:O
I doubt STO will be shut down any time soon.
If anything it will just drift along line Champions Online has.
I’m pretty sure the pre-release/beta STO thread is full of you saying this too. At the start of february the game will have been live for 2 years though.

If you can call a MMO with a low userbase and a rushed P2P to F2P transition ‘(a)live’.
Cryptic had a one in a million chance here. They could’ve had built something here that’d last for decades and would hook most any hardcore Trekkie nerd and half-geek, fueling the company for a very long time.
Yet, like SOE/SWG, they’ve massively let down the fans and blew it and now the game’s in bad shape, userbase wise.
They thought that they could rush and hurry it using the engine they had at hand and just retool the UI and gameplay a little, all the while trying to develop 3 MMOs of large scale and caliber at once with a tiny studio.
I called it at the pre-beta of STO as well because I inferred as much is happening from Jack Emmert’s interviews. From what he said it was practically obvious this is what they’re doing, and I was so very surprised so few were able to call it.
They set themselves up for failure and fail they did. It is sad that it ends so, but it is a reasonable conclusion. When the big wigs make big mistakes, the studio suffers greatly.
Just look at the big upheaval they had of late.
Former CEO John Needham left the company.
They were bought and taken over by Atari while under dire financial situation.
Bill Roper joined only to leave shortly thereafter.
Before that the STO Exec Producer, Craig Zinkievich, packed up and ran away.
It’s not looking very good for Cryptic/STO at all.
I reinstalled (again) to try the game one year later and I’m digging it. I don’t know why I like it so much more now, mainly because I can’t really tell what has changed, but I am. I like being the captain of my own starship and I’m definitely not finding the combat or on-foot missions as onerous as I originally had. This is really the only MMO I have ever played, but I think for now at least I’ll stick with it. If there is a Qt3 guild, I would like to try a round with you guys. My captain’s name is Aubrey, on the good ship U.S.S. Halsey.
I’ve been trying to find someone for an invite to the guild…no joy so far. I’m Captain Tresor on the USS Lackluster.
I’m having loads of fun with the game though. Just a few ranks away from being a Commander and I’m kind of feeling my way into PVP now, though I think I may put that off for when I roll a Klingon toon (which, as I understand it, is built around PVP entirely).
I just finished a looooong questline where I went back in time to find these creatures that were spawned by a comet and were trying to hijack an entire sector and take it off to their time…or something. I confess, it didn’t make a lot of sense, but it was a good time.
Not sure where all negativity about this game comes from. It’s got numerous flaws, but the combat and questing is pretty solid, and I’m looking forward to trying out pvp space combat.
You can put me (Captain Willoughby of the USS Thornycroft) in the sticking-with-it category. The ground combat feels pretty samey to me, but the space combat (even if I think it’s not as interesting as Pirates of the Burning Sea’s ship combat) is plenty neat, especially when I dove beneath a big foe, took down his shields on the way up from underneath, and put some torpedoes into him.
It sounds like the new Odyssey class (the Enterprise-F) finally becomes available later this month. Imagine it’ll be free to gold members and C-Store for the rest.
LOL no…
If anything it will be at least $25 on the C-store.
STO keeps pulling me back in from SWTOR. I feel compelled to manage my duty officer assignments and then I knock out some dailies. If I’m feeling inspired I might do some of the raid or fleet content via the ques. Sometimes I just cruise around and enjoy the scenery while waiting for DO assignments to pop and see what new assignments I run into out there. If I’ve got lots of time I dive into player made Foundry missions for fun (also pick up the daily mission for them too).

Has anyone noticed that they seem to have changed the way the quests worked. I remember when I first played, if another person was working on the same quest, it gave you the option to jump in and join them in progress. I haven’t seen that option appear yet.

I just started this yesterday for the first time ever and am having a pretty good time. Tons of combat for Star Trek, but the space combat is fun enough I don’t really mind. Not sure I’ll spend money on it, but what I’ve seen so far is promising. Interested in ranking up and getting a new ship, since I’m under the impression you get a new ship for free every full rank.
While I know there are probably much “better” ships out there, I am anxious to get a Constitution-class ship. I think I’ve seen some people with the model from the latest movie reboot, that would be cool to have.
Until you hit Vice Admiral, the level 50 cap. Then you gotta pay real money for a Tier-4 starship. Looking at $12-$20. Or, the free-to-play way is you accumulate a shitload of dilithium, which, based on my experience, would probably take about 2 weeks of hardcore PVE and PVP. Full-time.
I can invite to the Fleet. Duncan@balasarius. I’m not sure if I can invite while you’re offline, but your captain name alone doesn’t help. I need captainname@accountname. Remember it’s one shard.

I just jumped back in after a long break. I didn’t realize they basically put in a group finder for the five mans. I had given up on ever trying one but last night was able to get into my first run within a few minutes. I really like the direction they have gone with this.
Invites me please, my last 3 fleets have gone dead, lol.

Send an invite my way as well please. Horacio@byrdman57.
I don’t know if I’m actually going to stick with it, but:
Willoughby@onetruecod
What the hell. I may drop to run with an RP fleet eventually but right now I’m just knocking around doing missions and such. May as well do it with ya’ll.
