All armored targets have at least 1 armor, and marines lose a lot more dps against units with armor than marauders. Without upgrades two marines will do 11.7 dps to a target with 1 armor, one marauder does 12.6. Marines pull ahead at +2, but marauders will do more dps if the target has any armor upgrades.
I am surprised to find I enjoy SC2 multiplayer, even though I keep getting my ass handed to me in Bronze league. I keep forcing myself to play Civ 5 in the hopes it will somehow get better, and going back to SC2 for a reward after the work of playing Civ. Man, that is so wrong.
I know this was explained somewhere earlier in the thread—which is now rather long—do I recall correctly that the league rankings are based on a hidden ELO-like score, and the number it puts next to my name is meaningless? Is there a way to see your score and/or the thresholds for the leagues? What do people mean when the refer to “an 1800 zerg player” and suchlike if the score is hidden?
I am enjoying Day9’s videos. Some university should offer him an honorary doctorate in Starcraft. People like me who barely know what they’re doing should watch his new Newbie Tuesday shows. Pylons and probes, pylons and probes…

I’m waiting for when he covers the Zerg so that I can start taking notes.
He covers Zerg regularly. There were 3 episodes just last week devoted to them:
Funday Monday: No Queens - http://day9tv.blip.tv/file/4149200/
Watch Me Learn ZvT - http://day9tv.blip.tv/file/4123304/
Still Learning ZvT - http://day9tv.blip.tv/file/4127660/
This is also the best ZvT match you will ever see, just happened a few days ago at the GSL:
You may need to create a free account, but you can watch the first match for free.
Oh thank the heavens, finally. I’ve been wanting a clock since I was in the beta.

I’ve actually watched all three of them. I’m no where near crazy enough to try a no queen build but I’ve been looking at building an in base hatchery and wondering if that will help me out.
The number (points) becomes less meaningless for diamond players – since they are already at the top league, their points better reflect how much they are winning and who they are beating. The “people” who refer to “1800 zerg player” (although that’s crazy high) are referring to 1800 point diamond players only, anyone below diamond is a newbie in their consideration. 1800 diamond is top 200 world wide I think if I understand http://sc2ranks.com/ correctly.
I know, so good right? I actually bought the ticket for the GOM season. FruitSeller/Cool definitely got some benefit from that crazy ultralisk bug, but he earned it after working so much harder than ogstop in that game.
The pro games are really dangerous for silver level people like me, as you start thinking you can get fancy when really you just need to remember to build your damn workers and other such basics.
Hey, does anyone have a trial key I can give to my GF? She burned through both of mine. :S
Good to know that Terran units are balanced against each other. Now that that’s sorted, perhaps Blizzard can work on balancing them against the other races. ;)
Just kidding, it’s not that bad. But I did sort of boggle a little the other day when a Terran player called me a fag for using “overpowered” Void Rays.
Yeah my old roommate refers to Protoss as the “noob race” and won’t shut up about how Protoss is totally imbalanced and way better than the other races. The dude plays Terran and whips out battlecruisers in pretty much every single one of his ladder matches, it makes me sad.
Yeah, it’s pretty funny/sad. This is what the guy sent me after the game ended, after saying in-game that “all you protoss fags know how to do is build void rays:”
Ravenousoul: wow u got alot of skill dude…how did you learn how to build void rays?!!
Ravenousoul has reconnected.
You: seems like it should be pretty easy for you to beat them then
Ravenousoul: your an expert at building one kind of unit WOW i wish i was like you
You: shrug
Ravenousoul: you dont deserve to win
You: practice makes perfect
Ravenousoul: yea…gratz on your undeserved win with no skill wjats so ever
You: thanks!
Ravenousoul has disconnected.
Pretty great, but really I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often. Out of like 170 1v1 games that I’ve played, I’ve had maybe a dozen people whining at the end, and this is the only guy to send me messages afterward. That’s really better than you’d expect.
Does anyone else have issues with Day9’s video not synching up with the sound? Any way to fix this?

Protoss is generally considered to be the most likely race to actually turn out imbalanced with the current balance settings by a lot of the top SC2 players as well as Day9. The thing with Terran is TvZ is obviously not there yet in terms of balance but in TvP Terran has an early game advantage but as soon as both players are on 2 bases and up the Protoss has a clear advantage due to the amount of very effective mobile AoE they can field. Essentially the larger the armies and the higher the tech levels the more a direct engagement favours Protoss.
In PvZ things seem ok currently but I think the feeling is that the truely abusive openings for Protoss against Zerg haven’t been explored as thoroughly as for Terran and that now opening 2gate zealot has been nerfed we’re likely to see stuff like cannoning the bottom of the Zerg ramp become more standard.
The thing about TvP lategame seems to be that Terran has a ton of mobility via drops / superb air units (Vikings are a beautiful thing). I really need to watch more high-end replays, though; they’re beautiful to behold.
Are you taking this from stuff Day9 has posted on the forums? I’ve watched every daily for a while now and if there is one thing Day9 does not ever do it’s speculate about which race is “IMBA!!11”. In fact he regularly mocks people that talk about imbalance and emphasizes just focusing on your own play rather than worrying about what race has the X% advantage.
Personally I’m at gold level so a certain race being a little imbalanced will never affect me ever, period (and same goes for my whiny roommate), because my winning or losing is pretty much always based on if I macro better than my opponent or not, or games are usually won or lost in a giant battle where some factor I or my opponent forgot to take into consideration wins it or loses it for me (i.e. positioning, micro, terrain features).

Wow, I’ve never been to that ranking site. It looks like according to the site I’m in the top 10,000 in the region in 1v1 with 936 points and the top 1,000 in 2v2 arranged team with 910 points.

Given that both are in the 900 range, I wonder if that is a pretty good indicator of my skill level. I can tell when I play against someone way better than me vs. when I’m playing against a platinum player.
Also, before anyone asks. My APM hovers around 50. I get supply blocked, I don’t always build drones, and I usually have a lot of unspent minerals and gas. I’m really not sure how I win other than persistence.
Wow, I hadn’t even heard that term before. Does SC2 keep track of that for you? Anyway, I’m still hoping to crack into Silver any day now, so obviously I’m not awesome.

APM is actions per minute, it tracks it in your replays.
I eat awesome for breakfast.
I looked it up. Nuts. I’ll have to look when I get home… I’m sure mine are in the low teens, heh.

I’d be surprised if it was much lower than mine. It is widely considered that 100 is a good speed to shoot for to be competitive and that pros are in the 200-300 range.
I was only calling mine out because it is quite slow relative to what people “think” is necessary to be successful. APM is so far down the list of things that give incremental improvement on play. I focus on making sure every action carries with it maximum impact. I think my edge comes in my ability to prioritize opportunities and threats.
