Gross, krok! I’m always afraid some dead animal is going to fester in my walls or something. In a related note, I just discovered mouse droppings and nibbled on soap in my basement, so out some the traps. Sorry little guy, but I can’t have you transferring anything to Buddy if he ever got a hold of you. Or chewing on random wires.
In unrelated news, or kind of related to this thread, I did a tour of that penthouse apartment. It was huge and pretty cool, but I think I’m going to pass. The problem is there are so many inconveniences living that high and all alone. For instance:
-
Moving in and out would be a huge, huge pain. Plus, I can’t install a hot tub. Noooooo!
-
In order to get in and out directly, that is not switch elevators to the 44th floor, you have to call the front desk and they send the elevator up. Every single time. Forget your phone? It’s back up 44 floors and then another phone call.
-
None of the windows open that high up. Want to cook bacon? Better like that smell. For a week. There is a hood vent on both the stoves (one kitchen on each floor!) but that smell would still linger with no fresh air.
-
If anyone pulls a fire alarm or there is an actual fire, forget it. The elevators lock and go down to the ground floor. Then you have to walk down 44 floors. The guards actually suggested getting a parachute. (or maybe a Batman wings cape)

There is NO ONE else living in the building. So you have to arrange all the things that go with living somewhere, with the management company. You have to work out package delivery, and guest arrival, and moving, and all that crap. They don’t even have a washer/dryer hooked up or there, you’d have to make arrangements. The place is just not set up for having someone actually live there.
Awesome views, but I can see why it’s been so long since it rented.
Yeah, I didn’t actually expect that to work – sometimes my wife humors my geeky tendencies. I’ll post the pics in a few days when my wife returns, she’s still in NJ with the camera.
I had a long elaborate dream the other night (kind of a city under siege and it was like watching a film about it rather than being in it directly). The weird part is this was followed by another dream involving nothing more than just casually hanging out with a few friends. In this second dream I remembered the first dream and started telling my friends in the second dream about it. But they weren’t interested, so I stopped.
The sleeping mind is a strange thing.

So you should always ask your doctor to check the name on your file whenever you’re in the hospital, it turns out.
My aunt was in a hospital kind of in the middle of nowhere after her heart attack (it was the closest one) with her son in law who is an ER doc. They were arranging transport to one of the big hospitals in the city after it was confirmed she had a heart attack and they wanted to do an emergency…uh. Doctor talk stuff. Catheter thing? To see the damage/cause/whatever, I am not a doctor. Anyway, while they are awaiting transport, the head cardio guy comes in and tells her that it’s not really as bad as they first thought and he thinks she can just stay at their hospital and that a stress test will tell them everything they need to know/fix everything, I don’t really know what a stress test does, but he thinks that’s the way to go.
My aunt is a little surprised and asks if he’s sure and he says yes. So she’s like ‘Well, all right.’ At which point he speaks up and says, “Wait, which test did you read, the first one or the second one because I don’t think a stress test is the way to go here.” and the head of cardio gets annoyed and is all “No her numbers are (insert doctor talk here) which means she can stay and just have the stress test.” and he says, “Well what about (insert more doctor sounding crap I can’t even spell here)?” and the cardio guy is like “I really don’t think it’s a factor.”
At which point he says, “Can I just see that file?”
It was the wrong chart. For another patient. And once they looked at her actual chart? A stress test apparently would’ve caused a lot more damage and/or killed her. The cardio guy ran out of the room, didn’t return for two hours, and when he did never lifted his eyes from the file and mumbled that they’d have her transported immediately.
So always double check that they have the right chart, folks!

Yeah, a stress test is them stressing the heart in the hospital through medication or a treadmill.
Probably a bad idea for someone with recent heart trauma.
And yes, that is solid advice. Also… move to an electronic medical record folks. Paper kills.

Something similar happened after I had the baby, except it was not a life-or-death situation. A pediatrician came in while I was very, very drowsy and/or sleeping, the morning after I gave birth. He was about to do a physical. “Let me just see this little girl.” Me, from bed: “It’s a boy.” Silence for a few seconds while the doctor studied the file. “Oh, sorry, I have the wrong room,” he said, and left. No harm done; I was most annoyed that he woke me up.

She doesn’t sound evil. In fact she sounds downright considerate going into the next room to have her heart attack so she didn’t ruin dinner for her guests.

I had an aunt like that, and when she died and I really wasn’t that sorry to see her go, my cousins were all mad at me. I don’t get it, why am I supposed to put up with a lot of insulting, demeaning, self-esteem destroying comments and be sad because I’ll never have to hear that again?
Aren’t you guys contradicting each other now.
She’s rich and likes Glenn Beck - almost dying just means she didn’t pay for the right health insurance.
I won a $25,000 legal settlement last week. It’s a nice turnaround from my job woes that have kept me worried about money these last few months, and I was able to put a chunk into savings, a chunk into my car loan, and I’m still trying to figure out what to do with the rest.

It turns out that a redundant backup system is pointless when you leave both backup hard drives in the bag with the laptop, all of which contain the only three copies of the 25 page senior thesis and all accompanying notes that you’ve been working on for two months, if that bag is stolen from your car. The next two things on my list are to find a good online backup service and figure out how to rebuild my paper from scratch in a week and a half.

Quarter to Three party, duh.

That’s just awful.
I know, hindsight and all, but the best backups involve something stored off-site (or at least away from the potentially stolen/fire damaged/flood damaged computer).
I’m so sorry you lost all that work. I can’t imagine what you must be feeling.
This is a very good idea!
Put it into savings with the other chunk. Just to be safe, until you find a job (unless you have one, then do the other suggestion)

She sounds like the wicked step mother in an old Grimm Brothers fairy tale.
Oh, in news on my side I was given the job offer from the company that I mentioned. I now need to decide whether to take it.
