Have fun guys! Figure there is no shot for me since I was in an earlier weekend but glad more folks are getting in…

Still haven’t received an invite. That’s what I get for sharing my trade secrets on the front page a while back

So if my stupid friends are making me buy this stupid game so I can stupid play it with them is there any down side to just pre-ordering it from Origin? Do I need to install Origin to play it if I buy a boxed copy? Because if that’s the case I may as well just get it direct from them and not worry about shipments or getting a code in time or whatever.

I got an invite for this week. Skyrim conflict, but I’ll probably at least try it out.

That’d be stupid.

I don’t know how Origin is going to interact with boxed copies (though I’m assuming that’s how early access players will install the game), but the only downside to doing it through Origin is if you’re wanting the CE because you don’t get any of the physical goodies.

Also: hate rising. May need to join Threevil right off the bat.

It’s been commented on before, but a community rep for Bioware posted this yesterday:

Hi everyone! We’ve seen some continuing confusion over this topic. Some of you have quoted text that appears on the Pre-Order Page that indicates you’ll need to install Origin software to download the game. We are working to update the information on that page: you will not be required to install the Origin software in order to download, patch, or play the game (even during Early Game Access). You’ll do that through our own site and launcher.

If i got in to the beta, i would think downloading a 20gb+ client for a 2 day beta would be very hard to stomach.

And yet no. 83% done of the total, all at a blazing ~185kps courtesy of my medieval connection.

Is Origin the only place to buy the game digitally? If I don’t want to install EA’s bullshit software, is my only other choice to buy a physical boxed copy?

i’ll wager the boxed copy will still install origin for patch management and marketing purposes.

So how does this early play code work? I just preordered from Amazon and got instructions on how to get my code…but I am not getting the game until release day…so how do I benefit from early play? I am so confused.

Neither will use Origin the program, even if you order via Origin the web store. All downloading - either for digital distribution or early access for a boxed user without the box yet - is via the launcher. If you read the dev tracker on the official forums they’ve been quite explicit.

DL via the launcher; early access makes the box basically redundant unless you want to save the bandwidth and skip it.

Since EA wholly owns Bioware, I have difficulty believing that EA would allow a golden opportunity to get their new storefront app on a lot of potential customers’ pcs to pass by. It really doesn’t matter what the Bioware devs say right now. All it takes is EA deciding that it is a good idea to tie SWTOR to Origin, and whatever the Bioware devs said in the past will be history. Bioware is a vassal now.

Glad I took the time to reply then.

My SW:TOR early access preorder is very plainly shown under my games list in Origin, so I have to assume the early access stuff will be done through Origin.

Not quite true. The code you get for pre-ordering lets you into early access, but on launch day you’ll need to put in a separate code from the retail box to continue playing. I’m not sure that this applies to purchases from Origin, though.

The only way anybody needs the Origin client is, per Karnisov, if John Riccitiello leaps from behind the bushes on or after launch day and makes hilarious liars out of Bioware’s communications people. Everyone’s free to believe that, it just strikes me as a little pessimistic.

Just got an invite too, forgot i even signed up, although no chance in hell i will be playing with Skyrim waiting to be unlocked tommorow!

So if I want to order a digital copy of the game but not install Origin, how does that work? Is there a web-based storefront or something?

Origin does have a web based storefront in addition to the client. I would guess it’ll work similar to WoW. After you’ve purchased it and the client has been made available, you just log into the SW:TOR web site (which, as I understand it, uses the same credentials as your Origin account), and download an installer.
