Try this one instead, I found it much better.
-edit- It’s still full of old information, but I mean what isn’t on those boards :)
There’s only one shard. We need captainname@accountname to invite you. For example, I’m duncan@balasarius. Anyone in the fleet who’s ranked member or above can send you an invite, even if you’re offline. So just post your info here and you’ll probably have an invite the next time you log in.
This looks way too cool to pass up. What I can’t figure is how the game is free to play because all my current impressions are that it’s really really easy to not spend money. LOTRO goes really far out of the way to give a ton of store stuff people can buy but STO looks more F2P friendly.
I think the theory is that players, once they get in to the game, won’t be able to resist picking up things in the store. Not because they have to own them to play or compete but because they’re cool toys or offer some convenience.
Basically, it’s the same reason successful drug dealers start out by giving free samples.
Ah, ok. Well I should be krayzkrok@krayzkrok then. My captain’s full name is Lucian “krayzkrok” Ortega (don’t laugh) but I presume I run around with a big “krayzkrok” above my head right now. I’d better come up with some ridiculous bio justification for this nickname, and fast.
I wouldn’t worry about it. Aside from one other guy and myself I don’t think Quarter-to-Fleet has any roleplayers and honestly I’m not even doing any RP these days in STO.

I do!
Also:
Can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting for that.
Sure, you don’t need to spend money, but, trust me, pretty soon you’ll be wanting to customize your character or get a nicer-looking starship, or a tier 5 starship, and the duty officer minigame will hook you, and you want more roster space, or you start buying packs. Or you need more inventory or bank space.
I’m close to $50 in a month so far. Didn’t need to, but I wanted to.
Today’s patch broke auto-fire on space weapons…
Sad
Personally, I have made it to level 36 without spending any money. If I should get to the point where I feel like I must pay in order to keep enjoying myself then I’ll probably just move on.
You can fix it pretty easily, but the fix has to be redone every zone which is super irritating. You’d think something like that would have never gone past playtesting (then again, people never seem to do that anymore these days anyway)

I did break that which I found annoying at first but now I can time my phaser and photon torpedo blasts and as a result I am killing enemies a lot faster. Pretty fun still.
I’m not sure why it doesn’t show up on the list (it doesn’t for me either), but if you press the down triangle at the top and search for Quarter, it will show up.
WTF Brian Rubin in my Star Trek!

:p
Hah, I can’t read that on my phone, whatsit say?
Hahahahahahahaha, awesome!
Ok, so I’m in and while I really have no idea what the hell I’m doing, I am liking it. First toon is an engineer in a cruiser, I seem to go for the tank role I guess. Plus the science ships are just so…ugly.
I’m smut@starfighter33, probably won’t be on until this evening…have another vice to feed today - train show!

I’m enjoying the space battles immensely. There’s a vague sense of Pirates of the Burning Sea deja vu here, with slightly clunky but mostly satisfying ground missions interspersed with excellent ship-to-ship combat. I’m at L5 now, starting to do exploration missions, and enjoying it. Not sure how things develop later on obviously, but so far the bridge / ship interiors seems be purely aesthetic. It would be a shame if this were the case, because obviously so many of the TV show stories were based on things happening largely within the ship or through that forward viewscreen. But maybe I’m jumping the gun here and this gets introduced at some point.
