I’ve been looking at River of Time & DLC as well … $15, when I’ve still got Risen to crack open. I’m guessing there’s going to be a gold edition at some point, and probably for the same price point.

Well, let me ask this question of people: which is better - River of Time or Risen?

I ended up buying 30 items + some gifts.

So far SpaceChem may be my favorite. I still haven’t gotten into some of the meatier ones like The Witcher 2 or Arkham Asylum or King’s Bounty, but I’ve checked out maybe 10 and SpacChem is def. a winner.

I only ended up with a few things.

Witcher 2
Portal 2
Prince of Persia
Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light DLCs

The first two I was going to buy anyway, so getting them on sale was a bonus. The third and fourth were impulse buys. I probably would have bought a lot more if I didn’t already own all of the other things that I would have been interested in.

It’s interesting when people say what they bought, because you might hear about something worth buying. Coming in here just to flash your Steam-peen? Not so interesting.

Rock Paper Shotgun has a list up of every game Steam has on sale. I started scrolling through the list, and I was somewhere in the Gs before I stopped, thought “What the hell am I doing?!” and closed that tab. I’ve spent enough on games on past Steam sales that I’m still catching up on!

That said, there is a lot of me that envies you guys who bought like 25 games. Isn’t that a wonderful feeling, seeing all this gaming fun that waits in store for you?

So does Didimatic, only theirs is sortable.

Not to be left out, I made one Steam Sale purchase today:

Drakensang, River of Time for $10. Seems like a decent enough deal, even though I have a couple of RPGs yet to play from the frickin’ Christmas sale!

I hear you. I’m actually thinking of starting some kind of blog or forum thread where I chronicle my journey through my backlog, giving AAR-type reports on each game as I play through. I figure it would give me more motivation to play through the backlog and help polish my writing skills at the same time.

I’ve thought about something similar. Readers can play their old favorites vicariously. New players can see which old games hold up.

I tried a thread but I think blog format would be much better.

pile on! Boughted (Total below $60):
SpaceChem
AI War DLC x 2
Torchlight
Back to the Future
Borderlands GOTY
OddBoxx
Gratuitous Space Battles complete
Swords and Soldiers

And I gotted the following freebies:
Sanctum (gifted by a good friend)
Alien Breeds 2 (tickets)
SpaceChem DLC (tickets)
Guardians of Graxia Map pack (tickets)

During the sale, SpaceChem got the most play time, followed by Spectromancer. I almost picked up the DLC for Spectromancer, but changed my mind because I only just started playing the main game.

We’re in the final hours, so here are the games I picked up with uncertain expectations and really enjoyed:

Everyday Shooter -$2.50 – a dual-stick (one keyboard) shooter divided into 8 levels, with each level a “song” composed of guitar chords. As you shoot and defeat opponents, you also make guitar noises (unique to the level and enemy) and affect the soundscape. Each level also has a unique chaining mechanic (for points) and look. Its beautiful, intelligent, and very personal. Highly recommended.

Hinterland - $2.50 – Kill a monster, get a trowel, give it to the herbalist back in the town you are the lord of, she makes potions faster for you, which lets you kill more monsters and get more gold, which lets you build a house for the visiting necromancer, who allows you to conquer the countryside with a band of skeletons. Awesome.

Aquaria - $5.00 – Freakin’ GORGEOUS underwater metroidvania starring a fish-girl with an amazing voice. Starts off as a relaxing, unfocused exploring game and gradually turns into a sort of side-scrolling shooter. With singing.

Drakensang: River of Time - $9.99 – OK, it’s a big ol’ RPG and I’ve only played the first area, so I can’t really comment. But the character creation and the first area were nice! I have a good feeling about this.

Oh, I hadn’t noticed Port Royale 2 was $1.24. Get it you fools, get it!

I’ll pick up Zen Bound 2 for $1.
Project Freedom, hmm, no joystick support in a spacesim? pass.

