I’m not saying you’re an idiot for wanting to do something with crafting at low level; I’m saying that SWTOR crafting is 99% useless, and is only even slightly useful at 49-50.

I would have said it was 95% useless, but I learned today you can get superior mods, barrels, armors, etc. from daily quests than any crafter can make. Sigh.

Yep.

Right now the only useful crafting is biochem since you can get the reusable-stim and medpack which is awesome. but everything else is pretty useless.

My purple Artifice equipment was way better than anything earned from questing up to level 50. I’m currently selling purple Shields on the market for 60,000 credit and was selling purple weapon Crystals for 60,000 credits until recently someone started undercutting my prices.

From what I can tell I’m the only crafter on the server who can currently craft the best Shield for tanks – Veracity shields for +defense and +shield.

Yeah, as a cybertech I can make purple max-level mods and armor pieces for orange items.

But apparently (I’m still on corellia, haven’t seen them yet), the rewards for daily quests include easily obtainable mods, armor pieces, and barrels that are superior to the max possible purple result from a crafter.

I haven’t run the Heroic that gives out Mods, but I can tell you that I’m not happy with the Mod’s available at any of the vendors. The Mods I’m using which IIRC are around level 44 give IIRC Strength, Endurance, and Defense Rating. I can’t find any Mods at the Corellia Commendations Vendor which give the same mix of bonuses I’m using (nothing available with Defense Rating IIRC), so I’ve been keeping my level 44 Mods. No one seems to be selling similar Mods on the market either. TBH I’m not entirely sure where I got mine – maybe some of the lower level Commendation Vendors sell Mods with a different mix of bonuses?

Similarly my Implants (or is it Earpiece, can’t remember which you get for commendations) seem to give better bonuses for Tanking than what I can get for commendations. That one I think I got from the market. Also anything you can create with an Augment slot is probably going to be much better than what you can get from the daily commendations.

So while I agree that it’s very annoying that a few runs of daily commendations can beat out much of what can be crafted, I think at least for Artifice and Cybertech there are a variety of different items we can still make that are better or at least more specialized than what’s available from doing dailies.

While leveling the stuff handed out as quest rewards is indeed generally inferior to crafted, but they’re good enough to level with that you never need to buy anything at all in the game until level 49, with the possible exception of ship upgrades, and you can get by perfectly well with the vendor’s greens there too. So much for mid-level crafting; why should you waste credits buying someone’s purple, when you can just level past the need for it in a day or two anyway?

At level cap people naturally want to optimize their characters, so even if it’s not that critical to gameplay, ideal equipment assumes more importance. So far as I understand it, the only cybertech item that is salable at level 50 is earpieces because the cost in daily quest tokens is high for it. Similar issues evidently occur for other professions.

Cyber and Artifice + orange social armor (for a light armor wearer) has been better while leveling than any quest reward I’ve ever seen, be it from heroics, flashpoints or otherwise. Orange armor with purples in it is pretty amazing, and it’s surprising how much of a difference it makes.

It’s easy enough to just take 3 gathering proffs and do nothing but make money, exist on quest rewards, and buy stuff once in a while on AH, I’m just having fun setting my character up with mods etc. That plus, the rep side light social armor is fantastic looking lol. I’m constantly surprised when I see people that could wear light armor in anything but the social armor, especially considering how cheap it is, and the fact you can get a full set of it at level 10.

I agree that at max level, bio is really the only viable choice, and probably what everyone should have. As someone with alt itis though, it’s nice to be able to pump out full mods and have your leveling toon maxed out. My tank that’s all orange/purple is absolutely unkillable, and that’s fun for me.

I’ve thought about creating some crafting Alts, but it seems like it would take prohibitively long to get to top tier unless you at least reached the point where you had 3-4 companions that you could send out at once.

I think the time for someone to research all purple for their level, they would have outlevel the equipment already.

plus at lvl 50, the moment you hit 50, you can get 8 champion pvp bags from doing easy daily + weekly, which each give chance to get champion pvp gear that’s on par with columi set.

Columni set is what normal 8/16 operation boss drop as well as last boss of hardmode drops. they are consider 6 levels higher than what you can craft. which basically nullify crafting at lvl 50. the best thing crafter can make is epic 50 recipe off raid boss, lvl 50 purple which chance of augment slot… even with augment slot it’s weaker than columni/champion set.

Not at all. My experience was that Purple gear would be better than anything else available for at least 4-6 levels. I would typically either Purple my Hilt or Purple my Enhancements for each crafting tier, not both.

To be honest, looking over the bottom tier level 50 gear, it doesn’t look that great to me compared to my current setup. In some respects it’s better to be sure, but it’s missing the bonuses I want. I’ve got heavy investment in Defense, Shield, and Absorption, and I’ll have to give that up if I switch over.

you are not looking at the right set, because there are different set for both pve and pvp at 50. you have to scroll all the way down at bottom of the list on vendor to check out the tanking set.

usually they list dps->heal->tank in that order. Also they don’t list set bonus when you just viewing them in merchant but all 50 set piece have set bonus that enhance your skills.

I’ve given up on my BH - Powertech. It’s like Bioware went out of their way to make it suck. A pea-shooting one-handed pistol, missle blast has an activation delay, explosive dart has an activation delay, flamethrower is disappointing. The only cool ability is Death From Above, which as a tank is very limited. The abilities are all just lacking feedback. They all “feel” like crap. The only good thing about the BH is Mako.

Contrast this directly with the Trooper - Vanguard class. A powerful rifle. And all the aforementioned BH abilities? Instant. Great feedback. I love it. Even Pulse Cannon (the counter to Flame Thrower) feels loud and powerful.

Datacrons, good idea or sad error? I don’t like platforming so I lean towards error…

you don’t need all the datacron, you just need to get the ones that give color shard, even then you just need the color for your particular stats, like inquisitor should get all the red shard because you can create high level relic that adds stats to your primary stat with 3 of same color.

At this point I’m pretending they don’t exist. I seem to get by fine without them (in PvE). That said, I know folks who love hunting for them and trying to figure out how to get to them. So, YMMV.

I see them as pretty optional, so I’d say a decent idea. The people that like them get to do them. The people that don’t can ignore them.

The Ilum daily vendors offer trivially attained gear that is better than much of the high end crafting purples. The somewhat easily attained PVP gear (RNG willing) completely blows it out of the water.

Still playing it - and mostly enjoying it on a mild scale. That said, there’s no way this game will last long if GW2 comes out soonish - unless you’re a sci-fi SW nut.

Too workman-like and too stale overall. It’s the perfect filler MMO.

Considering GW2 will be B2P and I’m almost positive it’s made with full-on passion by everyone involved - putting up 15$ a month for TOR (designed by suits, developed by I-just-want-my-paycheck people) will seem like insanity.

I feel bad for the writers, as they seem to be the only ones who had any real passion about the game.

It’s not the $15/month that is hard on these MMOs, it’s wanting to spend the time in them.

Actually, that’s true for me too. But most people seem to consider the monetary investment the deciding factor.

I hate subscription-based MMOs because of what it does to the design of the game. It’s so simple it hurts.

So, I’ll play GW2 not just because it seems fantastic - but because the designers are not obligated to keep me playing forever. They just need me to come back when an expansion is out.

That’s exactly the way I want it.
