I had a Double Cream Blueberry pie from Marie Callender’s yesterday (ok well a big piece, not the whole pie) and I think it was the best pie I have ever had in my life. To all those people here with good news, go buy one in celebration.
Off to see if there is one more piece in the fridge.
Pie isn’t as awesome as new employment or housing or marriage or whatever. But it’s close.

The offer letter was rescinded. I am back on the hunt.
The official line is that I didn’t respond to the offer letter in 48 hours, which is total bullshit. They didn’t even give me a full 48 hours. I had planned on going down there today to sign the letter, because my printer is in a storage unit.
The real reason has to do with how I found out about the position. I was forwarded the position from a friend, who used to work for the company. She did not leave the company on good terms (in fact, she was fired). We had purposely unlinked from any and all social networking so that they couldn’t find out that she and I know one another.
The HR person called me twice yesterday, but both times I was in the middle of packing and moving all of my stuff. My hands were literally full both times, and my cell was really low on minutes. It re-upped today, so I planned on calling first thing in the morning.
The person who would have been my boss called me as I was driving a UHaul across the Bay Bridge during rush hour traffic. My reception was very poor, and I couldn’t understand anything he said. I let him know this, and said that I would return his call this morning. Apparently, he thought I was very rude to him on the phone, and he googled me.
The one thing that I couldn’t control was that my friend and I were on the SFYR board together. Our names are linked if you google my actual legal name. I purposely use my maiden name or a handle on social networking sites to have some semblance of internet privacy.
I’m devastated. I really wanted this job. I would have rocked it.
Holy shit, Siren, that is tremendously shitty. I’ve been screwed out of a few jobs, I’d best most of the board has, and yet that one REALLY stands out.
Does QT3 have a cheesecake fund? I’m starting to think we should, you could probably use one.
That’s why you make sure that if you’re going to do something outlandish, make sure you have a memorable and totally unique alias. I recommend “Guapo Dungsrimbo”.

Ugh. That’s terrible, Siren. Sorry to hear that.

Thanks for the support everyone.
Unless I’m working on a campaign, this is the LAST time I’m doing anything political. I specifically requested to NOT be on the website for this very reason. Being someone who identifies as a conservative in San Francisco is bad enough, I don’t need it advertised.
Sounds a bit weird to interview somebody, like them enough to hire them and first then Google them, because you felt they were rude.
Perhaps not somebody, who’d be a nice (or sane) boss.
That’s no help now, so I hope something better turns up.

Really sorry to hear it Siren.
Siren, sorry about the situation. That really stinks. How do you know that the google turned up that link between you two? Also, why would an association with your friend be a major flag. That she was fired isn’t necessarily telling them anything about you.

Sorry, no I wasn’t trying any weird shenanigans. It’s been an unfeasibly good week so far so we’ve had a couple of drinks and it was an honest typo.
I’m still a little drop jawed reading it again and it is why I do my utmost not to be traceable, in my personal life, under my real name on the internet.

Well, silver lining, would you really want to work for people who are that opinionated and so willing to turn on you?
This. That they Googled you after they gave you an offer seems an unlikely cause for what happened.
From everything else you said, it sounds like your potential boss got himself upset because he felt you weren’t responsive enough. HR’s effort to reach you plus his effort to reach you didn’t pan out in the time frame they wanted. Sadly, sometimes it can come down to something like this, particularly if it is a job that requires responsiveness.
Sorry to hear about that, Siren. I was really, genuinely happy to hear of the offer, and now I’m really, genuinely sad to hear it was rescinded. This is one emotional roller-coaster of a thread right now. Damn it.
And if I sound flippant, I don’t mean to. My team kicked ass in the pub quiz tonight, and I’m still feeling the free beer a bit.
The (counter) offer on the home got accepted, and now I’m freaking out. My first house. Shit!

Sorry to hear about your luck Siren. I suspect that is has more to do with lack of responsiveness than googling you on the internet. I know if I had a new hire that I was having trouble getting a hold of I would suspect that they either had difficulty being responsive or weren’t that interested in the job. But responsiveness is critical in my job so I may be biased.
The fact that you had good reasons for being hard to contact isn’t relevant since its more about perception than reality. Sicne it is a perception thing its inherently unfair, and sucks that you lost an opportunity because of it. I have my fingers crossed that you’ll find something even better.

I’m going on holidays tomorrow and my car just broke down in the middle of a drive-thru. Now I wait for a ride. Whee!
God my roommate is an awful singer… wow… Completely tone deaf. I can’t wait to listen to his mp3s… -_-
