Star Wars Episode VII - Wretched Hive of Rumor and Spoilers Thread

It’s been ages, but wasn’t she always too busy with politics as a Senator and later Head of State of the New Republic to devote the required time to her training in the EU?

This is like 90% of what being a Star Wars fan is.

Keep in mind that right after take-off, they make a point of having Mary Sue tell Finn to raise the deflector shields. Given that the deflectors are able to ward off canon fire until they run out of power, I think a little sand and water would be no big deal for them.

Wait, are we using the term Mary Sue sarcastically these days or has that definition changed?

If this thread has been anything but trolling for the last 30 pages, I’ve lost faith in us all.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

Abrams admits Leia/Chewbacca scene after Hans death a mistake! Admits Chewbacca should have just been kept out of the shot to avoid the controversy.

Red Letter Media did a quick rundown of The Force Awakens after seeing it in the theater. They liked it, which is no surprise considering RLM like the JJ Abrams Trek movies and said he was probably the perfect director for the Star Wars franchise rebirth.

They’re teasing a full review.

On the one hand, I really like the RLM reviews of the prequel trilogy. Yes, they can be nitpicky and overlong, but the essential points they made about the movies were well-stated, backed by behind-the-scenes events, and still hold up to this day as good script/film lessons for anyone interested in movies above a consumer level.

On the other hand, they’ve become pat shutdowns of any discussion about the movies. People are very fond of just plopping a link to the RLM reviews into conversations about the movies instead of actually talking about anything or making their own points. They’ve become like TVTropes in that people use them as the end-all-be-all authority on criticism, which is infuriating to me.

So, here’s to hoping the RLM review is substantive and interesting.

I absolutely loved this video:

That was awesome, thanks for linking it LMN8R.

That video explains pretty much everything about why I felt The Force Awakens was a great movie.

Really, really great video! Thanks for sharing.

Too bad that J.J. A. isn’t nearly so eloquent…

Worth sitting through that for the example of how Kylo Ren wasn’t trying very hard to kill Rey. That makes much more sense.

I didn’t like the video as much as you guys, but I probably liked it more than almost any video I’ve ever seen that featured burp jokes. I’m not negative on the movie though, and do appreciate a bunch of things the video highlights, like the use of physical effects.

But there are a bunch of things I disagree with (or I think are wrong):

  • Poe’s first line in his confrontation with Kylo Ren (“who speaks first?”) kinda made me cringe, so I was surprised to see it highlighted as something positive – seemed too artificial and made me think the movie was trying to hard to be Whedon-ish. Fortunately it wasn’t representative of the rest of the movie.

  • Really disagree with that Poe and Finn had good chemistry. Their interactions seemed really forced and artificial as well, despite Isaacs being perhaps the best actor in the movie. I thought the chemistry between Finn & Rey was great, however, as was was the relationship between them and Han/Chewie.

  • Uh, Kylo Ren wasn’t “punching himself in the wound to keep his force abilities up and intestines in” - where the hell did that come from? He seemed to just be deliberately causing himself pain - presumably to trigger more dark side emotions and focus or power.

  • I think the commentator is also missing the point of the “traitor!!” line Kylo uses when confronting Finn. It’s not a personal reaction of Kylo to Finn. He ignores the fact that the other stormtrooper used the exact same “traitor!” line before the lightsaber fight, which can’t be a coincidence – the New Order is essentially a cult, and I think both instances highlight the cultish nature of the New Order, and cults can’t tolerate people leaving them.

  • Did find the suggestion that Kylo/Rey might journey in different directions in this trilogy to be potentially interesting, but really optimistic, as I don’t think that’s going to happen and it’s a bit of a stretch to conclude that it’s foreshadowed based upon the fact that Rey gets angry at the end. Having Rey go dark is just not a journey Disney would take with the franchise, although presumably she’ll have some life lessons and possible temptations. And Ren had his battle between sides already, in this movie, and overcame it, so now he’s free to essentially be the Darth Vader figure of this series. Ren is clearly trying to subdue Rey in their final battle, but presumably that’s because he has felt her “awakening” as discussed with this master, and/or he may know who she really is.

  • I do think the commentator’s observation on relationships, and the fact that no characters have “normal” loving relationships, and almost everyone seems abandoned by someone else in some fashion, to be intriguing - and think that it’s unlikely to be unintentional and provides some interesting thematic depth, even if the extent of its relevance may not reach beyond this movie. But it would be cool if it did.

That part of the video was also really sweet and touching.

Meet young Han Solo.

Please dont take my counter points as a personal attack, they are not meant to be. The intent is to explain why many people feel differently. Your opinions are entirely valid, from your point of view. In the end watching a movie is a personal experience and everyone takes different things away from that.

This is not “wrong” its merely your opinion. The fact that the scene didnt play well for you, doesnt make it wrong or bad. It clearly played well for a lot of people. I found it amusing and have actually used that bit in those moments of awkward silence you sometime hit during real life conversations.

Once again, not wrong just personal opinion. Quite a few people found the relationship so engaging that they have actually petitioned for Poe and Finn to be written as a gay couple.

  • Uh, Kylo Ren wasn’t “punching himself in the wound to keep his force abilities up and intestines in” - where the hell did that come from? He seemed to just be deliberately causing himself pain - presumably to trigger more dark side emotions and focus or power.

I get why you disagree with this because its apparent that the attempt at humor by the narrator went right over your head.

Kylo is a petulant man-child who is prone to over the top bursts of anger whenever things do not go his way. One of his troops betrayed him and his cause and you think he does not take that personally? I cant see him taking it any other way. Also, two people calling a traitor, “traitor” isnt coincidence, its common sense usage of language. Your point about the cultish nature of the First Order only amplifies the fact that both took Finn’s betrayal very personally.

I agree, Its very doubtful that Disney will take Rey down the path to the dark side. Im sure she will struggle with it, as have pretty much every Jedi in the Star Wars series has but I just dont see them turning her full on dark side. Also as far as Ren fighting to subdue Rey, Snoke gave him a direct order to bring Rey to him after she resisted his attempts to force interrogate her. His mission at that time was to subdue and bring Rey to Snoke. He was absolutely fighting to subdue and not kill her.

This part was obviously speculative by the narrator but the observations were quite interesting. If the writers pick up on this common relationship issue, they may actually flip the script from the prequels. Where Anakin’s love both for his mother and Padme helped push him to the dark side, it just may be that love will be the thing to restore the light side to power and rebalance the force.

Anyway, as I said Im not trying to prove you wrong, just trying to show why some people feel differently about the points you made.

The suggested videos for this are bizarre. They’re all full length bollywood and nollywood films of terrible, terrible quality, mostly soft-core porn or hindi style kung fu.
