See also the minor league baseball team, the Spokane Indians, who are sponsored by the local tribe and have logo and uniforms designed with the tribe’s input:

The Seminole tribe has famously supported Florida State’s usage of their name.

Interestingly, the Redskins logo was itself designed by a member of the Blackfeet tribe, and who went on to be president of the National Congress of American Indians.

I think that maybe the issue was that while the name and logo had backing from the blackfeet nation (the logo actually depicts a Blackfeet chief, John “Two Guns” White Calf), the name itself was broader and so I guess it drew ire from the broader native american community.

It’d be interesting if the Redskins actually changed their name to something like the Washington Blackfeet, although I suspect that would just create more angst.

“Blackfeet” also wasn’t a slur word. “Redskin” was used as a slur for hundreds of years.
