My head canon Emperor

6 year old Anakin flew a starfighter into a capital ship and destroyed it.

Luke trained with Yoda for like 1 week. Then he fucked off to Bespin, came back to complete the training and Yoda was like, “nah you good”.

Rey is a great character. The story of Last Jedi was garbage. You can believe both to be true!

Well the time is rather… unspecified. How long did Luke spend with Yoda? Follow the movie timeline and we are talking a few days in ESB, at most. Between Empire and Jedi yeah maybe a few months, but we are never explicitly told. You simply accept it because you like the movie more. Time between TLJ and TFA? Unclear. But the issue isn’t training time, it is that you dislike the movie so you are it picking things that can be construed as equally illogical in other films.

Rey was shown using a staff. Her lifestyle clearly shows she has had to practice its use for years. It is not a lightsaber, but some skill transfer is reasonable. So she is not starting from zero.

Additionally she has spent years deconstructing, repairing, using, and salvaging craft. She definitely has spent time in and around the Falcon, knowing as much as what modifications Unkar Plutt had made. So her ability to fly the Falcon, which she has years of exposure to, is at least as much justified as Luke flying a combat spacecraft because he has flown a civilian T-16 in atmosphere.

Her orphaned salvager background is far more conducive to combat and survival skills than whiny Luke’s moisture farmer background.

I don’t agree, but this is fair. TLJ is flawed, but as an overarching story works for me. Space mortars, however…

I think calling Rey a Mary Sue but having no issue with Luke is not.

That’s all!

It had been mentioned (but not shown) that he was a good pilot. And he wasn’t the lead pilot in the assault. Not to mention the prequels showing (kinda stupidly granted) that he was a good pilot and could fly space ships even at a young age. That part ain’t brilliant but it’s at least a nod to things said and shown about his piloting abilities in ANH.

Edit to add: I like Rey as a character and the smallness of the universe really hurt her and cranked up her MSness for me in TLJ. At least with Luke I could head-canon any MS probs due to the length of his story and how much was off screen. Reys story is so rushed and the timeline of the new films so short I can’t head-canon it away as easily.

Perhaps I should watch TLJ again before RoS. I could see things differently.

I think you’re thinking of Vader (Anakin) here, not Luke, correct?

Lol! I was and then noticed after I posted. But then got distracted with different nerdiness! I suck at the Wars of Stars!

Luke didn’t fly a space ship until the Death Star battle as far as we know, but he did fly a Skyhopper and “bullseye womprats” in Beggar’s Canyon. Supposedly, the X-Wing is not much more complicated to fly.

He was keen to go the Imperial Academy to fly space ships though.

Luke: ‘best bush pilot in the outer rim’ according to Biggs. A boast, not factual declaration, but still. He was a pilot, however of strictly terrestrial craft like the T-16. Not a space fighter.

Anakin was also mostly confined to land based transportation such as podracers. However he is indicated to be multitalented at flight. But never explicitly called out.

Rey has flown the Falcon, but how extensively is unknown. She also has used other craft, such as her repulsorcraft.

I wonder if you fly through rings at the Imperial Academy? That’s still my favorite part of both the Xwing games I played (X-wing and X-wing Alliance). Doing a fast run through those rings is just the best.

Good pilot, yes, but the “couple of months” is not supported at all by ESB. ESB plays extremely loose with time as it is, but at the most you can stretch it to days/a week, given how the Han/Leia portion plays out.

This is bullshit. The Last Jedi begins exactly where The Force Awakens ends. She’s handing Luke the lightsaber.

I don’t think it’s ever made clear how far they had to go from the asteroid belt to Bespin without hyperdrive. As long as the plot needs it to be, I guess.

After a quick look into it ( I ain’t going too far down the rabbit hole) it was supposed to have taken a few months (up to 6) with some sort of stop by the Falcon at a different planet on the way to Bespin that was in the novelization of Empire but not shot film. Regardless Lukes training sure felt longer than a few days or even weeks. Based on storytelling queues anyway. And to me anyway.

I am honestly relieved knowing that ep 9 is going to suck.

Ok so.

I had tickets to the midnight screening here in NZ.

Fell asleep on the couch at 9:30pm and didn’t wake up till my wife woke me up at 12:30am…

I am so very old…

It IS catering to people of a certain age. 😉 I doubt the young ones get excited about IX after watching VII and/or VIII.

No he wasn’t. He had certain skill(luck) like the end of Episode IV, but he just didn’t become a badass Jedi out of the blue. They have an entire movie were Luke gets full of himself, foolishly runs off, gets his ass kicked and loses a hand for it. Rey has never, ever experienced any sort hardship or setback once. Now I’m seeing reviews that say she is basically a full blown Jedi God in this movie. None of it was ever earned with her. None of it.

This is what blows my mind. “We just purchased one of the biggest brands in the world. We are going to kick it off with a new trilogy of movies. Do you think we should outline the overall plot? Nah, let’s just write the first one and wing it…”

Someone did give them an outline - they just hated Lucas’s vision (that a mysterious alien race called The Whills was controlling the galaxy indirectly via the force - they were the ones that control midichlorian counts and created Anakin).
