Surviving the Aftermath - What Happens After You Survive Mars?

Update 2 was put out last month!

So this game is on update #4 now, and I just picked it up and played for a few hours tonight. I have to say, it’s really pretty good. It plays like Tropico at its core, in that you are basically just building up a new society, but instead of being all tropical and touristy, this is, of course, post-apocalyptic.

Update 4 introduced vehicles that you can recover, repair, and use to transport your specialists around faster. I just found my first one, but haven’t found fuel yet. I believe there’s an option to manufacture bio-fuel, so that will be my next task.

So far, in my play though, I’ve seen 0 bugs or crashes. The game is in really good shape for early access. I highly recommend it to colony builder enthusiasts, if you are ok with buying on Epic. I’ve heard it’s coming to Steam once released, but as of yet, there is no Steam page for it.

More updates!

Roadmap is here:

Out today, anyone biting? Doesn’t seem like a lot of interest in this one anywhere.

I bought this in early access from the Epic store with a coupon I believe so I’ve got it but I haven’t spent time playing it. If it’s really out of EA today then I guess it’s time to dust it off and take a looksee.

It’s not.

It was supposed to be, but 1.0 has been pushed to early 2021. I think this is just the first it is showing up on Steam after the Epic embargo period.

“Our initial plans had us having Surviving the Aftermath in Early Access for a year, and releasing in October 2020. While working with our players it became obvious that we’re working with a truly special game, and we wanted more time to go deeper into gameplay mechanics to meet our community’s expectations. Development was also impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic, and because of this we decided to launch Surviving the Aftermath 1.0 in early 2021.

Ahh, must be it. I got an email from Steam about it today. Didn’t realize it was already out on Epic (in EA).

This is really good. You guys should get it. They just released the Nuclear Winter update.

I liked surviving Mars a lot more than most folks here, so I’m definitely keeping my eye on this one.

I don’t really see a need to get it while it is in early access, but I could be convinced to give it a shot.

What are your initial thoughts. Is it at all related to surviving Mars?

I watched about five minutes of the paradox stream of this release. They mentioned that this is the last big release before they launch. They indicated there are going to be more patches of course but just no big features added. I suppose that implies release is pretty soon.

I believe they also said there will be a price increase when they hit 1.0 so if anyone is on the fence… Consider that.

I haven’t played it since the last 2 or 3 major updates but I wasn’t really a fan of this. For me it was too random. I think you can make games as hard as you like but you need to leave the player with the feeling they can succeed. The last game I played the event Nuclear fallout was triggered early on and the remedy to surviving it is way down the research tree. Except progressing on the research tree relies on exploring the world map which is random…you can guess where this is going. It seems too easy to be left with no solutions to problems. Apart from that its generally quite dull with too much micromanagement.

Even though it has less stuff in it, I enjoyed Judgment: Apocalypse Survival Simulation more.

Did you by chance get to play Endzone ? Similar setting and premise, but more city builder focus and zero combat.

That one had passed me by actually, into the backlog it goes…

It’s not related to Surviving Mars at all. I think Paradox is maybe looking to make some kind of franchise with “Surviving” in it, but they’re only connected by a name.

This has never happened to me in 8+ full gameplays I’ve done. In fact, I’m pretty sure for a thorough player this is not possible.

Trying to throw some shade on my playing skills eh? Sure, maybe I’m not a thorough player then. But even if you removed the randomness I experienced, I still wouldn’t play it.

Oh no! But it did come off that way didn’t it. Sorry about that. What happened with me is my first playthru nearly a year ago I practically ran out of resources and I realized it was because I was wasting a lot of them and hadn’t been very thorough. Some people had complained about resource options around the same time and ever since then the dev’s made sure it was changed so if you were careful you’d have more than enough. Ever since then I had way more than I could ever use.

So it was based on my own experience more than yours as a counterweight. Though if you’re playing on the hardest difficulties the formula may chance. I always played on medium.

This really confused me when I first watched a stream of it. Lost all interest immediately.

There’s a trail version available on Xbox on the Microsoft Store. Not sure about the PC.

Whoa. OK, after playing the well-done tutorial, I might actually like “Endzone” more than “Surviving the Aftermath”. Not sure. Both are great games.

@Ginger_Yellow Want to hear something weird? To me “Endzone” fits better with the “Surviving Mars” theme than “Surviving the Aftermath”.

High-five! I love that game. JASS! It manages to get so many things right.
