I’ve found that working in the yard has increased my emotional connection to the house, Dean, FWIW. I feel a better sense of ownership and that it’s really “mine”.

I used to just grill and cut the grass but the difference in investment that I feel now is definitely worth it for me.

How the fuck do you grill the grass?

The more pressing problem is how to avoid all the smoke. On windy days, it’s suffocating.

Slash and burn. I do not think it means what you think it means.

My lawn in mown.

I love the inside of my house, and it seems that a lot of home ownership is making sure the outside doesn’t get inside. I’m constantly fighting against ants, hornets, mice, spiders, moths, and flies. They do not belong in or around our house, so I must kill them.

My wife fights a never-ending battle against the vines that seem to have permeated the lawn and garden and want to use whatever she plants as something to grow on.

I don’t know about connection-- I have a certain pride now that my lawn looks good again, but that’ll only last for a day or three.

OK, this is going to get weird but … by connection I mean the way I felt about my parents house when I was growing up. It was very much a home base for me and I felt like I intimately knew it. I knew what everything looked and smelled like, I knew what every corner felt like, I knew where every squeak in the floor was. In my adult life, I haven’t had that. I’ve lived in a few places but I never felt that same connection to them. I attributed that to simply growing up but I’m beginning to rediscover it through working inside and outside of my house. I feel a better bond forming because of it.

I feel more comfortable in the space because I have some sweat equity in it.

It sounds like I’m high but I’m really not! :) It’s something I wasn’t expecting but I’m happy that it’s occurring.

No, that’s not weird. I get what you are saying. We recently had our kitchen floor redone (I didn’t do it myself, but even seeing the process strips your house down a bit for you) and with each new project of that sort, I feel a bit closer to this place.

I went with a bachelorette party to P-Town and saw my first drag show this weekend. There were a lot of disappointed lesbians at the bar we ended up at when they learned it was a party of straight girls. Did not stop asses from getting grabbed all night though.

Excellently fun time.

All I can say is I’ve had people in Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles and Sydney all tell me Salt Lake has the most beautiful women in the world. Wholesomeness maybe?

I heard a screech of brakes and angry shouting in the alleyway outside of my house. By the time I stuck my head out the door, two guys were in my front yard looking at the woman behind the wheel of a sedan. The car was pointed at the two men. I asked what was going on. “She’s crazy! She’s trying to kill us!” said the man in the white polo. The woman behind the wheel backed up. She lowered the cell phone she was holding and said she was talking to 911 and what was my address? I told her a couple of times, but she kept repeating the wrong numbers into the phone. Then she yelled to me that these men had thrown bricks and bottles at her car. I looked, and for a nicer, newer car it had a lot of damage on the fenders and…oh, hey, her rear passenger-side window was knocked out! My girlfriend was also calling 911 by this point. I asked the men if they had done this, and one guy kind of sidled towards the alley again. She hit the accelerator and he ran back on my lawn. She braked again, fortunately (especially since my car was parked right there on the street), and one of them threw a rock at her car. At this point I lamely asked everybody to calm down. The two guys told her to go away.

“I’m not leaving until the police get here or I RUN YOU OVER!”

She put her car in park, one guy crouched down, the other guy crossed the street and stood still. And right about then the police showed up. First a city police squad car, then a Metro Transit SUV. Then an ambulance (the driver had apparently clipped one of the guys in the alley). Then a state trooper (this started on the interstate near my house). My roommate ran up, pointing at the guy in the white shirt. “I want that guy booked!” she said. “I asked them what they were doing in my yard, and he said he’d pop me if I didn’t get the fuck away!”

Much questioning commenced, and I still don’t know exactly what happened. I think it was like this: a car clipped the woman’s car on the interstate next to my house. They both stopped, angry words were exchanged, the other car drove off, hitting her car again. She followed them up the off-ramp. The driver let the two men out of the car, they started throwing rocks at her car. She drove around the block, seeing them walk down the alley next to my house, attempted to run them down. Then they were in my yard, my roommate was just pulling up and asked them what was going on. One threatened her using very harsh language, the other woman said “They’re crazy! Get away from here!” She got in her car and drove off, calling 911 and waiting down the street until she saw cops arrive. At this point I came out and saw what I saw.

