I’ve only got another week and a half or so left. I’ve got about 3 papers to write, but only one final in my introduction to German class. I’m really excited for this break, for two reasons; I won’t be at school and get to take a break from my school friends, and I’ll be working a job that actually pays money (Substitute teaching).
Our Christmas tree fell over this morning. Only lost a couple of ornaments, one sentimental but I think we can kind of replace it in a way.
The warning signs were there: wife wanted a larger tree than last year, stand was getting flimsy and not very encouraging, kept thinking the tree wasn’t straight but the wife was sure it looked fine.
Bah, humbug! Ordered one online with a more clever design than the usual shit with sheet metal legs. We’ll see how it goes.
Very cool.
I did just realize something horrible, though: between tomorrow and next Thursday I have six tests to take. Jesus. Three of them are finals, and the other three are “just” super-important. Sigh.

I’ve got one class tomorrow, and then one single, solitary final.
I’m trying not to think about the three hundred final exams that I’ll have to grade between now and then.
Ugh no kidding. I hate the super-important tests that should probably just be finals but aren’t in name only.
What I don’t get is why professors have a test the week before finals. Why not just put that material on the final instead of making the students take two tests in a seven-day period?
tiohn, I don’t envy you about the grading. That’s gotta suck.

I am not looking forward to the next two weeks. Comment on 17 9-10 page papers, return them, have 17 student conferences, grade 17 9-10 page papers and return them, grade 17 finals and return them.

Got to watch my daughter hit with pro tennis players Melanie Oudin, Sam Querry, John Isner and the Bryan brothers today at school, then she was a ball kid at their exhibition matches tonight at the UTC arena…Maybe Gordon Cameron will think it’s interesting, there aren’t too many tennis fans around here. :)

Would you rather have the extra test as a grade buffer or have that value rolled into the final? It depends on how they are weighting the tests for your overall grade, but the professors may think they are doing you a favor.
Very interesting! I only hope the Bryans didn’t do a chest bump.
Maybe they are. I’d figure out the math, except that I’ve been doing math homework all night and I’m brain-fried. (I never, ever want to see another problem where I have to subtract polynomial fractions. Algebra can be fun, but not those.)

Hahaha, they DID, and Bob accidentaly hit my daughter in the leg with his racquet as they did it, it was hilarious! He apologized, she was fine, everyone laughed. Good times. Those guys are pretty cool, they were playing doubles points (duh) against my daughters team at the school, some of the boys started trying to hit at them since nobody could pass them, the brothers ended that quickly. My daughter said one of the boys got back in line after a smash and said “Don’t hit at them, they get pissed.” heh

They’re doing the draw for the World Cup (football/soccer/The Greatest Game) at the CTICC (cape Town international Conference Center).
In Long Street, they’ve blocked off the street and, 10m from the entrance to my apartment block/place, setup a huge stage where they are going to be broadcasting the draw. They’ve also planned a lot of activities and bands for the afternoon and evening.

My daughter (12) made the All Star Soccer team we just found out last nite. She has been playing in AYSO for 6 years, because she really enjoys it…and it seems she is finally getting to the point where she is getting good.
It does mean another 8 weeks of practices twice a week and 2 games every weekend but she is so excited that she was picked, it is definitely worth it.
Hmm, I wonder how good college scholarships are for soccer…?
If she is good, then she can get a full ride to a school with a good soccer program. A kid that I graduated with went somewhere big for soccer and it was a huge deal for my little middle of nowhere high school that we had a congratulations party.
To expound on what DGS said, now you need to think about making the jump to your area club team. Making the all-stars at the ‘rec’ level is well and good but those kids who start for their eventual highschools and who get tendered offers for schollys are the ones who are currently playing club soccer, not rec. But if she’s game I’d think you should strongly consider getting her into that. Not that someone couldn’t make their HS team without club experience but SoCal is such a soccer hotbed anyways that definitely where the scouts will be looking… club -> HS. In fact, some boys and girls stay with their club in lieu of playing HS the clubs can be so competitive.
A few kids from my high school did both, including the super important guy I mentioned earlier. Also she should think of doing some sort of indoor soccer during the off seasons, just to keep on her game.

Indoor? That shit is for weaklings.

LOL, no snow here at the beach so …I guess we just go with being weak!
Club- Yup, it is a club town here too- I think after this I will see how she feels about it- I am just glad my daughter likes it and we are not like the rest of our family that has forced their daughter into Softball and I KNOW she is not as into it as her parents.
