And now that I have a proper film scanner, here are a few of the first sheets of 4x5 film I’ve developed. I was pretty intimidated by making the jump to large format and developing my own film, but it actually turned out not so bad–and I love not having to wait several weeks to see what my shots look like.

They have a few water marks (need some Photo-Flo…) and more dust and cat hair than I’d prefer, but I’m pretty happy with the results. At the default scanner setting, the images were just a little under 14600x12000.

Do you scan the negatives or the developed pictures?

The negatives. The software for the scanner automatically inverts it.

Gorgeous pics atom!

Massive Murmuration!

Some more large format shots. I really love shooting with my 4x5, and I haven’t touched my medium format kit or my DSLR since I made the jump. I’m getting the itch to try out developing color film on it soon.

I visited Komodo recently, the realm of dragons. Took quite a few photos! I particularly like these ones…

I love the detail in this one, you can reach out and touch it. Once.

Komodos are super curious, always checking you out…

We visited during the middle of the day, so I had to make do with the intense sunlight. I tried overexposing this one a little, I think it looks like it’s stepping out of the fire.

And the other view that you tend to get a lot of. I think it gives a sense of the swaying motion of the hips and tail.

“Look at that. Looks tasty. Is it edible? I should try it.”

Those things are horrifying monsters! And I really liked the pics.

Other than size and oral bacteria, they aren’t more monstrous than other monitor lizards.

There’s a great NOVA episode about just monitor lizards.

For some reason or another, my brother happened to have some old x-ray film sitting around, and so he cut a couple of sheets down to 4x5. Kinda neat stuff, but it’s double-sided so it scratches super, super easy.

Not sure where to ask this, but seems like there are a lot of experts in this thread. Anyone know of a good site, YouTuber, or book to learn how to edit? I’m not using
Photoshop, but seems like the basics are all the same no matter what the software. Searching, I haven’t really found anything good.

Edit: found this from Tyler Stalman that was helpful, if anyone else is interested. Its iPhone based, but it can be applied to anything.

Not recent, but I was going through my pictures and this is one of my favorites (I need to edit it). It was in Greenland in June, and this was taken after midnight, the sun never goes down in the summer. I had gone out to take some pictures of the geese and their chicks in the local pond. I was laying down on the ground, focused on the geese when I felt a tug on my ankle. My first thought was that my drunken friends had snuck up on me, since everyone else was coming home from the bar. I turned around and see this guy tugging on my jeans. I guess he came to see if I was still alive. He circled me before he ran off. All my shots were panicked, “OMG I have to get a good shot of him!” pictures. This was the best one.

FTFY. :) But seriously, nice shot!

I didn’t know where else to put it so here’s some pix of the schoolyard me and the gang of gardeners I’m with are putting the finishing touches on:

Now imagine this schoolyard as something of a parking lot, just flat tiles with some drawings on them, a big concrete-lined sandbox and that’s it.

We took out most of the tiles, used some of them as foundation for the castle, built those cool arena things from them and disposed of a ton of the others.

We fought with and destroyed a 20 year old thron bush. We planted a TON of trees and flowering shrubbery, all just striplings as its winter and we’ll have to see next summer how that turns out!

We carted in fresh soil, fresh white sand and woodchips. We made new and interesting looking pathways.

Not shown is the other side of the schoolyard, where built a huge arena with beautiful mosaic bricks that are made by the schools’ children themselves. Behind the arena is a big ol’ vegetable garden with some very pretty pathways built in. We planted trees to put the arena in the shade in the future and a lovely football> soccer field.

Anyway, that’s what I do when I get the chance. And they give me money for that. With which I buy cool things like chipping in for Jeff!

That’s sweet, @schurem! I’d love to see a summertime picture of it in a few months when all those plants are green.

Wait do you have a tree bridge to get to the castle? That whole production looks fantastic.

Yeah that’s a tree trunk indeed. In fact, upon inspection it looks like we are going to be manhandling the thing a couple feet to the side as it’s too close to the brickwork of the waterworks were making.

I’ll be sure to revisit it next summer with you guys. We got the maintenance contract to this one, so inshallah we shall be watching these babies bloom.

Welcome to 2020. I’ve been renting gear a lot since most of mine seems to really dated and/or broken and working on side projects I need more versatility then what I currently have. Not being employed doesn’t help much, but over the next few months everything should change around to the better. Then becomes the big question as to what to upgrade to.

Meanwhile, some other shots from the past year:

I always remember that Christien Murawski liked this photo, so reposting it again:
