Melbourne:

Been lurking for a while, most of my pics are only really interesting to me and my family, but this one I wanted to share, got a new pet outside my house:

Gonna try to get a better pic of his (her?) fangs tomorrow, this is the best I got so far:

Think it’s a mostly harmless wolf spider, but trying to get a confirmed ID.

Cool pics, Kadath! Do you feed it bugs? I would have to. I guess I’m just warped like that! : P

This guy is brand new here but I don’t need to feed em, they seem to do a-ok on their own!

Beaker’s reaction to the spider pic:

I clicked on the topic to open at the first unread post. It loaded in the background and when I clicked to the tab I was startled with a near full-screen, close up picture of a spider.

Thanks Kadath.

(Nice pictures though).

Thankya!

Anyone else do World Wide Photo Walk this year? I haven’t missed one yet! Had fun in Fells Point Baltimore this year, was a new area for me and happened to coincide with a street fair. If you like doing pics of strangers this was a target rich environment but it’s not really my bag. I tried doing a little bit of everything, B&W, panos, even a few HDR. My style and selection never are in contention for prizes but I always like to submit one for consideration just for the fun of it. Pretty sure this is gonna be my entry, Chickadee:

(I’ve been informed it’s a sparrow not a chickadee! Wooops)

It’s one of my favorite events each year and I had a blast this time. Hopefully some of you joined in this year!

The shadows make that picture.

Camped overnight in Anza Borrego desert this past weekend:

Awesome sky pics, CCZ. I used to live in the Sonoran Desert and the nights were very spectacular, especially during monsoon season.

Thanks!

The conditions were pretty much perfect (taken last Friday night)… new moon and very clear cloudless skies. I’ve seen “dark skies” before both here in Anza-Borrego and a few other even more remote places but as someone who has mostly lived near cities it is still always jawdropping to get out there and see so many stars, and then stars behind those stars, and then stars behind those stars, etc.

Some amazing pictures from teh American Civil war which have been colourized. The quality of some of the shots is just amazing.

Love those CCZ!

Yosemite was closed, but we made the best of it. Went past the barriers we could and had to skip the visitors center and all the activities there. Never got a good shot of Half dome’s good side because of it. Wound up going to Mono Lake and Mammoth lakes for most of our time there instead, wasn’t a bad call.

They say you can’t really capture the enormity and grandeur of the national parks in a photo but I gave it the old college try!

This is one of my favorites:

Great Shots, really like the last one

A few from me, been pottering a bit these last few weeks, what with Autumn coming in and kids back to school so thought a few randoms would be appropriate.

On Saturday my son and I went to the Sunseeker Rally finish line parade as well as reliving my youth by playing the 2p machines in the Amusement Arcades :). This shot is the winners of the historical section and overall season winners.

Another batch of macro photos for arthropod aficionados (plus one squirrel). Google+ gallery with full-resolution pictures, announcement with more info. Below a low-resolution sample of a giant cricket:

Thank you, it’s my favorite too.

Up next are my tons from San Francisco: Sea Lions, Golden Gate and Alcatraz tourist overload!

What do you have to do to get those really tight close ups of bugs and stuff? Is that the result of a special lens? I can’t seem to do that sort of shot with a 50MM lens on my old Canon Digital Rebel. I have never really figured out all the auto settings, so maybe this is something you do with the camera itself (as opposed to having the right lens).

I rarely want to take pictures of bugs and stuff, but my son had a project for school that called for some close ups and we were trying to get some shots of spiders that didn’t come out too well. :(

That’s funny. +1 squirrel is my usual restaurant reservation.
