I thought the dotcom train had left my station after 2000, and that I’d never get to experience the anticipation and excitement all my buddies were part of back in our 20s. That I finally got to be part of one of these things is the happiest part of this for me.
Can someone just give Scrax the title of Qt3 Stalker already? He found where Kong works, he’s got a dating web service site up for Bill, who knows where he’s going to strike next.
Initial Public Offering. Means a company that was privately owned converted to being publicly owned and the shares of the company were put out on the stock market for investors to buy for the first time.
And usually means everyone makes some good money, right?
It means the people who owned pieces of the company before the sale tend to do rather well yes. Typically this is the owners of the company plus sometimes employees who were granted shares of ownership as part of incentive or compensation packages.
In the dotcom days when stocks would shoot up to ridiculous prices right after IPO it often meant that a low level employee of one of these companies could find themselves unexpected getting quite the nice cash influx. High level employees could find themselves suddenly millionaires.
I went rock climbing for the weekend, my first time rock climbing in ages. I didn’t have my own equipment so here I was scurrying up the easy routes in my massive massive steel toed work boots which was just freaking ridiculous. I couldn’t feel the rock, I could barely move my feet, and I had to position my feet sideways to get enough grip but god dam if I didn’t actually do it. I earned myself 6 beers in bets for doing that one :p

Picked up 2 new kittens today. A boy and a girl from the same litter. Our existing cat was acting quite lonely after my other cat died 3 weeks ago, and seems to be doing fairly well with the new guys (after some initial hissing).

I saw that IPO mentioned on a stock blog that I follow and then saw the IPO announcement here and wondered if it was a match. Apparently, it is!
Went to the Adult Swim “upfront” party here in NYC last night. What’s an upfront? It’s a party/event where TV networks shamelessly sell themselves to advertisers.
Was a great party, they had AS themed carnival booths set up all over you could go to to get some schwag (hats, DVDs, etc). One of these was the “Xavier’s Tree of Infinite Possibilities and Sadness”, which was pretty much exactly like that tree stump from the 80’s Flash Gordon movie. Except you got a beer cozy instead of pain.
Bizarrely enough, T Pain performed. It made more sense once I realized he has a show coming out on Adult Swim, but still, weird to see him doing his full stage thing is such a small venue. While T Pain, king of the Autotune was on stage, I noticed that the Autotune the News guys were milling about in the crowd.
I also learned that one of the guys at AS sent my latest ridiculous web game to his cousin, Will Wright, who apparently actually played it and said some kind words. I tried for a pull quote (“Will Wright says ‘this game is ok’!”), but no dice.
