I keep upgrading my weapon with mods, generally, but I like crafting my own armor just to keep from looking exactly the same for 40 levels. That’s really it; money hasn’t been an issue at all, keeping everything up-to-date.

I don’t want x-server LFG. What I want is DDO LFG. Put up the mission you are looking for and go about your business when enough people whisper/join you all head to the heroic/flash point. I’ve basically stopped doing FPs because I don’t want to stand around in the imperial fleet all day.
Orange gear is the most ridiculously overcomplicated attempt I’ve seen at an appearance tab…
This was, in a very roundabout way, sort of my point. I thought maybe I was missing something, but apparently I’m not. It all seems a bit ridiculous and weirdly thought out to me…
I guess my other point would be, do you guys realize how much some of these mats you’re using are worth? For example, titanium I’ve been selling for 2k each, that’s 20k for a stack of ten. I just put a stack of 43 up on the AH and it sold in under 5 mintues… So that’s 86k right there.
My main is actually still Cy/scavag/underworld. I can and do make my own mods once in a while if I can’t find any, I’m just hesitant to keep burning through mats to level the skill up any farther, because it’s such a huge outlay of cost mats wise. If at some point money becomes trivial, then sure, it’s fun from a certain standpoint to be able to make stuffs.
This is the best game since World of Warcraft. I might even pay for an additional month after my first month runs out.

If you want to know why, it’s as simple as there not being a market out there willing to pay even a fraction of the cost that the Cybertech crafter has to put out to produce such items. Here’s what it takes to make a Purple Armoring:
-
Produce ~5 greens of that type to get the blue schematic. This blows through about ~2,000-4,000 credits depending on item level.
-
Produce ~5 blues to get the purple schematic. This is tough because the Blues take 3 times as long to make as greens and normally require about 4 Underworld Metals that are generally worth about 800-1k apiece. So this is about 20,000-30,000 credits out of pocket to get the purple schematic.
-
Produce the purple item. These take 30 minutes to an hour to craft and require rare Underworld Metals. The mats for making a purple item are usually worth 5-10k.
So a single purple armoring schematic costs the crafter about 30,000 credits to research and the item itself costs about 7500 credits to make. This is pretty sad in a market where I cannot actually find buyers who would even pay me the damn 7500 credits that the mats alone are worth. If I can’t even turn a profit on the final item, why would I spend the hours and 30k in upfront costs to be able to make the damn thing to begin with. Even if I found someone willing to pay a 33% markup and give me 10k apiece, I’d have to somehow sell a dozen of the things just to break even. It’s completely idiotic.
Honestly I think Bioware went full retard because they made it so that there’s a better version of every item every other level and they made all of these items readily accessible through commendations. No one in my guild even wants stuff I’m making because they already are getting what they need just through the commendations vendors. I mean, they’d take it if I was giving it away for free but it’s not even worth it for me to make the items for them for just the cost of the material.
Agreed Reldan. The pace at which gear outdates while leveling is insane. I’m never willing to spend more than 4k on an item because of this, and even then only to fill the worst gear holes.
I craft a new blue quality hilt every 4 levels, and that’s about all I get out of even my own craft skill. You’d have to spend a ridiculous amount of time and resources to keep even one character in relevant blue quality gear while leveling. Purples…forget it…

Hmm, I’ve got over 20 purple recipes on my Artificer.
I do agree that for the higher end ones (level 30+) I would be reluctant to sell them for much under 10,000 credits each – due to the time and expense of making them.
You’re wasting your time and money, but play how you like. Well, beyond the waste of spending it in an mmo ;)

I’ve put up level 29 Blue Armorings onto the GTN at a 40% of the cost of the materials, and even at that discount, they usually take 48-72 hours to find a buyer. I can put the mats up at the going price and they’ll sell within 12 hours.

Overall I’ve got a positive cash flow on money. After level 30 the credits just roll in from adventuring. It does take a lot of time to be sure, but will sometimes just leave the game running while I work on something else and my crew members churn out items every 7 minutes or so (3 crew members running 20+ minute blue items offset by 7-minutes each).
One of our Guild Slicers gave me a 70,000 credit investment to really help my crafting take off and I’m always happy to craft for Guild Members.
I’ve had some purples sell within 6 minutes of putting them up for auction – which means I should probably boost my prices. OTOH some stuff takes a lot longer. One key is to put stuff up on the weekends, when more people are playing.
I think the problem with Blue Armoring is that you can get it for Commendations.

Have folks made money crafting while leveling in other mmos? I’ve always viewed crafting as a time/money sink that helps you while leveling but the real rewards comes at max level.
For the life of me, I can’t figure out crafting in this game. I have 3 gathering specialties which nets me cash and all, but I’d like to do some crafting. But I literally have no idea what to do to get that started…

Press N. You send away your companion who does the crafting for you on a timer.
Wow, I feel a bit ashamed I couldn’t figure that one out…

You get them for commendations, and as quest rewards, and they refresh to a newer better version every other level. Color crystals last for about 15 levels, so people are willing to pay for them because they know they aren’t going to be getting a better one in the meantime.
Anyways, I wasn’t speaking about crafting as a whole. I was making a very specific point about how the design around Cybertech’s Armoring and Mods is stupid, and as a result it’s rare to see someone bother selling blues and you never see anyone bother trying to sell purples.
I went through the whole mess so I could make myself a purple Ear item at level 30. The green level 35 item is actually better and literally costs about 100x less. It’s no wonder no one wants to pay the premium for such things.

I just don’t bother until I max it, now I’m selling lvl 49 purple earpiece for 40k.
purple ship upgrades are fairly popular too, you can equip those around lvl 40+, missile launcher are useless though, haven’t got through a space mission where I need more than 50 missiles.
Another thing that bugs me a bit about the crafting. They have a 3rd tree, that you ultimately really need, in some obscure proff, that has some really crap filler missions. Underworld is one of the worst for this. Many times there won’t even be a mission for metals, only companion gifts, which is a huge waste of money as you can buy them for 1/4 of the price from a vendor.
If they would consolidate what you needed to craft into 2 skills, and you could use the 3rd one as just your farm skill, the entire system would be a lot better imo.
Exact same complaint with Diplomacy, to the point when I wasn’t running any companion gift missions my diplomacy was a good 60 points behind the others. Diplomacy being 20 while the other 2 where above 80.
