Okay, I’ve been curious for a while, but those airplane shots are phenomenal. What are you shooting with, Reemul? Do you just have a huge sensor, up the ISO, and stop the shutter down to have a long depth of field, or are you somehow focusing on things going that fast?

From what I can tell, he is using the following:
APS-C size sensor
a zoom lens with a maximum focal length of 200mm@F/6.3 (35 mm equivalent: 300mm)
ISO 100
shutter speeds around 1/1000s-1/2000s
as wide open an aperture as the zoom allows

Thanks mouselock. One thing that really helps is the location is perfect. It sits on a cliff top and the planes fly past at a low level and are amazingly close.

And as Kong says I was shooting at as wide open as the lens would allow which is 6.3@200mm which is 350mm equivalent (1.5 crop). This kept the shutter speed as fast as possible. I did try some lower shutter speeds but really needed a tripod as these were all hand held shots.

The camera is a Sony Nex-7 with an APS-C sensor, this is the same as in most DSLR cameras. The camera is nice but for action shots it’s not as good as it has contrast focusing rather than phase which is a lot faster however with practice you can do well. This was my first trip to the airshow with this specific camera and results were a lot better due to it have a viewfinder

Great stuff Reemul. Thanks for posting them!

Alan’s always look professional to me! Is that the backside of the Monterrey Bay Aquarium, Alan?

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I still have a lot to learn.

Yes, that’s the backside of the aquarium. Hell, for various reasons, I haven’t even been inside yet.

Just back from a week at Center Parcs which is an activity resort with the wife and kids and took these. This shot was taken from my chalet window at Center Parcs at Longleat in Wiltshire.

You should go Alan, they have some terrific exhibits. I love their artificial beach and tide pool exhibits (complete with artificial wave generators, but real birds and fish), I always got a kick out of the exhibit where you can touch a member of the stingray family ( they’re all just swimming around the tank, but you’re allowed to stick your hand in), and the sea otters are great fun. The main giant fish tanks are great too, plus the jellyfish exhibit is neat if you haven’t seen them up close before.

And, there are great opportunities to take cool shots in the aquarium, though you will have to have a fast lens because a lot of the exhibits don’t allow flashes (the cuttlefish don’t even like the light metering flashes:()

We had our annual “take a trip to the mountains with 3 other neighbour families” this weekend. For once, the weather was nice and myself and one of the other dads took the opportunity to climb to the summit of the Trysil mountain. Not that long a trip, but pretty steep, especially since we both are really out of shape. It was really worth it though.

On our way up:

And of course the reward when we reached the summit

You climbed a mountain for some skunky Mexican beer?

Damn. You are just a glutton for punishment.

Nice pics, though!

Oooo that’s harsh :) Sol is an excellent summer beer IMHO.

If I was a modern-day pulp adventurer-archaeologist with a silver-spoon background, I would absolutely buy a Catalina to fly around.

The funny thing is that I’ve only been there once, over eight years agao, yet I recognized it immediately.

Great photos as always in this thread of late.

I’ve only seen it in documentaries (and Star Trek IV) and I recognized it immediately, too.

Definitely at or near the top of my places-to-visit list.

Lots of details are still present in the clouds (put it through Photoshop), which are blown out at the moment. Also, I feel like I am listing - I’ve stood at that spot many times and taken photos there, and I don’t quite remember getting that feeling. Opening second window - yeah, look at the trees.

And from Twin Lakes looking back up towards where I took the above pic (I was standing near the top of the waterfall for that one).

Same with the mountains/sky here - a little overexposed. It can be brought down a little to recover detail. Take the trail up to Crystal Lake and you’ll get some great views of the Crag as you hike along (I think I have one on this thread somewhere).

I recently got a new phone with a pretty decent camera in it, so I’ve been trying to take more pictures since it’s always on me.

From a recent trip to Montreal. Kinda cheating, because it was lit for me.

Also cheating, because it’s lit for me. I imagine it’s hard to take a bad picture of this. Still pretty though.

I think this could do with cropping out the top and bottom 1/4, but I liked how well it captured the color bands. That’s actually pretty much what it looked like.

I know I say this every page or so but, wow, you guys are awesome. Some of the pictures literally take my breath away.

How much of a difference does doing post on some of these pictures make? I’d love to see some before / after. All of my blog pictures are as I took them (and also at 20% to save on bandwidth) as I’ve been a bit lazy on revisiting them to see if I could improve them. I at least need to fix the ones from that day in San Francisco when I had a smudge on the lens. If it makes a huge difference I really should tweak some, I suppose (the originals, not the lower-rez blog ones, of course).

Edit: Man, I really should’ve gotten a RX-100 before my trip this year. That was stupid of me, my existing camera (2010’s DSC-HX5V) is getting a bit long in the tooth.

The upper fighter is a Hawker Hurricane.

Great set of photos!
