in a commercial MMO?
The diplomacy they added is a nice touch but it’s hardly more than a garnish on top of the existent exploration gerbil wheel. Again I’d reach out to people that could come up with both functional and useful systems rather than asking game designers to just come up with shit. Give them credit, show players where they can go to learn more, and make it a real experience.
Star Trek isn’t a setting for blood thirsty short attention span types. So why make a game for them? Why PvP other than as a bullet point?
But I do like having my NPC crew around to play with. I really appreciate some of the Episode content that’s come out. I’m amazed with the quality and creativity of many of the player generated missions too.
There’s definitely good here but there’s so much that’s missed the mark. Cryptic perhaps didn’t have time to do more than it did given the short time frame they were working with. Still…
I’m currently in the tutorial mission, although I created this character on Day 1. The only thing I have in the P menu is Small Hypo. No other abilities are displayed, despite having a phaser equipped. I’m missing the following icons that are assigned to new characters:
Beam Setting
Stun Beam Setting
Martial Arts
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Martial Arts Left Strikes
Martial Arts Right Strikes
Palm Strike
It’s definitely a bug, as others are experiencing the same issue.
Sorry , when I return to a game after an extended break I’ve usually completely forgotten the controls and hotkeys , thought maybe you were suffering the same .
No need to apologize, dude. I appreciate you taking the time to provide your input.
I got on tonight to see what changed, and apparently my character had so many merits that he got some kind of rare bridge officer that only 1% of the entire user base got. The remaining 99% of the user base is raging on the forums or so I was told.
Cool beans I say!
Other than that, dilithium is the new currency in town and the duty officer system is a lot of fun, sorta reminds me of EVE skill training, set it and forget it.
My main character has like 200k dilithium and all the others have around 90k , I am not sure if thats a lot or not.
Also you have to respec your character when you sign on, and I am not sure where to put points now.

Has the game become F2P yet or is that still coming up?
Umm January 17th I think. I posted it before a page back or so.
For those of you that have accidentally turned on FPS mode, V is the key to toggle between oldschool MMO hotkey mode and FPS mode.
Actually, it’s B by default.
EDIT: Also, they fixed the bug that was causing action icons to disappear from the action bar and become inaccessible.

Dang, things have changed. I need to start a new character just to learn how to play again. But different can be good. It’ll fill the time until they patch the resistance issue in Skyrim.
