BoxOfficeMojo and hundreds of articles for every movie would suggest otherwise since the suits don’t need articles or third party sites for that kind of information. You can certainly not care, but telling everyone else they shouldn’t is about on par with the fairy-tale that says TLJ was not only a failed movie but that it would lead to so many people not seeing this one… which of course that conversation has shifted slightly to opening weekends don’t matter because well the other has no standing anymore. People are indeed seeing this movie.
I don’t know if “failed movie” is the right way to classify The Last Jedi, but it’s very obvious with The Rise of Skywalker that there was some hardcore walking back of the themes Rian Johnson presented in his movie.

I’d forgotten about the dumb clothes iron joke until someone reminded me last night.
I know right? What happened to the Jedi kid and his broom?

Stayed a slave and was punished harshly for the escape of those horse things.
He probably got in a solid whack on someone with that broom first though.

Actually I thought that joke was rather clever. It was an homage to an old Star Wars parody called Hardware Wars. I laughed hard when I saw it. Of course without that connection, Im sure it falls flat.
I’ve never heard about Hardware Wars, but I totally loved that joke. If it was done in isolation, it would have felt like a Mel Brooks gag, but it was the transition to the everyday pragmatic parts of the ship’s operation, which we understand Finn had some experience with.
Ooops. Looks like it fizzled over the weekend. Only $175 million.
I watched the movie this morning and just feel kind of exhausted. It was okay. Despite the tempered expectations from this thread, I guess I just didn’t feel any emotions during this movie, unlike the last one where I got really emotionally involved with what was happening.
On the other hand, it wasn’t a disaster either. A lot of stuff happened. So much stuff that I’ve promptly forgotten most of it. The scene from the earliest trailer was probably my favorite scene in the movie. Even though I knew what was going to happen, having seen that trailer, I was still really into it. It was the only time in the movie where I felt real anticipation and excitement.
I love that we live in an age when a $175 million opening weekend is a fizzle.

Why Disney must die and actively made our world worse.
The intersection between box office and quality is in my experience essentially random.

What’s funny is how it’s all based on the way it’s phrased right. For example…

But even he says:
We’re still dealing with a movie that opened with $175.5 million and was only slightly less leggy over the weekend than its relative predecessors.
There is nothing fizzled about 175 mil
If TLJ and Rise were much better than they were, this movie would have made more money than TFA, just like Endgame made more money than any other MCU movie by huge margin.
As it is, it will have a hard time making even half of what TFA made.
It’s embarassing what Iger and Kennedy did with Star Wars.
I don’t think your conclusion necessarily follows from the anecdotal evidence of Avengers: Endgame. Even people who love Endgame (like me) admit that it’s not as good as some of the other Marvel movies. What it had was an enormous amount of hype and a decade of buildup.
By contrast, The Force Awakens had both a decade of buildup (from the last preceding Star Wars movie) and over three decades of buildup (from the release of Return of the Jedi). The level of hype for that movie was unprecedented, and it remains the highest-grossing domestic release of all time (yes, over Avengers: Endgame). It would be difficult for any subsequent movie to match the excitement of the first new Star Wars sequel in thirty years.
I predict that Rise of Skywalker will easily make half of what The Force Awakens made, and will most likely beat The Last Jedi. But that’s just a guess.
Just saw it. This was my exact feeling, too. VIII just hangs out there doing, at best, nothing and, at worse, having set things back. Obviously getting in the last word let Abrams make that feeling even more true, but this trilogy feels like more of a duology.
Definitely my favorite of the Disney trilogy. Only thing I really hated were the stupid deathstar star destroyers. Minor annoyance at the gratuitous horses (“jam their speeders”, huh?) and the archery.
Force Awakens did almost $250 million…Jedi did $220 million and the tracking for Rises was over $200. Also its the last official movie in core saga films one of the biggest IP’s ever in movies. So yea to end up at 175 I call that “fizzling” in comparison. Add in Solo and the pattern is clear. The question now becomes what does Disney do about it going forward because I can guarantee the top brass isn’t satisfied with the IP’s recent performance.
