This isn’t the spoiler thread.

Wow, that Star Wars Christmas special was really something. That pitch meeting was very informative. I had no idea the Christmas special was a variety show. Only in the 70s could you have someone come up with that idea, and then someone else approve it.

It does make me a bit nostalgic for the days when Star Wars was not a holy writ and Not To Be Fucked With In Any Way. You want to do a goofy-ass musical number with Bea Arthur? Hell why not?

Yeah, I agree. I don’t care that they did it. I don’t like it because a Mama’s Family skit on the Carol Burnett Show with Korman is funny. None of that was funny.

That holiday special one is art.

The holiday special was kind of prescient with all the screens… and all the stuff people watch on screens…

Now I can’t stop wondering what other bits of common knowledge you’re missing.

I object that this is common knowledge! Strenuous objection!

All I know is that show predates me, and rumor had it it would never see the light of day again.

The full thing is available on YouTube.

The socialism is strong with this one…

I always liked how the Millennium Falcon had a movie cockpit and a separate TV special cockpit.

I just got back from seeing it; I thought it was pretty good. I would comfortably put it in the top five.

Well all of the predictions that it would crash and burn in week two were off the mark. It is tracking at numbers very similar to The Last Jedi. No major drop off and fan ratings on RT are still at 86%. Apparently the hate reflected here is not representative of the general population.
I still havent seen it as I am recuperating from surgery but I will see it this Friday. I have managed to avoid any major spoilers surprisingly and I look forward to seeing how they wrap this saga up.

I personally was not expecting much of a drop off just based on my personal experience with my family. Family is in town, we want to go see a movie together, and we get to the multiplex, and out of 30 screens, 22 of them are being used for Star Wars. There’s very little choice if you want to see something else. So a lot of people will end up seeing this.

One thing I had never picked up on until recently was this idea of watching Star Wars being a holiday tradition in many families. I had always thought it was dumb to keep releasing the movies over the holiday season but I guess this is a thing? I was surprised when a friend of mine mentioned it but it sort of makes sense.

I could have sworn that the prequels were NOT holiday releases though - I remember sweating my ass off waiting in line for Attack of the Clones.

Until this latest trilogy Star Wars movies were all Late spring or summer releases, Attack of the Clones was a May 15th release

And it’s not a Christmas tradition.

Its a birthday one for me. So we always go the 26th.

It is since Titanic showed that a holiday release can be a viable thing. See also LotR, Avatar and such.

They don’t have a big Star Wars movie slotted for next year though, and with Avatar* 2, 3, 4 & 5 lined up for the respective holiday seasons of 2021 through 2024, it’ll likely be a while until there’s another Star Wars-y Christmas.

* This now also being a Disney thing due to the acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
