I sold my D800 to get the D600.
I never really warmed up to the handling of the D800. The balance seemed awkward, and it just didn’t feel good in my hands. The shutter was also incredibly loud.
I like the way the D600 feels, even with a big lens like the 70-200 f/2.8.
Shutter is supposed to be either more quiet or there’s a quiet mode on the D600… how is it?

Fleet Week and Flowers. They go so well together! First, flowers.

Next after flowers is planes!
This the Patriots Jet Team:
Next is some F-22 action. Instantly noticeable that kind of shocked me as it’s the first time I’ve seen it in flight is that the Raptor is a big fighter.

Of course then there were the Blue Angels…

Finally, some ship stuff! LHD-8 Makin Island and some America’s Cup stuff.

The default shutter is pretty darned quiet. Lots quieter than the D800, and I think quieter than the D7000 I used to own. Even at 5.5fps in continuous high mode, the noise wasn’t obtrusive, as opposed to the KA-CHUNK!!! made by the D800 shutter. Haven’t tried quiet mode yet, but I’m sure it’s even less noticeable.
I was surprised, though, at how much I disliked lugging around the bulk and just handling the D800. Surprised, because I had carried around a D300 for years, which is only marginally smaller. The D600 is a half pound lighter, and only a little larger than the D7000, and that seems to make all the difference. Plus, my short stubby fingers wrap around it a little better.

That HueyCobra looks badass. I love Marine aviation. “Don’t give us new planes and helicopters. We’ll just hang an increasing assortment of weapons and sensors off the old stuff until it can’t fly anymore, and then replace it.”
Well they do have Ospreys but yeah… they always make do with whatever they can get. When your equipment starts getting to the "-Z"s in models you’re using some elder-game stuff :)
The Cobra is bad-ass though, always has been.
The LHD-8 is interesting. It’s a hybrid-powered amphib carrier, the first of its type, so it runs partially on diesel but mostly on electricity from what I understand. The fuel savings is reportedly “tremendous”, but generates a longer logistical trail of support.

I realized last night that my photos from the weekend are way too blue and there’s not enough warmth. I dunno why I do that, it was a conscious decision that felt good at the time but now that I look at them again they’re just… too blue. I’ll need to go back and re-do a lot of them.
Attempted to get some shots of the lightning over the lower peninsula/south bay last night and wasn’t very successful. I also totally forgot that my circular polarizer was on the wide-angle last night so that might have hurt a bit as well. A couple of shots where I know I saw actual lightning strokes were not captured at all, and the rest is just cloud stuff.

Yeah sony’s default WB is very bluish to me, I tend to use a custom WB for my shots that is slightly wamrer with less blue and a bit more green/yellow.
A lot of it is also personal taste

No reason beyond I like trees:

And in addition to trees, Mists of Pandaria meets the Chinese Gardens at Huntington Library:
The instrument is a Pipa. And that’s all I know about it beyond when the musician was playing it and it contributed to the gardens atmosphere greatly. You could walk around the music would drift by on a gentle breeze (the thunder and lightning and hail came the day after I shot this thankfully).
Vietnamese monk in traditional attire (there were about four wandering about, enjoying the gardens greatly) - not sure if the iPad was traditional or not.
I took an assload of photos from the DC trip so they’ll take awhile to work through, and I’m just kind of hitting stuff randomly.

Was passing through Sherborne (Dorset) and stopped for a 10 minute break outside the Abbey followed by a meal in a local country pub. Never photographed someting like this, wasn’t easy as it was all a rush and everything was lit with these lights that made everything look very yellow.
Wife is keen to revist for a day out but managed a few shots i’m happy with.
