Grats!!! Nice that you get to start so soon too.
Congrats!
How long were you looking for work?

Nearly three months now, Ned. It’s been one heck of an emotional rollercoaster. This job doesn’t pay much, but it’s something, and the job is interesting. I’m awaiting a call from another job that would be part-time and would provide some extra cash.

Awesome! It’s cool to hear it worked out for you.
Congrats again, Siren. I have been looking for work (other than some freelance odd jobs I’ve picked up) for…somewhat longer. :) I know how tough it can be mentally to go through.
My favorite joke was the STD/Craigslist one. Good set, awesome for a first time. Your name is great too, don’t change it.
Psh. What an obvious cry for attention.
(kidding! Way to go!)
Congrats, Siren! It puts a smile on my face whenever I hear of someone who’s able to land a job in this economy.
In a few days, I’ll have been job searching for 3 years. When I graduated with my BSEE in '87 and was laid off with 19 years of experience and several industry awards in 2007, I never would have thought I’d be unemployed for 3 years. To say it’s taken a mental toll on me and my loved ones is a huge understatement.

Great news! Hope it works out for you this time.
Three years? Ouch. Aren’t we supposed to be in an economy that values electrical engineers and other technically-skilled people?
My neighbor got her BSEE a few years back and found a job right out of school working for a major defense contractor out west. Cleared $60K her first year. So there’s definitely some stuff out there, at least in Colorado.
Also, congratulations on weathering the storm, Siren! Nice to hear some good news around here.

Rub it in Omni, rub it in.
That wasn’t my intention. :P
Yeah, it’s uncanny. Just because I have a BSEE doesn’t mean I’m a candidate for every EE opening. Like those in the medical field, engineers tend to be specialized. Industry experience and skill set determines whether or not I’m a fit for a EE position. The majority of my experience is in the semiconductor sector working on capital equipment (equipment sold to customers like Intel, AMD, TI, etc. for their fabs), but the defense sector, for example, is looking for recent experience in the defense sector. It doesn’t help that I haven’t held a EE position in nearly 3 years. The fact that the government’s considering adding a 20-week Tier 5 to unemployment benefits should make it clear just how bad the US economy is and has been since the recession started.
From what I’ve read about EE it’s a very bizarre hiring world. Unless you’re working for high end chip mfgs(AMD, Intel, Xilinx, Nvidia, etc) there’s not really much of a job market out there due to outsourcing.
I briefly toyed with the idea of going back and getting an EE degree since I found it so fascinating but in the end it was a lot more viable for me to stick to embedded software development.
Siren,
Awesome news. I hope the extra part-time thing works out as well, and that you’re able to parley one of them into a satisfying full-time opportunity.
Are you still crashing on friend’s couches? If so hopefully the current friend can keep you awhile longer until you’ve saved up enough and are confident enough in your new employment to find your own place again. I hear DoomMonkey is looking for roommates as well!
EDIT : Wait a sec, this new job wouldn’t have anything to do with holding a whiteboard, would it? ;-)
Siren does kinda look like whiteboard girl. But she lives in SF…
Yay Siren!
And Mysterio, hang in there! I’ve been employed for long periods too (though never more than a year) and it’s really hard on morale. I was lucky to have good friends I could lean on. My best advice, morale-wise, is to find someone like-minded (i.e. unemployed) to share your frustrations with.

The job that I announced is “part-time” at 40 hours per week for the first month, then a re-evaluation, and the boss expects it to turn into a full time permanent position at that time.
I’m still crashing on friend’s couches, yes. The current friend can’t keep me after Sunday, so I’m asking around again. And DoomMonkey’s place isn’t close enough to BART for me. I’m looking at places in the Richmond at the moment.
And no, it has nothing to do with whiteboards. :) I don’t see any sort of resemblance between her and I, but thank you for the comparisions.
A big thank you to those of you who have been so supportive too. It’s been appreciated.