So both guys were arrested for assault, at least one guy also went to jail for making terroristic threats against my roommate. I don’t know if the woman, who admitted/bragged to officers that she was trying to run over those guys, will be charged with anything…it’s kind of one of those “is it legal to shoot a robber after he runs from your house” deals. She wasn’t handcuffed anyway, and with help managed to jump start her car and leave. I have no idea what happened to the driver of the other car (the one who clipped the woman’s car and dropped off the other guys), he wasn’t around at all. Oh, and one of the cops said that these guys were gang members, definite scumbags. My roommate is afraid of some kind of gang retaliation against her, or our house, though I don’t think this is very likely. Personally I was more bemused at the time than scared, and now am thinking that maybe I shouldn’t have gone out to my front steps at all.

(For the record, it’s not “my” house, my landlord and his wife own and live in the house and another guy and I rent rooms there. But you know what I mean.)

Shit, mine isn’t as interesting as all that but I have discovered that the squirrel army is apparently combing the outside of my house for breach points. 3 of my windows had corners chewed through the screens for some squirrel access points, and yesterday three times a squirrel dove at my window from a nearby tree and latched onto the outer glass part which was open a bit, and then made angry noises as he tried to breach my screen. I yelled at one of them and it was so scared it let go and fell down two stories to the grass in the back yard. I don’t know what I did to piss these things off, it’s not like they’re after food either. When they did have access all they did was make a mess then escape before we woke up, they didn’t get to any of the food.

I have applied to do a Masters in Information Systems for Business Performance. Link here for the nosey, and any techy/academic people who could give me an idea of what I’ll actually be studying if I get in. I saw computers and the 12 August application date and jumped.

Have fun at Cark!
If it was more than a year, I’d recommend a semester abroad. Alas…

I’ve lived in Cark all my life. I’d have gone to Dublin for the masters or even a job if I could afford it but I can’t. I got me degree in UCC as well.

I’m pretty pleased with the Masters though. Hopefully I get it, but I have a glowing reference from a lecturer in UCC, who said she’d be “absolutely delighted” to give me the reference. And hopefully I get into the IT industry eventually, CRM would be my ideal position.

Ah, I’ll skip the anecdotes of what the UCC exchange students have been up to over here the last two semesters then :D

I got quoted in a newspaper article about Facebook! Yay.

I’d imagine the phrase “fuck all” and the word “beer” would come into it. I did a project with someone who spent a year somewhere in America and she expounded greatly on the social aspects of the year away.

So background screening companies suck! My background screening process has been a freakin’ circus. I fill out their online form which requested the last seven years of employers and residences along with my education. I don’t hear anything for a week then I get a horribly formatted form email from them saying they need additional information. Turns out they can’t verify anything at all. They requested Records of employment or W2s/T4s for every job I listed and even requested diplomas and transcripts.

Now, maybe I’ve got this wrong but aren’t background checks supposed to confirm what I claim by contacting others to find out this information? I mean I could forge up a few documents and they’d never know. So yesterday I gathered up what I could find and called to make sure it was adequate. Found an old record of employment I have my T4 from last year and I found a “Notice to Employee as to Change in Relationship” (basically a document stating I was getting laid off) which had my hire date and separation date on it. Currently I can’t verify my 2010 employment because I haven’t gotten a T4 yet nor a Record of Employment because I’m still receiving severance. I called and inquired if this would be enough, I was told it would be. Just to be safe I even sent along my latest pay stub.

Today I get the same form email asking about my 2010 employment and about the employer for which I only had the Notice for. I replied saying I sent in my latest pay stub for my 2010 employment and stated that I sent the Notice for the other employer and I was told it would be adequate, if not I don’t have all the W2s they’re requesting and I suggested they contact these employers and gave them their full contact information again. Then this evening I received the identical email I got this morning, no new information in it all. What the hell is the point of this, type out a god damn email telling me exactly what the issue is. They’re not that busy, I’ve called three times and I’ve never had to wait on hold.

What really gets me is this company is being paid and they aren’t doing a damn thing. I gave them the addresses and phone numbers for every one of those companies and institutions and they can’t even make a phone call to confirm it? The worst part is they can easily report that they couldn’t confirm things and I’m the one that would be out of a job, they have literally zero incentive to actually do any checking. This is ridiculous and I plan on discussing it with my prospective employer about it.

You’re Meray I presume?

The recession decimated background screening firms. I’m willing to bet the firm you’re dealing with laid off the majority of its staff and your screening is being handled by someone making a McDonald’s wage.
