Same here. Ben’s version of events versus Luke’s version.

In Luke’s version he says it was a moment of weakness, a “passing shadow”, but he does definitely admit attacking his nephew.

Yeah, I find that all very relatable and well-drawn. (Except maybe the part where he had to have his moral quandary there, in the tent, with his lightsaber in hand. But that’s how film works.)

How did Luke try to kill his father? I must’ve watched very different movies.

Oh man, I’m sure bringing this thread back is going to lead to positive outcomes all around, and that the people who have a different opinion of yours (whatever it might be), are just one explanation away from totally changing and going “you ARE right, TLJ rules / sucks!”.

Also, I never imagined that all it would take to justify a force user coming back would be “cause”, at least Ahsoka, they pulled a Jedi Back to the Future time travel temple out of their hat.

Fortunately, we’re 5 years closer to the younglings just thinking of all of this as “old shit”, and what matters is whatever is going on now in Star Wars, assuming both SW and all of us survive.

With enough discussion everyone will change their minds. Isn’t that how the internet works?

I still don’t mind it. The movie is so good, just the thread being refreshed makes me feel good. Thank you everyone!

“JJ isn’t an amazing auteur by any means, but at least he didn’t completely betray characters we’ve loved for 45 years.”

Isn’t Han Solo in JJ’s world an old washed up divorced deadbeat dad who lost his most cherished possession (the Falcon). And his only offspring is a murderous pyscho?

I for one hope all of the sequels to my favorite childhood movies are boring and pointless, but at least they didn’t betray the image of the character I had in my head.

Just a little father son bonding at the end of Return of the Jedi?

Cutting off your father’s hand is to Luke as to playing a round of catch with dad is to us.

That’s pretty much where it seemed he was going, he was a scumbag with a heart of gold. Certainly not the best outcome for Han, but a believable one? Of course.

Yeah, he did. All of our “heroes”, are failures, in the ways that mattered to them in the original trilogy.

This is not a good comparison for TLJ. Luke could’ve killed Vader, tried to avoid the confrontation, repeatedly had the fate of his friends and sister used as bait, and in the end disarmed his immediate opponent rather than choosing to be lethal and then disarmed himself in the face of a greater threat.

Yes, repeatedly screaming and slashing at your father that fell over is a swordsman’s most special move.

It is almost like this character went out of his mind with rage and almost did something very stupid, like kill a relative

Gosh, I’ll bet he’ll never make a rash decision like that again.

He definitely did succumb to the dark side briefly there-- but that was in combat, not slaughtering your teenage nephew as he sleeps.

Maybe he stubbed his toe, and was angry entering the yurt?

With a force user as powerful as palpatine right there in the room applying pressure on a novice jedi, who nevertheless managed to maintain control.

And all you get out of this is that you’re pissed that Rian Johnson made Luke do something you didn’t think he’d do? When did Luke become some super-Jedi Master, immune to the failings of normal human-folk? He had a moment of weakness, and has regretted it ever since.

Almost like when he went crazy and cut off his dad’s hand.

It would be like Gandalf standing over the hobbits … “I have to kill them”. Would it be seen as edgy and myth making?!? wtf?!? stfu Rian Johnson.
