Besides publicity, is there a reason they flew Endeavour so low?

All publicity, far as I know. The Blue Angels also fly this low for the Fleet Week activities (which is coming next month).

— Alan

Yes, they flew it low so people could see it. Though the 747 carrier only flies up to 10,000 feet when carrying a Shuttle anyway, which is about 28K feet lower than a typical 747 airliner cruise. That’s one reason the Shuttle ferry flights take so long – at that altitude, and the slower speed with all that drag, the fuel burn is really high.

I notice Alan’s SF shots show F-15 escorts. All the shots I’ve seen show the 747 being escorted by NASA Dryden’s F/A-18Ds. Guess they needed armed escorts to protect them from the SF hippies.

Something different, this my eldest son Jack handing over his little brother’s christening candle to his grandad looking very serious.

Christenings are serious business. :)

Good shot!

And a final batch of Endeavors.

Continuing some more Vietnam stuff…

Those are awesome pictures, Mr. Dunkin! Can I ask what the Gatling gun is from the Vietnam pictures? It looks somehow not real but then again, I’ve only seen them in movies

Wow, those boats all clearly look much different than the type you see in American ports on the west coast. In some ways, they remind me of what I imagine a Viking ship must have looked like.

The minigun is on a doorgun setup on a Huey outside a war museum in HCMC (or should I say, in the proper propaganda dogma, an “American war of aggression” museum).

— Alan

Dude, the War Remnants Museum hasn’t been known as the Museum of American War Crimes in years.

Oh yeah. Well, they still make lots of references to the war of aggression and war crimes within the museum.

— Alan

Yeah. The Agent Orange exhibit is particularly jarring.

I like how it presents the aftereffects on both the Vietnamese and American survivors (and their heirs).

Couple more…

Random SF night time-lapsed shot:

OMG, Crab and Jazz Festival? I am so there!

…or, I would be, were I not marooned in the dismal, dreary hinterlands of the east coast.

My kids on a visit to Glendaloch:

Nice light!

Took a morning trip to Moors Valley Country Park and got these.

My daughter, Elizabeth, has been playing on a mixed singles Ultimate team that did pretty well, placing 9th at the regionals.

All of these were shot with a Nikon D600 and a Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8, at 1/640th and various aperture settings (I was shooting in shutter priority mode.)

And an obligatory shot of Elizabeth.

You already have a D600? I so hate you.
