Pee-wee Herman? Wikipedia doesn’t list a Paul Reuben. (Pee-wee’s Playhouse was awesome! Such a tragedy what happened!)

He used a pseudonym for that movie if I recall. Click to zoom in on the DVD back to see that he is credited years later.
Yeah, Flight of the Navigator was good. Alienating and sad though…

Disney has several studios under their umbrella, and they use those other studios to take more risks. It is not true to suggest all Disney movies are empty though.
I guess Black Panther inverts concepts of elitism in a novel way. (Not their idea, but everyone says it was handled okay.) Still, it’s not the most “brainy” movie.

If you’re talking cultural, they put in a lot of effort into Moana as well. I mean Disney produced content is not empty calories just because some Star Wars fans remained pretty pissed off about the last movie. There is lot to criticize for the last movie and Disney itself but it’s lemmings over a cliff to think a giant brush can be used to paint them that way just because of that.
It’s a good movie, but that’s not really what I mean, no. (Oops, I thought you meant Lilo & Stitch. I haven’t seen Moana.)

Yeah I don’t know about Lilo and Stich but with Moana, the creators visited islands, spoke to elders, focused on some of the language, addressed the ocean as a person, and all that came from some effort to do the culture right. Now having said that, it’s not a documentary, they had some controversy with it still Maui’s look, but I’d say Disney is doing what they do pretty well these days. But for the deep think, challenge what you know or what you think you know and mind twist stuff, they’d used different labels, studios, in the past other than Disney for that stuff. j
It’s hard to keep track of all the studios they had, sold, purchased… the mouse is quite complicated but yeah I get SW fans are upset, but the Disney brand is not the only brand Disney releases content under.
I remember Zootopia had a scene where the bunny-cop protagonist gives a press conference where she says that all predatory animals are biologically predisposed toward violence and are thus by implication all dangerous. This understandably upset her fox sidekick who walked away in disgust for reasons the bunny did not understand. It impressed me that Disney put that scene in a movie aimed at children since many adults don’t quite grasp why such statements are problematic. Whether that scene qualifies as brainy is up for debate, but it was certainly operating on a deeper level than most blockbusters.
I thought Inside Out was/is a Disney movie. Excellent entertainment.
Good choice! Loved that film. It’s emotionally complex, although that can be different than challenging intellectually depending on one’s point of view.
Yeah I was a bit hesitant to name it, given the criteria. The film didn’t give me much to “puzzle out” to be fair, although I did get some satisfaction from predicting the sacrifice of the elephant, before my partner who was watching it. That blindsides her, and her reaction is something movie makers aim for.
I know it’s not Disney, but the last films to make me scratch my head were Shutter Island and Inception.
Getting back on topic, Ep 9 of SW didn’t make me scratch my head, at all.
But I don’t think it was meant to.

I know i am late, we saw it on the 27th. It was a JJ Abrams movie: entertaining, enjoyable, but nothing memorable and little depth.
They’re basically printing money at will, at this point.

Everyone always thinks the king will never fall, but then it does. They’ll make a mistake or someone will get ahead of them or something will knock the crown off… it’s just not now and not with Star Wars, not at the moment anyway.
“Not even God himself could sink this ship!”
Just like Apple since 1997, I’m sure Disney will fail one of these days. The nice thing about the “what goes up must come down” prediction is that it can’t even be disproven; there’s always the certainty that the company will fail, but maybe next year.

It took over a hundred and 28 years for Sears. Although they went down in rank before they basically just up and started failing. I am guessing even just 20-30 years ago some people would’ve found that unthinkable.
I happened to check showtimes at my local theater and noticed last night was the last night this was going to be shown, so I hied myself down to the theater and finally got to see the movie. Now I get to have an opinion, yay! And … I don’t really have one. It seemed fun enough but I doubt it will stick with me too long. Certainly had the whole spectacle thing going, everything was big and loud and explodey, so that was cool. Wonder what they’ll do next.
