Studios for Independant Studios?

I apologize for the confusing title. But, I will elaborate. I was reading this article,, and it leads me to think about how independent game studios will have to operate in the future. It seems like studios are either closing or merging everyday. Perhaps this would occur less often if the facilities for game production were managed by a separate company. A company whose main goal is to have the space and resources you need for your game. It would the equivalent of a movie lot, but for game production. Everything from the actual offices and motion capture studios, to the computers and software would be provided, thereby reducing the cost of production. The studio could handle multiple games/services at once to support itself. Has this been tried before? Is it working?
