So “part-time” only in terms of no benefits until they determine you’re the right girl for the job and decide to hire you on all proper like. That’s fine, I’m confident that they’ll quickly see they’ve made the right decision and offer you the job for real. Congrats, and good luck.

I wish I knew anyone in San Fran that could help with your housing situation. I know what you’re going through and sympathize. When I was in college I worked with a really nice guy who lost his apartment while going to school full time and working as many shifts at the bar (where we worked together) as he could. He was from out of town, so had no family to fall back on (and still be able to go to school) so he crashed on friend’s couches for months while trying to graduate and get on his feet. I put him up for several weeks until my own landlord threatend to toss me out for breaking my lease agreement (I guess they thought I was sub-leasing to the guy or something, I wasn’t charging him to stay with me though). Anyway, I hope you can figure out something temporary until your new employment allows you a more permanant solution. You deserve a run of good fortune soon!

Yaaaaayy! Congratulations! That’s fantastic news.

Holy crap! It does! I don’t know what use I have for that but still, awesome.

Center-clicking Home works too.

mouse-wheel/center click on any link will open it in a new tab. You can also tell firefox not to switch the focus to the new tab. /thread derail

and congrats to Siren

Yes, everybody knows that. It’s just surprising that center-clicking would also work on some of Firefox’s own UI buttons.

Congratulations! A good job? I have no idea what you do for a living, but glad you’re gainfully employed again!

40 hours a week is part time?
… to me it would be overtime.

But congrats, it’s something you were really excited about doing, so I hope it becomes permanent with benefits and all.

In some contexts here in the US jobs are referred to as being “part time” (regardless of how part of full time they actually are) in the sense that you are paid hourly (not salary) and/or there are no benefits (health insurance, etc) involved as part of your employment.

Part Time doesn’t mean you work less than normal hours. It just means you get none of the good stuff that comes with a “real” job, like CCZ said.

Thank you, krise. Fortunately, I have an incredible support system (except for Matt Bowyer; that dude really dislikes me) and I’m doing my best to remain positive (which ain’t easy, let me tell you!).

Mysterio

I have no idea about your field, but you looking around the country? Is moving an option? I know I had to move to find a job. I was in FL and all looked bleak on the job front. I moved to WA and it was MUCH brighter.

Lies!

I KEEL YOU DRAKE

In all seriousness, best of luck – I can’t imagine how hard this must be, to go this long without finding something.

And you’re no longer living in Florida!

Actually, I’m still a resident of Phoenix, AZ, but have been spending most of my time with my girlfriend, who lives here in Tampa, FL. If we weren’t in a relationship (3 years now), I’d be open to looking anywhere in the US and, quite frankly, I’m sure I would have been re-employed long ago. She has a great career here, and she’s willing to move to only a select few states. So I’ve been concentrating my search in those states. Our relationship limits my options, but, if given the choice, I would choose it over a long distance relationship with her. But it’s hard to keep everything in perspective.

Thanks. If I were employed, you would have rolled me easily in Septrain.

It would probably be A LOT easier getting a job in one of your GF-approved if you were employed while looking. Fair or not, it’s how the world works. Out-of-state, unemployed is going to seriously impact your desireability to potential employers.

You might want to consider taking your lumps and finding a job wherever you can, as a means to eventually lead to a approved state. Long distance doesn’t have to mean long distance forever.

Tonight I went out on my usual 10K run. I jog at China Creek Park, which is about a dozen blocks from my place. There’s a nice 550m path that loops around the field there that’s popular with joggers. I notice there is a larger than usual contingent of dogs in the park this evening. It looks like some sort of training thing. I am always wary of dogs when I jog, not out of fear of getting attacked, but rather when dogs are running about and playing they don’t always look where they’re going, kind of like little kids.

At just under the 5K mark I am coming into the southwest corner of the path. There are a pair of dogs playing with each other off to the side. I note this but they disappear from my view, normally a good sign. Instead a few moments later I catch a flash of fur under my feet. At the same time I get that unique sensation of gravity as I go tumbling forward. I land on my hands and left knee. Because it’s a trail made of packed dirt and mulch, I’m not hurt apart from the knee being a bit scuffed. I flash a dirty look to one of the dog owners, who simply stands there looking at me. I don’t know if he’s afraid to admit responsibility or what. The dogs are already off somewhere else, continuing to innocently play.

Instead of pressing the matter, I simply get up and start running again. I don’t even stop to brush myself off – that could affect my time! (<-- insane runner mentality)

I finish the 10K with my best pace since April. Wanting to strangle that dog owner really put some extra zip into my stride. The dark side is powerful!

I sweated away some of the dirt before this picture was taken:

Tales from Recession-era America, 2010: employment edition

The good:

My partner has been searching for her first middle/high school teaching job (since graduating) for over a year now. A couple days ago she finally landed a 7th grade math job at a school that isn’t too far away so we don’t have to move.

The bad:

I found out that both my parents are now unemployed. My mom was a teacher’s aid whose job was funded by Title 1. When the government cut these, she lost her job for the coming year.

My dad worked at a regional phone company that merged with a national company about 2 years ago. Now that the merger is complete, they let him go.

Excellent news! Congrats to her!
