I stopped by the landfill/recycling center today, to dispose of some cardboard and whatnot, checked out the reuse shed just for the heck of it, and came upon a first edition of What is the What (the tale of a young man growing up amid the violence in Sudan), signed by the author and the subject. Granted, it’s got a lot of notes written in it from the previous owner, but still, it’s not a bad find if I do say so myself. I wonder why it was at the dump?

For some reason used books tend to be perceived as having very low value. It’s a big part of why there’s fewer used bookstores in the US than there were twenty years ago (IIRC). Nobody wants to pay more than a dollar or two even for a used hardback. The used signed first-edition hardbacks that show up occasionally at local second-hand sellers go for like five bucks.

I’ve finished Baldur’s Gate 2 for the first time in my life. I had played it when it came out, but never finished. Epic, a once in a lifetime experience. The unveiling of the story and motives at the end part is great.

Now… The Throne of Bhaal.

I went snowboarding at Tiffindell for the past couple of days.

I’d done some snow skiing about 20 years ago, so I tried snowboarding this time.
Took one 2 hour lesson and I was cruising down the main slope (unfortunately about 500m long).

Day 2 I started trying out riding switch and by the end of it I had about 3/4 of the ability I had riding ‘straight’.

Day 3 I started trying some hops off the flat (with some spins) and some small kickers. I had difficulty landing the spins but 60% of the hops from kickers I was getting right.

Saturday I was goofing around, then I was going to have a go at the jump but on my way to get a helmet, one of the other snowboarders stopped me and asked if I wanted to go up to the top of the mountain with him and another guy. Off we went!

What an amazing ride!!
It took about 45 min to hike up and about a minute or two to ride down but it was damn great!
The resort had only the bottom lift running as there wasn’t quite enough snow to open the top run, so we had to hike up from about halfway.

Next year I’m living off peanuts and raisins and saving money to go boarding overseas!

When shooting a particularly involved fight scene last night, we forgot the broom I was supposed to use as a weapon and after a basement hunt came up with a cheap bamboo tiki torch instead. I was supposed to swing it back like a hitter up to bat and the guy behind me was supposed to duck out of the way. This worked really well in rehearsals.

Instead once we were rolling, he decided that it would be funnier if I smacked him with it before I smacked the guy I was supposed to be attacking and thus when I swung backwards he stayed put and I caught him full in the face.

As a result, he’s going to have a nifty scar on his forehead. I guess it’s not a real production until some bleeds…right?

Went to a 30th birthday party and some nutter too half a bottle of vodka and filled it up with habaneros and jalapenos then let it mellow for a few weeks. This was all unbeknownst to me until I had a shot. Damn, it was good.

My wife just found out she passed her pharmacy boards, which is a relief to her because she’s not very useful at work yet without the state seal of approval and it’s causing a bit of conflict.

It’s funny because she lets herself get stressed out over things and then acts like life will be easier if she can only take care of whatever’s on her mind. I keep telling her it will get worse and she needs to work on deflecting stress, but I think I’ll just let her be happy for now!

I successfully defended today for my PhD in mathematics. Does anyone know when I can start using the title Dr.? This is a very important question, for what good is being done if I don’t get a title?
