So my fiancee’s brother just laid down demands that we have to invite his wife’s parents to our wedding. When we told him no, he threw a fit and decided he wasn’t going to come. We’ve met her parents maybe twice? Why the heck would we invite them to the wedding? Are we being unreasonable? Weddings are limited venues where you’re paying by the head, I’ve cut out a decent chunk of friends I’d like to see there.

(also in case anyone remembers, the phillipines is out, back to local venues)

I hope his antics are not just the tip of the ice-berg, this could be a sign of things to come. You mentioned earlier you may be getting married in the Philippines, is there some sort of tradition there you’re unknowingly overlooking or something?

That said, my feeling is that if the bride and groom are the ones footing the bill for the thing, they can invite or not invite whomever they want and noone should be upset about the choices.

My brother got married in the Philippines about 10 years ago, and the guest list ended up around 400 people, with no clue who about 200 were. We’re talking extended, extended family, and their families, and their friends.

I’m getting married in a couple days, and there are about 20-25 or so people out of our guest list of 125 that neither of us know, mostly close friends of my parents and their families. Several in-laws of aunts and uncles, as well.

So I’m thinking it’s partially a Filipino thing, especially with how extended the families get.

Yeah, if it had been in the Phillipines, i wouldn’t have minded, as spending 10k there is the equivalent to spending a million here. But the thing is, the wife isn’t Filipino, her parents aren’t Filipino, and in fact do not speak english or any common languages with the rest of the guests, so what exactly would they do there? The irony is that I have a feeling that they won’t even come to the wedding.

Having the parents of either side add friends of theirs to the guest list, I expected, and we already slotted that in to the number of people we’d invite along with a large block for her family-- but this just bugged me, especially the threatening not to show because he didn’t get his way. In the end, he called up his mom and whined, so she gave him two of the slots we gave her for her friends. Which is too bad, after that behaviour, i was quite happy to not have him at the wedding.

I just started watching his standup special on Netflix, I love how he goes off on tangents then just snaps back to his act as if it was just a natural progression. He’s quite a funny dude, I’d totally hang out with hime just to see what comes rolling out of his head.

I first read this and thought, “Huh, Jesus is coming to Disneyland? That’s kinda weird,” and then I realised you meant Handel’s Messiah. :p
