I think Fender only does it with the custom shop stuff. Alder and basswood have similar tones to swamp ash and are less expensive, so they’re a lot more popular. It’s mostly the boutique companies that offer it as a relatively common option (but they’re also the companies that offer korina and bubinga as well…)

Gibson actually does offer swamp ash, which is ironic since that wood is more identified with Fender (whereas Gibson was always about mahogany).

If I had to guess I’d say that swamp ash is behind alder, basswood, and mahogany in terms of popularity. More popular than the boutique crazy shit like koa and korina, but not as popular as the other stuff.

Speaking of guitar materials, am I the only one here who owned one of those bizarre Gibson Sonex 180s back in the 80s? It was made of “Resonwood,” which I think was probably plywood dipped in clearcoat. It weighed a TON so probably wasn’t the ideal High School Girl’s First Electric Guitar. Thanks, mom and dad! But for some reason those things became sort of a collector’s item, and I got a really good price for mine on Ebay about five years ago.

going to start living part-time in Charlotte (maybe 20% of the time), just finished paperwork to rent a condo in South Park
got engaged a month or so ago
buying a used Mazda 5 Compact Wagon through Enterprise Car Sales so I have a vehicle in Charlotte
ordered a new ThinkPad 400
getting another stripe on blue belt in jiu-jitsu on Monday
starting to work V4s in indoor rock climbing. There was a time I never thought I’d be able to do V3s.
