Seriously man, school pride is good and I’m not saying Binghamton isn’t a good school, but throwing out 30 schools as “public Ivies” is silly. Yes, a couple guys sold books based on coining the term. Yeah for them.

FYI- New College of The University of Southern Florida is a “public Ivy” too, I see.

I don’t know what that means, sorry, I don’t follow too many schools outside of my own, so your snide comment about the quality of Public Ivies is lost on me.

You can take it as snide if you want, but I really am trying to be forthright.

When terms get stretched beyond a reasonably limit, credibility is lost. 30-something schools being “public Ivies” is over that limit.

Listing Binghamton in the same sentence as Harvard, Yale, Columbia is over that limit.

It’s not an indictment of the quality of the school’s teaching, it’s a practical recognition that, based on reputation alone, we’re not talking about the same thing.

On the subject of student government, an interesting thing happened while I was attending UT-Austin. The student government realized that they had the power to add fees to each student’s tuition. Not big fees, mind you; out of, say, $750 in a semester’s tuition, you’d have maybe a $20 fee. So nothing so large that students would object to it.

Of course the brilliance of this (that the student gov’t realized) is that there are 50,000 students at UT every year.

So in a very short time, they’d raised millions of dollars, which they then spent on buying new student facilities. And so, for example, Gregory Gym, a brick-and-concrete sweathouse that wouldn’t seem out of place in the first Rocky movie in 1991, today looks like this. (Not pictured: The shallow end with the chairs in it. Oh, and there’s free wi-fi coverage all over that area.)

Absolutely insane. Makes me want to go back to school. Wasn’t one bit like that when I went there, but it’s folks in student government from my era that made that possible.

I am paying way too much for Eugene’s shitty fucking community college, their over-worked drug-addled inexperienced teachers, and their moldy ass disgusting campus. Jesus fucking Christ.

Our Student Activity Fee that is imposed by our Student Association was $86.50 for 5-6 years and just got increased in our recent referendum to $92.50, which is quite low for schools that do have a Student Activity Fee, compared to our population. We were vehemently against it, but our current SA president is a scumbag and basically told everyone on campus that if they didn’t vote to increase it, that there would be no more Activity fee and therefore all of our services that we provide (Free buses around the city and to campus for students, all of our clubs are funded through the SA, as well as all sorts of programs that go on throughout the campus) would have to be cut due to a lack of budget (Which isn’t true because at any one point in time we have over $1.5 million sitting in an account to make up in case we don’t have a budget), despite the fact that if it didn’t pass to be increased we would still get the activity fee, just at the current rate that it has been.

Student politics are so shady.

Virginia is public. The other schools are private, right? If so, they have to have higher tuitions because that’s a larger portion of their income. It isn’t a reflection of quality per se, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that Virginia is making better use of their funds, because we don’t know the relative overall endowments and funding of the schools. Tuition fees alone can’t tell us that information. You may already know all that, so this is more for the benefit of anyone who doesn’t.

And that’s also, as you said, probably in-state tuition, so for out-of-staters it’s probably a lot more expensive.

Tuition in Binghamton is only around $8000-ish for in state. That’s not with Room and Board, or any of the other fee, which brings it up to 20,000-ish.

Today I learned that telling my wife that the bosses daughter was the “beautiful one with the long black hair” is a mistake.

Ouch. I’m assuming your wife in of the insecure/jealous variety and you aren’t ever allowed to even hint at the possibility that any other female might be remotely attractive?

I’d hope not. That would suck. People are attractive, it happens.

That’s an odd thing, yes. But I assume you knew she had these insecurities before you married her. Too bad, though. My wife and I tell each other about attractive people all the time. It’s nice not to have to hide such things.

Normally not so I’m not 100% sure quite what happened there.

I’ve learned to give my wife a pass when she acts unpredictably about 0.0357142857142857% of the time.

My publisher no longer wants game reviews, because she wants to draw an adult audience.

This is the same on who tried to put Heavy Rain in the Kids section.

Google just killed my Adsense account too. I’m appealing now, though I’m probably going to go to another service. Best case, I get my $175 and I’m done. Worst case I get nothing AND I’m out the $50 I’ve spent in advertisement which got me that traffic to earn the $175.

So I’m going to be making around 50 bucks a month, now, it looks like.

Fun.

I found out that if you try to go through Ikea backwards, you will NEVER find what you are looking for. Just go in the front door and follow the arrows.

Heh. I’m just surprised that I’m not the only Binghamton grad on this board.

i freaking know. is sweden really invaded so frequently their retail stores are designed for urban defense?

So you are the guy that always annoys everyone? Get with ze program, schnell!

I’m just as surprised.
