A Self Portrait

Acquired a GoPro HD 3 Black this weekend (at a great price, way below MSRP) and did a sunset video test last night, along with some experimentation with Premiere Pro for a time-lapse. A decent result is this, though to get a decent appreciation of the scene you’ll need to be in 1080HD and go full screen:
The sky thing bothers me though. It seemed like the camera re-spots for lighting every minute or two (30 secs = 10 minutes of real time), so the sky seems to brighten in steps. Or maybe there’s something in the algorithm that re-adjusts when you speed it up, since I don’t think this is noticeable in real-time. In any event, it’s slightly frustrating. Moreso as it takes about an hour to process this video so quite time-consuming.

Well, if it has auto-exposure, which I’m sure it does, it’s not surprising that it is constantly adjusting like that. Annoying that it seems to do it at intervals, though, and not continuously.

Pretty happy with this, simple NEX-5n and fixed 35mm Macro:

It would look better if it didn’t have all that yellow crap on it.
(kidding! Nice shot)

Thank you, debating doing a version with the second bug shopped out, but i kinda like it there for scale too!
For the second time lapse test in the Go Pro Hero 3, I just put together a sunset video of just a bunch of images taken at 10 second intervals and stitched together (this one is ~270 shots or so). Worked out really well, and as it turns out the video is insanely easy to make and process.

This might only seem exceptional to me, but as I was taking pictures of my son, I realized by the look of urgency on my daughter’s face that it was a very close race. I looked up just in time to see him finish freestyle for a close win. :)
When I’m taking pictures, I tend to lose the big picture. So satisfying to look through the lens and think: Oh, my! He could win!

Great action shot Tim! You did a great job capturing the energy and excitement of the race.

I took this last week at the Volcanoes National Park on the big island of Hawaii. This is a view of Kīlauea spewing volcanic gas at night. As you can see, the lava below lights up the smoke quite well. Very cool place to visit.
Note, that’s actually smoke, not lava - I had to use a long exposure (6s) to get this much detail and the brightly lit portion got overexposed.

Maybe not for this thread. But it came out so damn good.

Sometimes I hate that the sun sets so early in December, cutting my walks short. Today I didn’t mind so terribly much.

Trip today to Farmer Palmer’s a kids farm where Santa was dossing in the Pig pen, kids loved it. Anyways it was raining heavily and nice and quiet. A few shots from the visit.

It’s a picture. It’s interesting. I take it, it’s recent.
And it looks so very yummy.
Went out to Pacifica today to get some shots. It was cold and majorly windy, making it even colder, but the recent weather had really stirred up the wave action. Haven’t had time to go through everything yet but… just did two for the hell of it:

Great work Alan, I love seeing your stuff.

Well seeing Alan’s great weather shots, I took my son outdoor ice skating and the weather was awful and the ice rink was next to the sea so here are a few from me I took while he skated.

Taken a few months ago, but only just got off my phone. North shore of Koh Samui looking out over the bay towards Koh Phangan.
Sadly, the shot was only taken with my Galaxy Nexus, but it managed to capture the colour of the sunset quite nicely.
