Seriously. Watching what my dad get brainwashed over the past twenty years was as hard as watching him die. I mean that. He was always conservative, always a card-carrying member of the NRA, but he was smart and sane. His last ten years he was a raving lunatic fully believing every crazy rightwing fever dream. Fox primed him, Facebook sealed the deal.

Fuck Murdoch and fuck Zuckerberg and all their ilk. They destroyed what was once a good man as well as any decent relationship we may have had for the past decade or more.

I’ve been off of it for four years and I’m really enjoying this particular fool’s errand. Nothing of value was lost.

As above, my point is, it is great. For you. To me the fools errand is that it doesn’t actually solve the problem. Not until you convince the other billions of people on it to abandon it.

It’s the sort of problem - like basically the entire international supply chain or climate change - that requires collective action (for those in cheap seats: government is a form of collective action).

Collective action is the combination of individual actions.

As you say, it’s like climate change… if everyone says, “Well fuck it, I’m not gonna give a crap about any of this stuff, because is just gonna keep doing stuff, so whatever!” then no one ever does anything.

And hell, maybe you don’t think Facebook is even bad. In that case, cool, keep using it.

But if you actually think Facebook is bad? Then you shouldn’t use it. Because you’re perpetuating the problem then. And frankly, you’re funding the problem at that point.

I take it, then, you are unfamiliar with the term collective action problem. Moving on.

In this case, that’s not really the problem though, right?
I mean, other people continuing to use facebook… doesn’t make you need to use facebook.

And furthermore, you ceasing to use facebook makes other people need to use it less. The perennial objection to leaving facebook is “there’s all these people I want to keep up with on it.” Don’t be one of those people.

It’s true it is a feedback loop of a sort.

But I’ve seen what happens when I’m not there and I’ve lost all my other parents already, so I’m fighting to keep the one that’s left.

we need to form a support group, I’m in this camp as well.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding your tone, but what are you trying to accomplish with this?

Go home, @inactive_user, you’re drunk.

I actually created a new Facebook account after deleting my old one because I felt the need to connect after many years. My friends list is still tiny though. I also noticed that a lot of my old friends don’t seem to be using it much even though they have accounts. I also wish FB would get rid of the ads and Recommended Posts.

I don’t know if Facebook’s larger issues can be fixed though. They keep asking for government regulation instead of doing it themselves.

I keep one for IMs with family/friends who haven’t moved on to other platforms. I never post anything, but if something’s important enough to a loved one for them to share, I’ll give it a “like.” For whatever it’s worth, I’ve also noticed the volume of interaction diminish significantly over time. Some people have picked up new platforms, some have hit ages or stages of health where they just can’t do it anymore, etc… FB’s days are numbered, as with all things. IMHO, the brand’s only hope at longevity as a social media platform is a massive reconstruction from the ground up into something innovative and likely much leaner, but that requires the sense to acknowledge permanently lost ground and nimble enough management, neither of which seem to exist over there.

This was three days ago, but I wanted to apologize to anyone in the thread who took away a negative message from my flagged post. Took a day off from Qt3 and sent KevinC a separate apology via DM.

I love you all, even if I hate the delusions some of you tell yourselves about Facebook ;)

Carry on!

You’re a class act, Adam. Kudos.

Yeah, Adam sent me a super nice PM. Just to make sure it’s clear, Adam’s angst was directed at the right-wing media. I admit I wasn’t quite sure how to read his post myself initially so I hoped he would clarify, which he did.

Anyway, thanks, Adam! You’re a good dude.

“Thinking differently than you” = “wants to kill you and end your way of life”

It’s funny how only one side is ever held to this mythical standard.

False Information!

Yes. That’s what I posted Facebook. You’re fucking amazing. You deserve all the money in the world.

Also there is no appeal, no way to contact anyone, nothing. Good job.

Re-posted by a Conservative Christian teacher friend of mine.

Damn all those selfish assholes marching in BLM protests demanding the right to be treated the same as anyone else and the privileges of not having police hassle them, beat the shit out of them and shoot them in their own homes, on their front porch or in the back seven times for the heinous crime of having more melanin in their skin.

The level of disconnect it takes to repost something like this and not realize how incredibly racist and offensive it is…Conservative Christian White Privilege on full display. “We’re better because we march for the unborn babies!” Like it’s a fucking contest.

I’m betting you can find a Tweet from Walsh asking where the black people are for the BLM marches.

Because they were all doing it for fucking months.
