It seems like something that should be possible, but I thought the devs had ruled it out. However, I can’t find a post about it.
They do say that hive minds can’t access the Psionic or tech ascension paths, so it would be strange IMO if you could get to hive mind on those paths.
That’s a good find, I suspect I’m incorrect in my theory. Like I said, my initial gut reaction was to post something along the lines of what you posted, which is probably a safe bet.

That’s my understanding as well. Regarding Hiveminds incorporating other pops, perhaps they could genetically modify a race to also be a hivemind, but I believe they just immediately get processed into food. Guess we’ll find out for sure here in a couple days!
So, does anyone have an opening game planned? Hiveminds sound like a lot of fun, but Psionics really intrigue me too.

I would just like to say that whenever I see the word ‘Stellaris’ I think ‘Volare’ as sung by Tony Clifton.
May the curse strike someone else!
After a certain gene tech has been unlocked (can’t recall the name offhand), Hive Minds can genetically modify alien populations into Hiveminds so they are not processed.

So the Banks update has been released and Utopia will be released in about 15 minutes. I expect deep reviews of the gameplay in, let’s say 20 minutes. Don’t let me down, people!

A question re Banks vs. Utopia -
Do you have to have Utopia to get some of the new social/governmental additions, or do they all come with Banks? Late-game mega-structures don’t mean a whole lot to me because I have never, ever, played a Paradox game to the end.
If I can get all the social stuff without buying Utopia, I would prefer that, but if I have to spend the money I can live with that as well.
Factions, Traditions, and Civics come with the Banks patch. However, Utopia expands upon them, adding perks and more depth. One of those perks unlocks megastructures, but that’s not the only thing that Utopia does. Here’s a review where someone tries to delineate between them; https://www.pcinvasion.com/stellaris-utopia-dlc-review and here’s a wiki page that tries to do the same; http://www.stellariswiki.com/Utopia
Note that neither are official Paradox writings, of course.
I think the government stuff is free, but stuff like Ascension perks and the three unique Civics (plus I’m sure other goodies) are things that would affect the entire game, even the start, if you wanted to encounter other races that had those new Civics, for example.
- Fanatic Purifiers is a civic that gives you significant military bonuses, but will automatically purge any alien Pops in your empire and make most diplomatic options unavailable
- Syncretic Evolution is a civic that allows you to start with a second, “workhorse” species on your homeworld
- Mechanists is a civic that allows you to start with a few robot Pops, and the technology to build more
Fanatic Purifiers and Hive minds were always in the game, but you couldnt play as them. But otherwise you are right about the rest.
Utopia basically adds more depth to the Banks update.
I just noticed you can’t push a population’s standard of living up to “chemical bliss” without the DLC. One of the ingame prerequisites, along with a particular form of government and consumer goods cost, is listed as “must have DLC”.

I second this! Due to a plea for assistance from one of my friends, it’s looking like I won’t have a free minute to sit down in front of my computer until Saturday. My plans! Ruined!
Maybe I just need to come down with a debilitating illness and miss work on Friday or something.
$20 seems a bit high to me. Edit, but I guess it is standard for paradox.

I also hope that you guys can share some impressions of Utopia, especially if you weren’t too high on Stellaris pre-Utopia. If you think it takes the game from pretty blah to pretty good than I’m in.

I’m having a good time so far, I haven’t played much since launch so I am discovering all of these neat changes that were in previous patches as well.
Question for those who have been following the dev diary leadup: Are ascension perks only unlocked after completing a tradition tree? If so, there’s the same number of perks as there are tradition trees, which would mean you take all of the trees which doesn’t make sense to me.
I’ve only spent a little time with it so far, but I really appreciate the QOL improvements. However, I’m a bit puzzled at all the system redesigns. Why such a dramatic overhaul of core gameplay? Is it an effort to give the factions more personality? I hope that’s the objective.
However, the unity/tradition/ascension stuff looks like just another tech tree bolted onto the side of the game. In other words, the Firaxis approach to game design. Hmm. I’m not sold on it so far. We’ll see.

I’ve not got the expansion, but I started a new game on the patch to see if I was interested. And a few hours in it’s not feeling much different, except for the bolted on Civ 5 social policies Tom mentions. Not sure I can really be bothered.
