Its a percentage chance, although no-one seems to know how high a percentage. As Ydejin noted, its a bit expensive, but yes, its your crafts that you should reverse engineer to get a better schematic for them.
It happens about 1 in 5-10 times I reverse engineer that I get a better version so it takes patience.
And thanks again Ydejin! Guess I need to check out the preferences a bit more closely!

Take green items that you’ve already got a receipe for and are crafting. Instead of selling them or using them deconstruct them. If you’re lucky (odds estimated about 10%) you’ll get a blue recipe unlocked. Keep going until you do.
Now take the blue recipe and start crafting items. Deconstruct the items instead of using them. You should have about a one in 10% chance of getting a purple recipe.
I don’t have the actual details, so this should be taken with a grain of salt:
For Cybertech (which is primarily about MODS and some earrings and droid parts so far) - you can reverse engineer every mod you make - but it seems you only get “Might MOD” recipes when doing it with Might MODs - and so on for the rest of them. Once you get a Might 2 from Might 1 - you need to reverse engineer Might 2 to get Might 3 and so on.
At least, that’s been my experience so far. So, it takes quite some effort to get better stuff than what’s available from vendors and questing. But it would be logical to assume that you eventually end up with superior stuff.
I guess the other crafting skills work the same way.
I can only speculate as to what the end-game is like, though. I’m hoping crafting will be viable as an alternative to raiding/PvP stuff - but that’s probably too much to hope for.

Bit of a warning, sometimes the tooltip for your companion will get bugged. If you aren’t getting a tooltip for them to show up, you may need to toggle the UI (ctrl+u twice). I think it may have something to do with sending them off to do stuff and them coming back and the UI not quite knowing about it.
I’ve certainly seen reputation gains with Khem, regardless of him actually being there. And the droid seems indifferent to gifts as well. Has anyone managed to raise affection with him?
Regarding crafting, this is a good place to start:

The link to the reverse engineering thread is particularly good.
The whole orange gear set up is designed for cosmetics with stats totally determined by mods. Find a piece you like the look of and mod it so it stays up to date. The catch is that if all your gear is orange then there’s about 60 slots to fill - very expensive and time consuming to deal with as you level. You can cheat a little by getting orange gear with commendations as they come loaded out with level appropriate mods. You can then remove those mods and put them in the item you like the look of. But often far easier to craft level appropriate purples which won’t have many slots (if any) but will have good base stats.
C.
And then deconstruct the purple to get an even better purple. It is insanely expensive to do this, but I got lucky and on my first try unlocked a new recipe by deconstructing a purple I had just crafted.

Really! I didn’t know this. I’m going to have to try that – although getting those high end gems/underworld metals/etc is going to be insanely difficult. I’m not sure it makes sense doing it except at end game.

Yeah, the Cantina in the basement with the crewskills apparently isn’t private enough. Either get to another cantina, or wait for your ship :-)
If you had C2 out, I’d say you were aboard ship - where everyone gets points - or turning in a quest, which often post-dates points you got earlier.
Regarding the length of slicing missions, the final level 50 lockbox missions, which come up at 350+ skill, take 30-35 minutes and yield ~1-8000 cash per lockbox, although the other crit rewareds are often purple missions/augments/etc. The L50 augment missions take up to 1h15m. AFAIK companion affection levels can also shorten mission time, to what extent I don’t know.
*EDIT: I assume they’re the final lockbox missions. No new ones are coming out and these ones are going from orange to yellow to green.

You can get it in the Nar Shaddaa Promenade cantina as well if you have Social II.
Damn you, OCD!
I thought I was finally finished on Taris last night and was heading back to my ship only to meet the governor who started a new series of “bonus” Taris quests. Of course, given my completionist tendencies, I had to do them. Fortunately the quests were pretty cool, there were some nice rewards (socketed shirt and pants) and I even met a few other people doing them so we formed up a party of four and ran the full series together over about three hours. One thing is certain, though: I have killed my last rakghoul. The storyline on Taris was sort of interesting because of all the call-backs to KOTOR1, but I imagine it would feel like a real slog to anyone who didn’t play that game.
So now I’m only a few bubbles of experience shy of level 25 and I haven’t even started Nar Shaddaa (level 20-24 zone) yet. Since I’ve already out-leveled the zone, I’m debating only doing my class story on Nar Shaddaa and skipping all the side quests. Would I be missing anything important (cool stories, fun quests, good loot) by doing this?
In the beta you could walk into the Senate chamber and that would trigger it.
The first time, I couldn’t talk to mine until I got my ship. Though lately a cantina has worked just fine.
Aside from the fact that I like the world, I can’t remember any loot or quests that stand out, though that could vary by class. Take a look at the comm vendor, and see if there is anything you like. If not, move on to Tatooine which is one of my favorite worlds in game.
That said the level curve becomes a lot steeper once you hit 30 or so, maybe 35. Any steam you build beforehand will help you with the climb.
Question about socketed equipment: are they all essentially the same and differ only in looks? Are the stats on the item 100% based on the mods I choose to install? Is there any difference between using a socketed piece of gear I got at level 10 versus one I got at level 20 if they both have the same mods installed?
Welp, I had my first genuinely bad experience with TOR last night.
Trying to get through a minor instanced area on Balmorra (the Settling Debts quest). Can’t find a healer, as usual. I figure screw it: I’m fully tank specced and geared, the quest is green, we have 3 dudes (me the Juggernaut, a Marauder, and an Assassin), and I have a healing companion (2V-R8).
What a total disaster. For one, 2V’s healing is practically nonexistent. A HoT that ticks for 26 healing every few seconds matters fuck all to my health pool of 5k or whatever it is. Our Assassin is trying to CC some dudes, but he constantly cc’s the Strong enemies instead of the Elites and Dipshit the Marauder insists on hitting Smash as soon as she leaps in and breaks it anyway.
Worst of all, my droid is constantly – and I mean constantly, like every 3-5 seconds – playing his “Excellent! I was just wondering what I could do to please you” voiceover. I am planning on literally never summoning him again. I still hear that godawful passive-aggressive nancypants echoing around my head 13 hours later and it is making me something something.
And then of course Moron the Assassin starts up the convo that is the endcap of the mission before Dipshit and myself have passed the first stage, so we can’t finish the mission without resetting the instance. This despite me constantly asking “hey, can we kill that last defensive emplacement? I’m still on that leg of the quest.” Because fucking nobody ever reads chat because LIGHTSABORZ HOOOOOOOO.
Solution: Log off and play my Bounty Hunter for a while, because her mechanics rule and also missiles. And then ragequit an hour later because basically the exact same thing happens trying to get through Factory Recall on Hutta.
I may take tonight off from TOR.