Here’s my full ridiculous list with bite-sized commentary…

AI War - Been curious about it for a while… given backlog size, will prob remain so…

Alpha Protocol - This is about 4th on my list of RPGs I want to play that I own, but for $5 I couldn’t pass.

Audiosurf - If you let me play a game with my music and charge me less then $3 I will buy it.

Batman - Arkham Asylum - not sure if/when I will ever play… felt like I needed to have this to keep my gamer card.

Beat Hazard - played for 30 -40 minutes… not really into shmups… was kinda fun to play with a few diff songs tho… hard to go too far wrong for < $3

Drakensang - River of Time - Got this today as I read all the other posts of people talking about picking it up… my RPG backlog is completely goddamn unmanageable at this point

EU 3 - I played a lot of 2… hoping to get back into this… it’s really high on my list

Frozen Synapse 2-pack - really like the idea… hard to figure out when I’ll play tho

HOMM V pack - Got all this because I like HOMM games… I later got King’s Bounty which I want to play more so the chances of this ever getting installed seem bleak now

Hinterland - I have put a few hours into this and will prob do a few more… it feels like it’s 80% of a really great game… I’ve really enjoyed playing it… just don’t think it will have huge replayablilty for me. Still a great deal for the price.

King Arthur Collection - The odds of this getting played ever seem awfully low…

King’s Bounty - I am really looking forward to giving this a go… top 3 anticipated…

Majicka - I got this because it seemed like it might be good co-op to play with my 8 year old daughter

M&B Collection - never played any of these games but always curious about them… I really want to play them, but don’t know when it will be…

Risen - Seems awesome… don’t know when I’ll find the time.

Sanctum - I like TD games and I like the co-op for my daughter.

SpaceChem - I’ve played a few hours of this and it’s really fun even if it feels kind of like a job…

Spectromancer - I like card games like Magic, and it seems like it can be played quickly, so whee…

Terraria - This was completely pointless… I have minecraft that I don’t play… I guess i needed more… part of me thinks I may play with my daughter…

Trine - Was really cheap and I was on a roll I guess… I don’t even… …

Warhammer DoW 2 Retribution - I’ve been DoW 2 lately and enjoying it… seemed like an easy add…

Witcher 2 - This is the only thing I bought over about $10 in the sale… it is installed and has my attention as something I want to play… having a hard time getting going tho… the controls are absolutely pwning me right now tho… can’t get anything going… and the very first actions I take in the game involve fleeing from a dragon… so I don’t know… maybe I’m already done there…

Gifts

For my Daughter - stuff we can play co-op - all games I have too…

Civ 5 - We’ve already played 10 hours of co-op… lots of fun… she’s also played a full 2 player small map game on her own…

Defense Grid + DLC - She played this a little before she got Civ 5 and liked it…

Majicka

Terraria

Sanctum

Other -

Gifted a friend Terraria since I just got the 4-pack…

Everyone starting Witcher 2 needs to wait a few days for the new patch. That should smooth out a lot of issues, though you’ll still need to awkwardly read your journal for tutorial information.

Anyone wondering just what Tim is referring, see here. I’d like to get Witcher 2, but was planning to hold out for the 360 version.

OR just play it through once really fast, because it’s excellent*, and then play it again after the patch since you’ll want to anyway!

*at least it is so far, having just finished chapter 2.

None of that’s really meaningful to anyone starting the game. Just wait for the patch this week.

I know your half-joking, but it will keep getting better as they work on it. And right now there’s no need for anyone to accidentally choose the dragon part as the first thing in the game.

Oh, wow. That Witcher 2 patch sounds nice.

Item storage has been added. Players can now store items from their Inventory at inns. To leave items in storage or collect previously stored items, talk to innkeepers.

So the patch you’re talking about isn’t the 1.3 patch? Some of that stuff sure seemed relevant to people starting the game. Not sure why you’d take issue with me trying to be helpful.
